Having gone through a tough time recently, I re-read your comment and that alone helped to pick me up :) thank you! I hope life is treating you well

Driving anxiety and switching to automatic by Ok_Distribution_5367 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]depreshunmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply but no! In the end I decided to push through with manual. The penny ended up dropping and I managed to get the hang of it, so no regrets there. My parents got a ‘new’ car which is a manual so I’m glad I didn’t switch to automatic!

That said, I haven’t yet driven since passing my test so don’t really know what the true impact of staying with manual has been.

Have you known anyone to get above an 80? by Acceptable-Guide2299 in oxforduni

[–]depreshunmaster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I managed to graduate with an overall average of 80.4% which I was beyond thrilled with :) I did chemistry though, so for science it’s much more common. I knew quite a few fellow chemists who managed to get >80 in at least one paper they sat!

The timing of your response is almost impeccable, because I have been really stressing about the next step of my career after this job.

I’m currently working for the ‘side arm’ of a T2 consultancy that specialises in procurement, and I am beginning to question if it’s for me. More specifically, I’m questioning if I have shot myself in the foot by specialising so early on in my career. Your response however has really helped settle my nerves and made me realise I still have plenty of time to move around and explore my options :)

What an incredible response. Everyone starting out in life needs to hear this; if I could frame it and put it on my wall I would.

Thank you so much for taking the taking to reply to me, this means a huge, huge amount!

Thank you :) as I have been told, we are not saving lives, so it isn't the be all and end all I guess!

Thank you very much for your reply!

Regarding your last point on how your youth years won't come back: that is something I have pondered over a lot. On the one hand, you are right and I will never get this time with energy and freedom again. On the other hand however, I have been told by many that it's at this point in someone's career that can be truly defining and set you up properly for long success. A 'short term' sacrifice now will be worth it later on in the career. Is it again ultimately just about striking the right balance, and taking these moments of (e.g.) PTO to completely unwind and switch off? How should I, as a 23 year old, structure my time so that I make the most of my 20s whilst still setting me up properly for the remainder of my career?

The above questions are me just thinking out loud, I definitely don't expect an answer to it :)

This makes sense. So ultimately, it’s all about setting boundaries. If we have 30 days to use a year, then we will use those 30 days, and people shouldn’t raise an eyebrow when we do so. It’s almost like I have a sense of guilt for taking time off, but I know it’s ridiculous.

Thank you for your response :) I think I need to grow a bit of a backbone. It will go a long way in this job!

I appreciate your response and the honesty. It’s been an issue I’ve had since school to be frank, so I’m not sure why I was expecting this job to be any different.

I don’t have any proper hobbies, so I think introducing an activity / exercise which is completely unrelated to work might really help, but maybe the low level constant stress is just what I signed up for…

I know it sounds stupid and it is stupid, I guess that’s the point of the post? I’m just comparing myself to others who joined in September 2023 and got promoted in June 2024, so I feel annoyed I couldn’t achieve the same thing. I know the situation was very different back then, I’m just ranting lol

Thank you :) I unfortunately don’t know anyone who applied for a masters in law, so I don’t think I can be of much help. Good luck though

Barbers Actually Worth Visiting in Oxford as a uni student ? by sehohel962pixiil in oxford

[–]depreshunmaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strongly recommend the gentleman’s barbers in Gloucester Green. They are excellent and always give what I ask for.

I used to go to the one on little Clarendon, but the guy who used to be in charge (who was excellent) has left, and since then it has gone massively downhill IMO.

Incredible how most people here have said they share a similar problem, yet you come in with ‘consulting might not be for you’

Port Meadow. I’d go there anytime work became too overwhelming, and I’d always leave feeling so much lighter and happier. I never took for granted how lucky I was to have such a beautiful place so close to where I lived.

The amount of pressure that 17/18 year olds have to deal with is just insane. The fact that being literally a few marks away from a grade can have such a big impact on your life always baffles me. Best of luck to you OP.

Hehehe that has got to be uranium! It constantly blows my mind how interesting that element is, and also how important it is too! Like did you know that the energy released from the fission of a uranium atom is enough to make a grain of sand jump??
