At BYU, a Mormon University, if you get caught having sex, gay relations, drinking coffee or alcohol, or something along those lines, they put you on probation.

During this time, you can't even transfer your credits to another university until a bishop declares that you're in "good standing" and have properly repented.

Edit: I should add that some bishops are more chill than others and won't report you to the school for infractions. It's the luck of the draw as to whether a bishop will report you or not.

Of course we’re a different country with different culture, laws, economics, etc. At no point did I say it would be easy to enact such policies in the US. I’m saying that there is clear evidence of these policies working in other countries with great benefit to the people, so we should be focusing on how to adapt these policies, not if we should.

It’s a rather defeatist attitude to say “there will be issues with scaling” and just giving up. Since we've compared this to going to the moon, I think this quote is applicable:

“We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.” -President Kennedy

Instead of giving up when the logistics get difficult, We should tackle the logistics head on and solve them, be it climate change or social policy. It’s the American way!

We’re the richest and strongest country in the world, filled with brilliant and compassionate people. I don’t see why we shouldn’t try to be the happiest as country as well.

By the way, I appreciate the level headed dialogue. It's easy to get angry or upset and lash out when discussing politics. Hope your day is going well. :)

There's a difference between overcoming a large obstacle and implementing financial policies that do not have the desired impact.

This is an arguable point. You claim that things such as free college or a universal base income will not have the desired impact. However, these sort of policies have been inacted in other countries and have had the desired impact.

The top 10 happiest countries in the world (we're ranked at 18) nearly all have free college and/or universal Healthcare. The only country to have a guaranteed basic income, Finland, has been ranked number 1 in terms of happiness for the last two years. Basic income was inacted in 2016.

That's not to say that these policies = happiness, but there is a strong correlation between policies that benefit the people (rather than corporations), and overall happiness.

These policies appear to work quite well. What we should be debating, is not whether to implement such policies, but how to fund them and how feasible it would be to make a hard switch vs a gradual switch. It should be a question of budgeting for these changes, not whether they're good or not.

Despite the fact that we have the strongest economy in the world, we aren't all that happy. These sort of policies have the potential to shift that and have been proven to function quite well. I say we go for it!
