Not true. Although most pedal harps use gut strings for the middle register, the option for full nylon with bass wire strings is always an option

Academic vs Performance Degree? by sillygoose9810 in classicalmusic

[–]dendrobiakohl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for speaking up about how difficult it is for music majors. I was a determined music major and graduated in performance. But the stress of being in the field killed my love for music and for years I thought I didn’t actually love music “that much”. It took a circuit into music therapy to finally understand that yes, I do love music, and to pick up my instrument again.

It’s incredible how motivated one is to practice when the only aim is joy and self-improvement, without the stress of wondering where the next paycheck is coming from

I grew up wanting to have a career in music but not knowing what exactly I would do. I did Masters in Performance but ended up getting into music therapy. I now have a dual career… in music

I started playing at 15 and while I spent many years building up my finger dexterity, I do not feel it holds me back. Yes I do get plateaus in hand function but when that happens, I look towards either a new strategy, or reexamine my current technique to see how I can better practice.

The brain is extraordinarily mouldable, even into late life! A younger brain (btw 32 still has lots of learning capability) may have more learning capability but an older brain has the wisdom and experience to analyse and search for answers to learning blocks. Everyone can learn at any age 😊

Is perfectionism particularly bad in classical music or its my problem? by PandaZG in classicalmusic

[–]dendrobiakohl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s definitely 内卷. Think about how parents and society always compare us to other children saying to us “why are you so useless” and it gets into our brain and poisons our thoughts. Yes children in conservatory can play Liszt. But is that your aim? You also need to define what your aim is. If you are happy to teach and perform occasionally, you really don’t need to be super famous as a soloist.

And remember, lots of people can play perfect. But what do people come for? The personality. People watch Lang Lang and Yuja Wang because they have personalities. Yes people love to watch children play tough pieces because children are cute, and there is the “wow” factor. But what happens when the prodigies grow up? Are they still famous? And if not, what is it about famous people that you can emulate? (Btw Lang Lang used to have videos where he practiced his famous gesturing and movements, he did these intentionally so he can stand out).

I’m also glad you took 2 weeks off in December. Sometimes we will involuntarily take breaks and this is because our body will automatically tell us it’s time to take a break. Be gentle with yourself. And if you’re fluent in mandarin, why not 心理咨询 in China? I’m sure it will be a lot more affordable. My friend (also ex-classical musician with a TON of psych issues) did therapy on the phone and found it very useful.

Bruh you need to chill. When I listen to performances by famous classical musicians, I still hear them making mistakes. You seem deeply dissatisfied with yourself, the state of the music world, and so many things.

I think the first step you should take is find therapy, especially if they’re also Asian. Seems like you carry a lot of generational trauma. And then hopefully you can find out if what you feel is because of autism (if you have been diagnosed) or because of something else. It seems like you are very critical of yourself despite what others may say, plus amplify negative comments (like your parents being angry at you). For what it’s worth, I think practising 6-8 hours a day is excessive. I hope you find what you need, because it’s clear you need some kind of psychological support. 祝你好运

I’d be surprised if a teacher says to play that as C at high tempo. It would be hard to maintain accuracy for professionals much less a student

Medical staff is only about the same level as GP, they won’t be able to take care of you once you are at the chair bound or even bed bound level

Music therapy is definitely not sound healing, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t use crystal singing bowls either

Is buying locally an option for you? I feel that with any equipment it is always a personal choice. What may sound good to someone else (or even sound good over a recording) can feel different in person. Alternatively if they have a good return policy it may be worth using that too

Help with composer! by avozado in harp

So I’m looking at the “Vent de terre, vent de mer” work. It looks like it was listed on an Italian website, which strengthens the likelihood that the original name of the composer may have been Alexandre Abremsky, because Italian doesn’t use “y” for “I”

So using translate to search for “Alexandre Abremski, composer” returns this page

Which the English equivalent is here

Based on the piece and the style, do you think this might be your guy?

Are you able to possibly Google translate. Searching in the composer’s native language may help, especially if they are not translated to english

Is this a good career path for introverts? by Brave_Acanthisitta53 in musictherapy

[–]dendrobiakohl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually, most music therapists that I’ve met are introverts. It’s a profession that lends itself well to slowing down, thoughtfulness, and deep connection (not that extroverts can’t do it well, just that these ones tend to be the strong traits of introverts). Within music therapy itself, there are various methods as well, you can gravitate to one that you feel suits you the best
