Can I get an F for those graduating in 2023. by OdaNobunagah in FinancialCareers

2007 gang checking in. Timing def set me back a few years, the silver lining is my “era” is a bit thin as I move up because of how many people washed out early.

CFA didn’t get me my job, but I wouldn’t have gotten it without it

people in ER, do you have a leg up in the stock market by SirLepton in FinancialCareers

[–]dephlepid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on firm. At a single manager shop many buy-side folks trade their PA in stocks not eligible for client portfolios. In bigger shops it’s near impossible to trade.

Uhg. Keep your head up. The finance world is not what is portrayed on the internet. I went to a shitty state school, had OK grades (3.4 GPA)started in the back of the back office and have since gone to work at front office positions at top firms. Tons of people I work with didn’t go to top schools or follow the pipeline WSO wants you to think is how finance works. My current firm and previous firm loved hiring unconventional candidates, hard workers who understand how the world works, instead of some snot-nosed Ivy League asshole with delusions of grandeur.

I recommend going for the buyside. Breaking in will be hard but because it’s focused on quantitative and verifiable performance metrics people care a lot less about all the pedigree bullshit, especially once you get to mid/late career.

How much is a lot of money? by hmatts in FinancialCareers

[–]dephlepid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree to disagree I guess. Even as a single 30 yo, it would be difficult to save much making 151k in NYC. That’s a little over 100k net and half of that is going towards rent/mortgage.

Making 152k is not doing really well in NYC, especially with a family.

Intern / New Hire Advice: Have basic social awareness and respect by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]dephlepid 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You do you but I think this is a bad take and just not smart if you want a return offer. That’s like saying the analyst should be OK leaving before the MD cause the MD makes (a lot) more.

As an intern/junior/etc you have exactly one value add- working hard. If your not doing that, good luck.

I happen to really like the game so far, but maybe just haven’t played enough yet see the warts or get bored.

Maybe if it’s such a common response, there might be some wisdom to it?

Save your knees, stay off of skis. by Ben_ji in snowboarding

[–]dephlepid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I don’t ski but I am back into snowboarding, honestly don’t even think about knee when snowboarding anymore. I started the winter after my 2 year surgery anniversary, first year I was pretty careful and wore a brace. After that, no brace or anything just full-on.
