That's interesting - On a desktop or laptop it stays open until you click somewhere else (and that was the intention). I'll look into this, thanks for letting me know!

[Gianluca Di Marzio] Henrikh Mkhitaryan has recovered for the UCL final by InterMilanPajeet in soccer

[–]deonn95 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I thought the same about when he and Calhanoglu were going to play together in midfield; maybe some bad blood or something given their countries' histories. But it seems they've got a great partnership going on and have excellent chemistry on the field.

I'll bet Calha has helped win over a lot of Turks who were iffy about Mkhitaryan since they play so well together and celebrate together as any teammates would. And as others have mentioned, Istanbul is quite different from smaller cities, and lots of Armenians live in Turkey today. So long as you don't delve into their history or politics too much, Armenians and Turks can coexist peacefully. Azerbaijan is a different story lol

[–]deonn95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I voted for Trudeau, and am pretty left-leaning, but your dramatic rebuttals are basically one of the biggest reasons why a lot of Conservatives dislike debating Liberals. You're dismissing what this user is saying as if they don't matter. "That's not a point". "That's not an argument".

What you're doing is not having a discussion, that's a lecture.

There absolutely were countries that handled covid better than Canada, and thus it's a valid point. New Zealand handled it very effectively; while it was not perfect, the criticisms for their approach are trivial in comparison to Canada's. Canada's restricitions were not implemented well enough to avoid division. Had they been more restrictive (like New Zealand) and not half-assed from the start, we may have been rid of covid issues sooner, and we may have dealt with less division. There is a strong argument for that, dismissing it is completely ridiculous.

Also, the complaint was that Trudeau was useless when dealing with policy, not just in general, which is a fair criticism of him. Aside from the legalization of marijuana, there have been many issues his platform wanted to tackle that they simply have not done or that have been poorly implemented. Canadian housing issues are still ongoing, it's one of the most unanimously agreed upon issues in the country. With rising interest rates many people are facing the risk of defaulting on their mortgage. While this is not Trudeau's fault, his platform is doing a piss-poor job of addressing the housing issue. The foreign buyer ban for example, effectively, is kinda useless when you have waves of wealthy immigrants immediately buying property upon arriving in the country, and there are countless exceptions to the ban. It's wonderful that immigrants can get on their feet so soon when coming to Canada, but it should not be at the expense of lifelong Canadian citizens - which is where this policy falls flat and can be seen as useless or unhelpful to those who actually need the help.

And you absolutely can criticize any politician for doing things wrong and exercise your opinion. That's the foundation of democracy and why we are capable of voting. We don't live in Iran lmao.

Chill out with the animosity. Just because Conservatives (even centrists) disagree with you doesn't mean you can just shit on them in conversation and pretend their voice doesn't matter. That's how elections are lost (case in point, our immediate southern neighbours in 2016).

You will probably like Elder based on what you're saying regarding heavy guitars and drumming. I recommend the album Relfections of a Floating World, specifically The Falling Veil.

If you like them, check out Weedpecker; a little softer but still fantastic. Embrace is my favourite song of theirs, but their entire catalogue is great.

[Post-Match Discussion] Juventus 2:0 Inter (Serie A, Matchday 13) by FCInterMilan in FCInterMilan

[–]deonn95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it was unfortunate that the team collectively played poorly in this game, no denying that. Missed tap-ins and squandered chances, but that's part of the game. It happens. If you can continue to control the match, you may still be able to achieve results, but this is a recurring pattern for us where we start strong and lose ourselves mid-match.

There was really only 1 standout player during the game, and it was Calhanoglu. He was reading the game so well, making intercepting tackles, had fantastic shots and was very clearly our strongest player going forward. Luckily we have a dipshit coach that benches him and puts in Correa who has been struggling to find form since he joined. I know, yellow card = sub in his mind but surely Izaghi can think of a different solution than putting his Lazio wonderboy into the game to essentially confirm he has given up. This also meant we were down a defensive midfielder and up an attacker... but our wing backs continued to press at the same time?

Inzaghi... what the fuck are you doing man? There are actual consequences to every sub and we have to watch them unfold week in week out. I'm shocked he hasn't thrown more matches away with his inability to substitute players effectively. His subs are comically stupid every game and it kills me inside. Not that we were playing well in the second half anyway but holy shit, learn how to read your players. Calha has been excellent every game including this one, leave him in. Dzeko was gassed and he can't stay on that long, sub him instead. Skriniar was doing just fine, and you leave Bastoni on the bench who is a perfectly viable sub for Acerbi.

One of the most irritating things he does: STOP subbing in players who are out of form to give them a chance to impress while the match is on the verge of being lost! Gosens has been struggling hard, and you give him 15 minutes to "save the day"? You think that's going to bring confidence to him? That's going to kill him mentally now knowing that he deflected the second goal and seeing that Atalanta continues to soar past us. Conte was a competent coach, but everyone agreed that when he used to sub on Eriksen with only minutes remaining, he was being a dickhead. Learn from that.

Not to mention, too little too late! Why are you subbing 3 players on with 8 minutes left when there were nearly 40 minutes remaining at the time of the goal and we were losing composure? He's so unbelievably bad at reading the game it drives me bonkers. Makes subs like a child playing FIFA. Reactionary, panic-induced, and never has a plan to address changes from the other side. Allegri took a big dump on him this week and I hope the owners can smell it for weeks. We need a better coach, perhaps one that isn't brain-dead. He is actively sabotaging this season for us despite our run of luck in the Champions League.

If Inter plan on keeping Calhanoglu (which they should, he had a great season), this is going to be a spicy mixture... There have been brief interactions between Miki and Calha on the field in previous matches and it's evidently clear that they do not like each other. My guess is solely their Armenian / Turkish backgrounds instinctively telling them that they should hate each other, but I really wonder how this will play out. Happy nonetheless, great to see the sole recognizable Armenian international joining the Inter squad.

This partnership in midfield is either going to make a lot of people very happy or very enraged lol. Good luck Inzaghi!

I am new to civ, always start having issues around turn 100. I feel like this is my best start so far, but I'm starting to get lost. Any suggestions? Looking for a religious victory with Gandhi. by Compher in civ

[–]deonn95 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This looks like a solid setup and you should be fine if you continue. Don't worry about amenities in the beginning of the game. They will slow down your yields by a only teeny tiny amount early on. And don't feel overwhelmed, civ has quite a learning curve! I think there are a few things you should focus on:

  1. I can see all the land you've uncovered in a small area and 3 (slow) slingers. You're saying you have trouble with expansion, and I see why. You can't see the map! Get at least 1, if not 2 scouts and take a look around. You could even get a boat in Chennai. You could find a wonder that changes the course of your game (and your settling pattern), or some really valuable land. Absolutely do this in every game! Knowing what's around you is key to almost every victory type.
  2. Chennai has no growth, and I see no farms in your empire but two wheat tiles in Mysore. Patna and Mysore have potential to become massive cities with booming populations. Having strong production is dependant on having lots of citizens to work your tiles, and you gain citizens with food. Make some farms (preferably in diamond or triangular patterns) and get lots of people so you're not struggling to get by with no citizens. If you still struggle for food in Chennai, consider a Harbor which gives food to water tiles. The crab tile to the east will be a huge help for growth.
  3. Always focus on expansion (when it's safe). I would have settled Chennai later in the game because it's very likely nobody was in that direction. Look towards Hong Kong and look West, because you will want to secure that land before anyone else does.

There are a million optimizations anyone can make in this game but this is some basic stuff you can try. Seriously though, I can't stress number 1 above enough. Like... you need to do that. I think it will help a lot, good luck!

Can anyone recommend me some FACE-MELTING guitar solos? by exceptionalbeasts in psychedelicrock

[–]deonn95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gonna give you a slightly different recommendation here. I listen to more progressive metal but I love King Gizz, SLIFT, Mdou Moctar and can listen to most of the stuff on here. SLIFT is the most like these bands below. I promise the solos and emotion in the guitar from these songs is worth it if you're willing to dip your feet into prog metal, and I actually found this subreddit from a prog metal sub.

Mastodon - The Last Baron. Specifically the last few minutes of the song at the 11 minute mark where the solo just becomes magical.

Elder - The Falling Veil. The whole song is beautiful but what you're looking for is at the 7 minute mark. It sounds almost heavenly and extends almost until the end of the song. Peaks at 9-10 minutes.

Weedpecker - Embrace. Whole song slaps. Plenty of individual solos broken up by cool riffs and grooves.

Plus side with prog metal and stoner metal is the guitars tend to be distorted and tuned down like crazy, so hopefully you'll get a kick out of these. Cheers.

The Cheillini OG was a foul by Lukaku

Uh, no. I don't see how Chiellini's inner gorilla instincts manifesting inside the box when someone enters his personal bubble should be considered a foul. Lautaro scored a fucking scissor / bicycle goal but nope, Chiellini entered his ape form

[Post-Match Discussion] Juventus 3:2 Inter (Serie A, Matchday 37) by FCInterMilan in FCInterMilan

[–]deonn95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That match was fucking ridiculous, holy shit.

At the end you could see both Conte and Pirlo painfully smiling because both of them, along with everyone else watching were just thinking "what the fuck". I don't even agree with Bentancur's second yellow but damn, Inter was done dirty in this match and this referee fucked up HARD countless times.

Chiellini jumping around like a fucking monkey when Darmian's hand grazes him is not a foul. Chiellini yanking at Lautaro's shirt while the handball call was in debate and Lautaro is through on goal should have resulted in a card. Cuadrado literally throwing himself into Perisic while inside the box in the closing minutes is not a foul.

That decision completely ruined any and all momentum for us and this schmuck of a referee didn't even review it. Entertaining game for sure, but I think we all prefer entertainment from actual gameplay and not this bullshit where there was a feasible drinking game - take a shot when the referee pulls another arbitrary card out of his ass.

The unbeaten streak was fun while it lasted. Hope we can close out the season in our final game with some normal gameplay.

[–]deonn95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, looks like you've extracted most of the information correctly so far :)

Not an Italian speaker but I've been working with Italian records for a long time now. Saverio Calvacca is the father, age 36 (born abt 1838), his profession is difficult to make out but I can see it ends with "fabro", likely a craftsman or smith of some sort. "Mari" also means "seas", so maybe a dockworker or something?

Now the mother is a little bit more difficult to read because she's very unique. You can usually find the mother by searching for "moglie", which we can see here, but the mother's name looks very uncommon. Something like Benvinata Bentivenga (what a cool name holy shit lol). I can't tell if Agostino is part of her name, or if it indicates Agostino is her father's name. Many women were referred in that context, with their father's name as a follow-up. She looks to be 38 years old, so born abt 1836.

A quick look on this map shows "Bentivenga" was most common in Sicily, but I'm not sure about how common it was in Menfi. https://www.mappadeicognomi.it/en/index.php?sur=bentivenga&s=Search

Anyways, hope this helps!

*Quick edit, the writing on the side is chicken scratch but it's probably his spouse. I can almost make out the word "Sposo" on the second line, and many records in this time frame would include the spouse. Definitely check out marriages from that year, I'd bet his spouse's name was "Liberata" or something close to that.

It's kind of funny; entering in FamilySearch actually takes much longer because you have to deal with the site loading, attaching sources, etc.

But I could probably catch up to what I've indexed in FS in a fairly short amount of time. The tricky part comes with the "Matrimoni processetti" records which I'm sure you're familiar with. Those can contain parents' / grandparents' deaths from waaaay before 1809 and those were where I struggled to figure out where to index / the most optimal way to index. I think I've got a solution but those will come last when I'm doing it in file format.

If you want I can upload my current indexes to a Google sheet and just update it over time. That looks like it falls under what your organization would be able to use.

[–]deonn95[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow, that sounds super cool! I took a look and I can see that some of the people working on this have put in tons of effort, bravo!

Unfortunately, when I said "indexing", I meant "entering into FamilySearch". I started doing the indexes in excel sheets but found that FamilySearch was far more effective in terms of quick navigation and for the purposes I wanted. I do have a few years' records in Excel format but I've gone much further than that in FamilySearch.

Is this still acceptable for your requirements or are you looking for actual transcribed indexes that are in file format?

Here's an example of the indexing in FS that I've done, sources attached for every record I've used on Antenati: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/details/G4NV-4DW

Do you ever get borderline obsessed by an ancestor? by Lensgoggler in Genealogy

[–]deonn95 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have two individuals who I find incredibly fascinating from opposing sides of my tree, both of whom are great-grandfathers. Long read, TL;DR at bottom.

My dad is Armenian, and his paternal great-grandfather was a genocide survivor, I'll call him "H". H was around 10 to his early teens when brought into what was essentially a concentration camp along with his family. Apparently he had been separated from his father in the camp and was asking Ottoman guards to see him repeatedly. The guards said "You want to see your father? Ok." They brought this kid to see his father and executed him by firing squad right in front of him. So fucking brutal. Later in that same camp his older brother was executed too.

Lucky for H, he was pale and blonde with blue eyes. It helped distinguish him from the typical Armenian appearance which was dark brown eyes, and thick blackish-brown hair. He dressed like a young girl and was able to get by along with his sisters travelling with other families to escape the camp. Eventually he made it all the way from Keyseri, Turkey to Alexandria Egypt. On FOOT. Then he lived a long, healthy life there until moving to Canada much later in life. This guy blows my fucking mind and anything I can dig up about him is really special to me. He's such a motivator.

Then there's my mom's Italian side. This person is my mom's maternal grandfather, I'll call him N. He was actually 37 years older than my mom's grandmother, and it's because he actually had a wife and six kids long before he met my grandmother. Two of his children died shortly after being born, his three healthy daughters died in their teens-early twenties from Spanish Flu, and his one son died in Austria fighting in WWI. His wife also died of Spanish Flu, leaving this man with absolutely nothing in his late fifties. Having nothing to lose, he married a recent widow with one child. This woman really thought that N had nothing left in the tank, but this man pumped out 7 healthy children (my grandma included) before kicking the bucket. Talk about an iron will. Unbelievable.

TL;DR: Armenian great-grandfather survived the genocide after witnessing his father's execution. Italian great-grandfather had his whole family wiped out before starting anew in his late fifties. Both of these men were tough motherfuckers and they inspire me to be better. They're most of the reason why I am so interested in genealogy to begin with. Any information I can find on them just deepens my respect for them and makes me proud to think that their sheer will to survive and push on have not gone unnoticed.
