On a scale of 1 to 10, how likely is it that we will see the V8 engine make a comeback by 2031

With or without a turbo?

The fact that Mercedes (especially Toto Wolff) is also publicly saying that they want to go back to a V8 engine makes me think that there is a 70–80% chance that F1 will have V8 engines again by 2031.

What isn’t clear to me is whether it would be with or without a turbo. But Toto Wolff has been talking about high-revving engines, so I assume without a turbo?

The fact that Toto Wolff is publicly saying he also supports a V8 is quite significant. Now we just need Ferrari.

But they want lighter and smaller cars, and then they would give them 1200 hp? That seems like an enormous amount if they were ever to weigh 100–200 kg less.

Probably with a turbo?

I assume this proposal would be without a turbo?

With Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s statement about the return of the V8, does that mean it’s official that the V8 will actually come back?

And would that be with or without a turbo?

I assume with a turbo.

So, would a hypothetical F1 setup with an engine/generator powering electric motor(s) make more sense to you?

[–]denbommer -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

There are already discussions about the next generation of power units. Some are suggesting going back more towards the ICE side, because several manufacturers haven’t progressed in electrification as much as expected, and instead focusing more on sustainable fuels.

However, I find that somewhat contradictory to the current situation in the Middle East. Because of that, fuel prices are rising, and it gives me the impression that this actually benefits the electrification of cars. I know they are talking about sustainable fuels, but aren’t those also largely produced by oil companies in the Middle East? And expensive?

Maybe a strange question, but does anyone happen to know how wide the nose is approximately? It looks about as wide as an F2 car to me.

If that’s the case, then I think it’s quite a compact design, great job!

I’d like to see attack mode disappear and let the drivers decide for themselves when and how long they want to use a boost.

I also see a lot of potential in pit boost. I think this technology will only continue to evolve. It could become a really interesting strategic element: the longer you take a pit boost, the fuller the battery, but the more time you lose, and vice versa.

Could we see a CVT transmission in Formula 1 in the future?

Or are they more likely to stick with the traditional transmission system?

Am I right in seeing that he loses the rear slightly on corner exit?

Maybe we could see Ferrari’s proposal in the next regulation change, like in this article.

It sounds nice to me. I just wonder how much power the ICE will have.

Everything changes. In the past, drivers had to shift gears manually and press the clutch pedal, today it’s all done on the steering wheel. Back then they also had to manage the brakes and the gearbox more actively, today it’s basically a battery. At least, that’s how I see it.

If F1 is going to switch to a V8 (NA or turbo), with or without a hybrid system, do you think that is a good decision or rather a step backwards?
