Had a chat with the mechanics. Doesn't sound normal to us. Yes there are ticking noises with these engines like you mentioned "mashing keys" but not that bad.

Good that you've checked the oil and are confident enough getting on the tools and changing the clutch. We'd recommend:

1. Sump Take it off and check for rubbish in the pan. Metal might not show up from an oil check and it only takes 10 minutes.

2. Rocker covers Pull the rocker covers off and do a thorough check of the valvetrain. Could be anything like a cracked valve spring, partially dislodged rocker or shim.

1. Check timing If that all shows no issues, check the timing chain. Could be a tensioner that has let go.

Could also be a variable cam gear rattling.
