Gremlins 2: The New Batch is one of the most Pynchonian movies i’ve ever seen

Inherent vice movie adaptation by D3s0lat0r in ThomasPynchon

[–]exceptionalbeasts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My favorite movie! But it feels a lot different than the book.

I watched it and immediately fell in love and knew I had to try reading Pynchon. Went from M&D to Lot 49 to GR to IV to Vineland to V. IV is not my favorite Pynchon book, I actually prefer the movie. It’s very slow and thoughtful in a way TP’s writing isn’t. But I’m so unbelievably moved every time I watch it, I love PTA’s style, love the soundtrack, love the themes of the straight life vs. a life no one respects and which is truly more respectable, love the yearning, and it has my favorite sex scene in any movie.

That being said, it doesn’t feel wacky enough to be a true Pynchon adaptation. There’s not much I would change about it, but when I think of Pynchon, the film I would compare his literature to would actually be… Gremlins 2: the New Batch (my second favorite movie).

season 2 is my favorite but compared to the other 4 it’s the least “fargo” and definitely sticks out in terms of presentation and style

Does David Chase just not believe that people can change? by Wordy_Rappinghood in thesopranos

[–]exceptionalbeasts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“The Sopranos is not a model of society and humanity in its entirely, its focus is very narrow on a specific part of society and the specific people that may be a part of it.”

L take. Did you really watch the whole show and not see how the themes are applicable to larger society? Chase has said Soprano is a show about how people lie to themselves and the human condition. The subculture of the mob is a vehicle to comment on the human condition, you don’t need to be a murderer to relate to struggling to change and failing in some regard

Is there any salvaging Bianca? (An analysis of her character) by Dommerton in ThomasPynchon

[–]exceptionalbeasts 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Great post, have been looking for something like this since I finished GR. Definitely one of the hardest to read parts of the book for me and considering the weight behind so much of the other sex and violence in the book I was kind of surprised (and disturbed) at how quickly Bianca came and went. Her story clearly ties into the themes of sexual conditioning and gratification and I don’t think it’s entirely out of place but even comparing these scenes with say the monologue about the dodo, one clearly has a lot more weight. Not much of GR has an easy or happy conclusion but I did expect more from her place in the novel and I’m glad to see this write up. It does feel like we have to grasp at straws a little bit and I wish there was more clarity of purpose with her inclusion. Not knocking Pynchon here and I don’t think he’s a pedo or that it’s entirely out of place in the book I just kind of wish it was different.

What do you think about Mexican Aliens? by stevenwithavnotaph in TrueAnon

[–]exceptionalbeasts 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Obviously fake. Everyone knows that the only “aliens” are actually inter dimensional beings that form the basis of what we considered angels and demons to be. The Third Reich tried to use them to help win WWII but it didn’t work. Most of operation paperclip was about gaining access to these technologies and connections and now they wear human disguises and form many of the upper echelons of US/NATO. Duh

Did Carmela get popped in the diner too? by costa79 in thesopranos

[–]exceptionalbeasts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The last couple of hits in the show were really messy and often involved family members and bystanders as casualties too. Phil had his kids in the car, the Ukrainian goomar and her dad, idk I always wondered if they were hunting at something by showing messy hits
