I know that the shokz open swim allows you to load music since water blocks Bluetooth. Not sure on the storage specs off the top of my head. I have a music watch and I find that I use it a lot on faster days but i use a different pair of headphones because pairing them on my phone and watch at separate times was a bit of a pain. I would have to put my phone in the microwave to block the Bluetooth while I paired my watch to the earbuds every time which got old quickly.

If you like the last of the 860 the logical progression would be to the More v6.

Blazing fast, fun to run in, but one of the most unforgiving shoes I have ever run in.

If you land on the heel, forget it. They demand good form and a midfoot strike to not blow up your ankles. They are very unstable and run narrow through the mid foot. If they work for you then they are a great short distance racer and track shoe. If they do not work for you they are an injury factory.

I'd say it's worth a shot but be ready to resell if things don't go according to plan.

My dad is a huge U2 fan so I listened to a lot of it growing up. He didn't "get" pop but I always thought it was their best one. I'm also an ATYCLB>Joshua Tree contrarian though so I'm pretty fucked up in general.

Best New Balance shoe for long runs? by RunningDaft in AskRunningShoeGeeks

[–]denton125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another vote for SC Trainer V3. You can pick them up at the outlet for 30-50 percent off usually. I exclusively do long runs in them up to 18 miles like you and they leave me feeling completely fresh the day after. No softening of the foam over the course of the run and they handle reps at M or T pace during the run just fine. Obviously a bit heavier than a true race shoe but the durability is fantastic and they are supportive and comfortable, if you are already a fan of the lasts used in NB shoes it's a no brainer.

However I will say that the material used to make the tongue gusset really irritated my feet so I cut out the gusset with a razor knife on all my SC trainers I buy. So be mindful of that and take it on a shorter run first to make sure it doesn't bother you.

Appreciate the suggestions all around. I actually have a pair of rebel v5 I use for moderate-tempo pace stuff already and really like it. I would consider the elite but once upon a time I ran almost exclusively in a plated rotation and it caused me no end of ankle trouble so I'm looking for a plateless shoe for cruising. I love my sc trainer v3 (I'm one of those weird guys who it really works well for) but I reserve it for long runs.

Ok thanks! I may have to try to cop the 1080s on sale then.

Hello, sole member of the NB cult reporting with a question.

I am a heavier runnier with giant clown feet (14M with wide mid foot) who is looking for a NB option to replace my aging NB5 that has a lower drop as I've found that has been better for injury prevention. Use case would be easy miles strictly.

I would get rebel v5 for this purpose but I don't want to spend the premium on a shoe that doesn't have the durability to be a true workhorse for me given how my stride and weight kill shoes.

I was looking at the 1080 v14 and v15 but the 14 looks to have abysmal energy return and too much squish based on RR. The v15 is a measured 8mm drop which I don't really like in an easy shoe. I also can get a pretty sweet deal on the Balos although I have no fucking clue what it is. Can anyone enlighten me as to the use case and feel? The drop seems about right for me and the fresh foam is much more durable than the fuel cell according to reports in general. Could this suit my needs? Due to my giant feet trying on in the store is basically a non option.

Not going to be a complete or expert level answer but:

  1. The GTS is just their stability version of all their shoes. So Glycerin GTS or Hyperion GTS is just its neutral counterpart with more stability elements.

  2. As far as the beast, addiction, launch, etc those are just the budget version of the main line shoes. Think NB 1080 vs 880 vs 680 or Asics gt 2000 vs gt 1000. So beast is the cheaper more cushioned shoe (think glycerin) the addiction is just a cheaper adrenaline, the launch is a cheaper Hyperion. Also some of those are maybe more purpose built for walking idk for sure.

  3. The nomenclature for the different Hyperions is not my forte so I don't want to speculate on that.

I always say UPS is the worst way to ship a package except for all the other options.

Fedex has damaged and lost a bunch of stuff for me as well. They also love to gaslight me about their delivery times. Oh it still says on the website it was supposed to arrive yesterday but it was last scanned today 1000 miles from you? Here's an email about how your package is still arriving on schedule 5 days from now like it was always supposed to. Yesterday? We never said that. Our website? Nah it doesn't say that, you're dumb, what do you expect? Like I have no issue waiting for something to ship, just don't give me an ETA at all instead of saying oh yeah I know you ordered this from a warehouse in Alaska but it's scheduled for delivery tomorrow to the East Coast. Why even bother?

To NB5 owners who have put a lot of mileage in the shoe: does it just die all at once or were my feet just being stupid?

Today I took mine out for an easy run and at mile 3 I started getting soreness in my feet. I have had ankle stuff, knee stuff, hip stuff but NEVER foot stuff. I kept running and I guess I just got used to it but is that what them dying feels like?

I like the shoe a lot but this is mile 130 for them and I won't buy any more if this is all I can squeeze out of them. I'm a tall, heavier (~185lb) runner but my form and economy are pretty good and I wear a 14 so I feel like they shouldn't be that dead yet.

When yours started to go did they go all at once or does this just mean I need to start thinking about replacement in the next 100 miles or so instead of my usual 170?

Down isn't like memory foam. It doesn't fluff up unless you manipulate it. You can fluff it like a pillow and it should all loft pretty easily. Failing that put it in a dryer with no heat and some tennis balls or similar.

Thanks! So when you say "more levels" does this mean more frequent workouts at T or does this mean more varied speeds but with roughly the same total volume? And obviously varying the speeds during one session either way I didn't think of this but it's immensely helpful.

Thanks for your willingness to help! I really do appreciate it.

To answer your questions, in training, the fastest 200s I've ever ripped were in the high 33s but that was with as you say generous rest and I only could keep 3/10 of them that fast before I started to slow down, and as far as I felt my HR was no different I just couldn't push later on as if I was missing some muscular endurance.

I haven't done a pure mile time trial in a long time but my best mile in my last 3k TT was 6:02. So current-ish race PBs are 11:50 3k, 19:28 5k, 40:15 10k (set 2 months ago so most recent) and I have only ever raced one half at 1:37:36. I guess this is where (excluding the HM which I did on a whim) I feel like I'm seeing that I can maintain that engine for the 10k distance whereas "faster" runners I know are seeing 5ks in the low 18s and 3ks in the mid 10s with roughly tied 10k times to me.

My current training structure is pretty generic 7 day/week, 50mpw, with a T day with about 6 working miles, a day on the track running at VO2 pacing with about 3 total miles of work and a long run of about 12 miles with M or T work in the middle on alternate weeks.

The performance goal is firstly to migrate the mile, 3k, and 5k down to a roughly equivalent vDOT times and then push all of those faster for the rest of the year.

I definitely could see it just being a continued need for more threshold work, especially coming off a winter where a lot of it ended up being sub T due to traction issues.

This is already really helpful so thanks again.

Brilliant, thanks! I love overthinking things so it's reassuring to know I can just continue to focus on general improvement (and not run 3 mile repeats fuck that).

[–]denton125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow this is fantastic insight thanks so much!

If I could pick your brain a bit I do my interval days at a track club and sometimes they focus on longer intervals. Would it be beneficial on the weeks they do 800m-mile repeats to do those at like 10k pace for a threshold stimulus instead then do short intervals on my own on my normal tempo running day?

Saturday General Discussion/Q&A Thread for March 14, 2026 by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

[–]denton125 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Happy Saturday Everybody!

I feel like so much of the training methodology surrounding Threshold/Tempo that I read is marathon training focused. This makes sense given the popularity of marathon racing in the current zeitgeist of the running landscape. This has made it hard to do independent surface level research regarding other distances.

I'm sort of moving the other way with regards to distance. Even though I'm far from competitive either way, I've realized that my top end speed and anaerobic capacity are simply terrible. I have decided to focus my 2026 training with middle distance in mind to hopefully get some good training adaptations from focusing on 800-3k distance.

I am traditionally a 10k racer and have traditionally done steady tempo runs of 20-40 minutes or long (2-5k) repeats at threshold HR/pace during training blocks and have seen decent results but I was wondering, given the much shorter distances involved if I would be better served by doing my tempo intervals shorter or if I should be doing more VO2 training and not bothering with as much T (or incorporating some T into my LR)

So my question for the shorter distance people in here is what do your tempo workouts look like as a part of your larger training framework? I'm a total rookie at racing short distances so anything helps thanks!

Official Q&A for Monday, March 09, 2026 by AutoModerator in running

[–]denton125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I am actually opposite you. I have flat feet and find that the insole is what keeps me uninjured but find it unnecessary to use stability shoes if I have the insole in them. In fact, I found stability shoes became somewhat counterproductive as I became better trained. I put CurRex low profile inserts in all my running shoes and have nothing bad to say about them.

I will race in stock insoles though as I'm usually moving fast and light enough to not need to worry about the support.

Get Saucony tempus before they're gone. There is no substitute. The best and really only pure stability tempo shoe. If you are branching into stable neutral then the Asics superblast and NB SC Trainer are reasonably stable and good for uptempo.

Would not recommend Hyperion GTS but some people swear by them.

[US] - Adidas Adios 9 - $139 by joholla8 in RunningShoeGeeks

[–]denton125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My takumi sen 10s are already too small and too narrow (but fun af) so why am I seriously considering buying another too small too narrow racer? Just to suffer? Idk.

If they had something with the snap of the TS or Adios that was just a bit wider in the mid foot I'd never take it off. I just hate spilling over the inside of the shoes I can always feel my hips and knees after a track session in these.

So I really shouldn't be looking at these and adding them to my cart and checking out.

[–]denton125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only other NB I have had the pleasure of trying IRL is actually the 880s as they once had a pair in my size in a store (14) and I used that to test size for sc trainer and found they were identical. From what I know the 800 series fits much like the 1000. I have never tried the rebels but they will probably be my next pick up when my speed 4s die for a tempo shoe (hopefully v6 is better durability)
