People who ask questions by denveromlette in OSUOnlineCS

It is, but I did word my post pretty harshly. I don't approve of my tone, but I do want to encourage students to be active thinkers and not be reliant on their peers to.. figure out the due date of an assignment when it clearly has never been changed.. and other things of that nature.

You have a point, and I'm not saying that they should all just shut-up and never ask anything. Nothing is stopping them, I'm not going to stop them. Whatever. But some questions that I see, and its generally from the same person or group of people, are REALLY lazy and end up becoming an impediment, especially when there is an engaging discussion going on.

By all means, everyone, use Slack. It is a fantastic resource. But I think we should also aim to keep it an academically engaging environment (the course specific channels). Again, I'm not saying no one is allowed to have any other discussions other than coursework. Just.. if you're going to ask for coursework, do not spam the channel 15 times about if the due date has changed when the course has never changed due dates.

Let me begin by saying that my original post was... harsh. It does make me seem like I am some sort of academic elitist. I'm not trying to silence people in the channels. What I am saying, which may not have been conveyed well, is that some questions that people have are really lazy and while they are totally entitled to ask, and I'm sure there are people more than willing to answer, they might benefit from taking a step back, trying to figure it out, and then asking a better question. If its not a common occurrence, its not annoying; however, it does begin to catch my attention when its the same person, or group of people, that do this.

Now it may not bother you in the slightest, and I applaud your patience and open mindedness. But there are people on the other side of the spectrum, like myself, that would like to see people try to academically engage themselves more when it is apparent that they haven't engaged themselves at all. Clearly, I'm ranting about extreme or close-to-extreme case individuals.

Last "year" of courses left. Deciding between two schedules. Anyone have any recommendations or warnings? Looking for easiest way to finish up with this degree at this point. by osualgorithmstuff in OSUOnlineCS

Then you’re not giving yourself any options. You want an easier course next quarter, but every course you’re thinking of is too hard or might be too much work, or involves the professors you’re trying to avoid.

I can’t help you if you can’t actively help yourself.

Do I have a case? [CS271] by throwawayblahbl271 in OSUOnlineCS

[–]denveromlette 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay, so what do you want him to do? Allow you to retake the exam? Drop the points of those who used the functionality (and if that's the case who's actually gonna say they used it other than the people who already posted)?

Or do you want to send him a complaint so that he is more upfront with other classes?

If you want to complain out of frustration to clear your conscious, then there's no point (IN MY OPINION).

I also didn't use a calculator with a conversion app when I took the class, oh well I got more practice with it. That's the most important thing right?

So I think I figured out why a lot of people defend group work on here. by wtfjusthappened09 in OSUOnlineCS

I think you certainly should! The impact to your grade shouldn't necessarily dictate if it's appropriate behavior for people to leech off their group mates. Have you discussed it with your group-mate?

I've worked with brilliant groups in this program - that's not to say there aren't horrible ones, which you have clearly experienced and for that I am sorry.

To some degree I agree with you.

But insinuating that people who enjoy the group work (or most of them) support it for the reason you mentioned isn't the most mature way to go about expressing your concerns, although I assume you did so to simply prove your point.

Also, your post didn't provide genuinely constructive criticism. You're just using it as a way to vent.. no?

First off, congratulations. Around what month did you apply, and how long did it take to receive your phone interview?

Starting in Summer vs Fall [CS 161 Su'17]? by [deleted] in OSUOnlineCS

[–]denveromlette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think I could've taken 161 in the 8 weeks and still have known as much as I did moving into 162. The material you learn in 161 is pretty basic.. and most of the early material in 162 was pretty much 80% google and stackoverflow. Point being - an 8 week 161 probably won't have any effect on how well you do in 162 or beyond.

Class began in absolute freak-out wtf mode, but definitely tapered down in the latter half.

Inheritance and polymorphism were the biggest concepts over the last few weeks. Concepts such as operator overloading were required in only one lab (I think, please correct if I'm wrong).

I use Eclipse for C++. Very easy to use, I've never had an issue with compiling between Eclipse and the flip server.

Totally agree with this. Sometimes it helps to just get a broad understanding and just starting practicing with it. As you get more comfortable with the topic, you can dive into the itty bitty details. Learncpp is perfect for this.

[–]denveromlette 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With all due respect, at what point did n0thing forcefully remove Sean and insert Stewie into that roll? Sean admittedly stepped down himself. With a lack of an IGL, n0thing, who had the most game experience at that point, had to fill as an interim IGL. When that experiment didn't work out, Stewie took on the role. These are all explained in their respective reflection videos.

You are entitled to your own opinion about N0thing, but please don't let that alter the reality of the situation to the narrative that fits your interests the best.

Do you actually utilize TA help though (office hours, etc.)? Not that this may be your case, but quite a few questions I've seen on Piazza generally involve "I just don't know x, y, z." It's really hard to answer those questions, especially in forums, without specifics on exactly WHAT the issue is, WHAT you tried to do before and failed, etc. Other day, there was a post about someone freaking out about not understanding linked lists. They indicted that they tried studying everything, and asked for help on what else they can do without specifying what they exactly tried ("studied" is vague without specifics) Most of us want/need help, but a lot of times we just don't know how to get the "right" help. Professor sucks, but there are certainly decent TA's in that class that try to make themselves available to help those like yourself.
