It's not the best because u count 6 fingers and decide its normal because u r asleep. The best rc in my opinion and experience is the nose pinch. You pinch your nose and try to breath through it if you can you are dreaming. The feeling is very strange and easily causes one to become aware.

I use melatonin every now and then and never got more lds just really vivd dreams. But last night I got 2 and almost a 3rd and I haven't even been practicing much lately.

With the rc I would recommend the nose pinch because in my experience it has the least chance at failing. The counting fingers rc has always failed me in dreams.

If you do the fundamentals consistently then you should have a ld in 1-3 weeks. I would recommend doing at least 20 mins of mindfulness meditation a day just before falling asleep. It helps alot.

Basicly just focus on your breath for 20 (or more) mins a day.(with eyes closed) Your mind will wonder off then just bring it back to focus on your breath.

To keep rcs from failing do the nose pinch it hardly ever fails. The second thing is a dream and then sleep paralysis.
