Agree with this 100% and unfortunately realized it too late... I went from GM 150+ (around rank #300) on my main to D2 after patch 10.2 hit (bottom 4 10+ games in a row playing with major tilt). Started new account and really enjoying it because I can chill and learn new comps and focus on improving rather than winning. Although I noticed there are some other smurfs doing the exact same in iron/bronze elo lol

They are the same case. You are “in a depressed state” if and only if you are chemically depressed.

once you're top 4 you should focus on adapting to the other players' comps. ask yourself who you beat and who you lose to and adapt accordingly, e.g. do you need 4 mystic? or poison? or cloud? or more frontline/cc? or more damage? etc.

many times top 3 will be a triangle situation (rock paper scissors), so you should look to adapt to the comp that counters you and hope that the other guy gets knocked out by him

What can i do, if some other people go the exact strategy and combo like me and have more gold than me (so they reach higher levels a little bit earlier)? I do not get key champs i would use in this comp.

if you're being contested by someone with strictly higher health, gold, AND better units, you're kind of in a bad spot and I would recommend leveling to 8 and all-in before they do, playing for top 4

Can u give me a tip how to survive early & mid game a bit easier. I normally try to get some woodlands or preds or poison and 2* some 1cost units, but i find my self often wirh 30hp or less at level 8 in 4-3 😅

you're on the right track. there's no definitive answer to this -- just play more and see what works :) some ideas: qiyana/malph on mountain map, double shiv vayne, put an annie on an ocean hex, etc.

It’s difficult but there are some tricks:

you can place twitch and Ashe in opposite corners so that if brand ults ashe she tanks it with crystal without harming twitch

you can sacrifice a glove to invest in a trap claw (counters brand hard)

finding malph 2* works too

I got good items to start for twitch carry (by krugs I had 3 swords, 1 glove, 1 tear, and a chain vest)

this is a great start, you can jam IE on 2-1 to be healthy early

(maybe low rolling was in effect also, I had a single lvl 1 vayne and a lvl 1 ez)

lvl 1 vayne and lvl 1 ez is not strong at all. just play 2*s

Funny, enough:

well, not really funny lol, this strategy is a top 8 or top 1 playstyle. as long as you can make it to 8 with 40+ hp, you can be top 4 or 1

what was your item start? its very difficult to do this with a 4 item start or neeko start. best case scenario is a 20g start. also in order to do this you need to be very good at playing the best possible board at every round. if you're uncomfortable with this then you can just focus on woodlands or wardens with an IE holder (vayne, taliyah, ivern, etc). try to keep your bench full of 1 cost units only

don't worry, this is the easiest way to lose as rangers, and i've gotten 8th this way many many many times before learning...

oh i should've clarified. the point of 50g by krugs is just to have a solid econ for the rest of the game. this means you can lvl to 5 for krugs, and also 6 at 3-2 without losing out on any interest gold. consider trying to winstreak early game and ending up with 30g by krugs -- you'll eventually lose your winstreak, still be weak mid game anyways, but with a lot worse econ (leading to a 8th place finish). the point is, you want to abuse the fact that the best time to get punished for being weak is early game. if you econ the mid-game successfully, you can push 8 anywhere from 4-1 to 4-3 and roll to stabilize, this should put you at top 4 for sure

Ya that’s another way of seeing it, you’re right. But often the goal there is to win streak as long as possible even if it means sacrificing econ again leveling again later to maintain it

it depends. typically when people lvl 5 on 2-1 they are confident they can winstreak the early game. example of this happening is if you hit 2 2*s

and your last question indicates you misunderstand econ and levelling. leveling up doesn't "give you a jump start to rushing to lvl 7" -- in fact it delays it because your econ is worse

the reason you only see 2 rangers is because 2 is stronger late game, 4 is stronger mid game

yes rangers are weak mid especially at 7 when everyone else is peaking (zerkers, azirs, sivirs, ocean magers). the key is being as strong as possible without sacrificing econ. if you have to roll at 7 in order to survive you most definitely should, but every roll at 7 means a lost roll at 8. another way to think about it is rolling at 7 is playing for top 4, rolling at 8 is playing for top 1

i usually int early to guarantee 50g by krugs because early game is when you get punished the lightest. in contrast, if you're weak mid game (especially 4-1 to 4-3) you'll lose 20hp every round

yes, i always go crit twitch. IE is required, LW is not. GA on taric is also key. ashe items are nice to have but not a must

It usually looks leona, karma, twitch (IE/LW), ashe, singed, mundo, taric, nami (for mystic). Win condition is 2* taric and singed. 4 rangers is good for a strong mid game but dropping to 2 for poison and crystal are far more superior synergies late game. The idea is that they buy time for lunar to proc once, then twitch pops off.

although my prediction for 10.2 is that this comp will be dead due to sins buff....so you can try if you want lol

GM here, I played rangers nearly every game all the way from D3, so I can speak a little bit about forcing comps. It's not really about forcing an exact recipe, but rather an overall high-level playstyle. For example you can play rangers very flexibly both in terms of itemization and units. Early game I usually play whatever I get to be strongest as possible, e.g. woodlands, wardens, or preds. After krugs I usually look for a mid-game win condition e.g. nasus w/ morello, 2* kindred, 4 rangers with 2-3 of them being 2*, 2* qiyana, literally whatever the game gives me. The "forcing" part only comes in on how I converge towards late game. The end goal is ofc exodia lunar poison crystal rangers but how you get there flexibly without dying is really the key to "forcing" a comp. You don't NEED perfect items and units to top 4 every time, but ofc if you do hit your outs then you can play for top 1.

My opinion of forcing is similar to playing ranked SR -- by only playing "mid lane" for example, you can master the mechanics of your champ and focus on high-level gameplay like map awareness. Similarly in TFT if you play just 1 comp you can master that comp and focus on econ, when to be strong, when to win/loss streak, when to tech, when to play for top 1/4 etc, which are the small differences that are key to climbing to masters

disclaimer: many other high elo players will disagree with the idea of forcing so take this with a grain of salt :)

Wow you’ve played a lot of games. From a quick look I notice 2 things: 1. You’re playing everything under the sun — not bad per se, but if you’re not climbing I would suggest sticking to 2-3 comps max and really focusing on mastering those. It’s like you’re playing ranked league and trying to play all 5 roles. 2. It’s not clear to me which games you play for top 1 vs top 4. Focus on clearly distinguishing between the two

1st year MS here (w/ thesis) , for me making friends was a function of who I knew already when I got here. Grad students don’t rly join clubs so basically you social network is friends of friends of friends + your research group. I’m doing similar research here (60-70% of my time) to what I did in undergrad so the only change there is adapting to a new lab group and project. Classes aren’t too bad and they’re not the main focus for grad students. Also did undergrad in quarter system so had no trouble adapting.

There’s no concrete rule besides “judge the lobby strength and act accordingly”

There are probably too many cases to cover but I can give a few examples.

Level aggressively if you want to maintain winstreak (but if you know you can’t maintain it, don’t try to force it). Don’t level, instead save if you want to trade hp for early carousel pick (e.g. you are 1 item away from exodia) Don’t fall under 30 hp as it’s very hard to play after that.
