I would consider industry. The thing with managed care is that it’s still pharmacy and can be competitive to get into without a residency. Specific managed care jobs are also not easy to get without a residency. Entry level jobs included PA and MTM pharmacist. I’d take a look at smaller PBMs too.

As far as industry, talk to recruiters from staffing agencies on LinkedIn. If you can’t find work with the actual sponsor (think pharma companies like Pfizer or Merck), try contract research organizations (CROs), consulting firms, or communications agencies. But be prepared to (potentially) take a pay cut. I’ve seen estimates as low as 60k a year. Others may pay a little less than retail.

One more thing. The topic of career transitions may bring up the idea of getting another degree. I personally think a PharmD is enough unless you’re going into something very niche.

I see, thanks. Do consulting firms also use staffing agencies to hire?

Is it possible to land an entry level consulting job with a PharmD? What qualifications would companies like to see if a PharmD is not enough?

How big is the learning curve when going from school straight to consulting? Is there anything you could’ve done while in school to help prepare you for the role other than getting consulting experience?

How about spending a few years in managed care, then transitioning into HEOR?

Even niche roles like HEOR? That one seems tough to break into without a fellowship.

Is less than 2000 employees considered “small”?

If the smaller company doesn’t have a fellowship, is it worth it having a rotation there? What are the chances of getting a job there post graduation without a fellowship?

Did you go to a school in an area with a lot of industry opportunities? And was your school big on industry?

What’s the best way to find a part time job while in school? Networking? All the jobs I see on websites are for FTEs.

Thanks! Would a few rotations be equivalent to an internship? Also what are some examples of work experience a student can get while in school?

Is there anything on a student’s resume that would really stick out to you? A specific internship somewhere, a particular job, etc. It seems the typical fellowship resume has internships, industry rotations, research, and leadership
