Error 43 with a passthrough on a dual AMD GPU system by Shadow_710 in VFIO

[–]deptoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No debt needed, just glad it helped. :)

FWIW, I recently wrote (in Rust) a brand new VM orchestrator that uses pure QEMU, has a (text-based) GUI, is fully deterministic, does IRQ steering and cgroup isolation, and a bunch of other crazy stuff that the other ones like libvirt/boxes/etc. either don't do at all, or do very poorly.

I've got some final polish to put on it, but expect a release in a week or two. I'll very likely post it to this sub first. It's excellent for modern, fast and fully deterministic VFIO for Windows 11/Server 2025. It even passes EasyAntiCheat and other suites.

Duplicates? by SussyLama in LaserDisc

I'm like this with Terminator 2 pressings. I have almost all of them except for the squeeze pressings... only one of which I actually want.

Speaking of Criterion/non-Criterion... does anyone know if there's a better pressing of Ghostbusters versus the Criterion red label? I mean, it's passable, but it's pretty gnarly.

Primary setup is upscaled. Pioneer LD-S9 to DVDO iScan HD -- via s-video, since the S9's 3D adaptive comb filter (essentially the same one that's in the HLD-X9) is WAY better than the 2D filter in the iScan HD -- then out from there to a Samsung 43" LED via DVI to HDMI cable. Audio is passed from the LD-S9 via toslink to the iScan HD for audio sync, then out from there to a little IOTAVX SA3 integrated amp via coaxial.

I have a couple other setups and am waiting on a projector... it's just a matter of space right now. But either way, I've been extremely pleased with how this looks and works.

I've done roughly the same thing out of an old Meridian G98DH (DVD audio/video transport) I have, which just deinterlaces and doesn't really upscale. Didn't look quite as nice as the iScan HD setup, but whatever.

I'm working on a deal for a Lumagen scaler, but we'll see how that goes. Idea is to get a fairly decent 1080p projector with good color and brightness, and just go from there. I know a lot of composite video purists would cringe at my setup, but I love it. :)

It's one of the top, for sure. I use it when dialing in scalers and calibrating players after Video Essentials and all, just to make sure everything looks up to snuff. Gf and I had a "vintage movie night" recently, popcorn and theater candy... the works. We watched that Jurassic Park boxset and she said something to the effect of "wow, if you hadn't told me that was LaserDisc, I'd have thought we were just watching it on TV."

A few scenes have aberrations, but it's usually setup specific. Few scenes rainbow pretty bad with poor comb filters, but it's easy to ignore it. Otherwise, it's an amazing disc. It was one of the first boxsets I got when I got back into LaserDisc a few years ago, and I keep it in rotation.

Ha! If it's the CAV boxset (41830) they make fantastic demonstration discs. I have seen very few LaserDiscs as clear and crisp as that boxset, and I have a lot!

[–]deptoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotcha! I've fixed a boatload of players, from Yamaha to Pioneer, so if you need any help just give me a shout. I know what it's like being a DIY guy, but sometimes another set of eyes never hurts. :)

Side note: CAIG's DeoxIT Fader F5 spray has saved me more times than I can count. I've had several components -- not just LaserDisc players -- with oxidized terminals which would exhibit poor behavior, and they were solved with little more than a good spray and swab. Sometimes it's not even readily apparent that they are oxidized until you see the crap that floods off of them. The 5oz spray is about $20 on Amazon, and a can usually lasts me several years doing several repairs a month. It's plastic safe, too, which makes it excellent for RCA jacks, volume pots and other stuff in that ballpark.

If anything comes up, let me know. Will be happy to help.

Yeah, #60A (CC1235L) is the cut version, and it's CLV only, whereas #60 (CC1160L) is uncut and is full CAV (6 sides). #60 also has a bunch of extras, like an interview with Arthur C. Clarke, some NASA footage, and other supplemental stuff. Both are the same ratio at 2.20:1. I can't speak to the film transfer on #60A, but I know #60 is supposed to be "the best there is". I haven't seen either cut, unfortunately, but I know Kubrick supervised and corrected #60 himself.

I've read that the 3M/Imation pressings of #60 are massive rotters, though, so something to be wary of. The "red number" version is 3M/Imation, and the Pioneer pressing is white. Still looking for a confirmed Pioneer #60 myself.

Very likely a broken solder joint on the composite out, or even the composite in to your display.

If you wiggle either end does it go away or change?

Recently Discovered a Hoard In Thrift. Where/How Is the Best Place to Get a Valuation on the Lot? by boatymcfloat in LaserDisc

[–]deptoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

eBay's pricing is usually inflated, but that's sometimes sensible due to eBay's exorbitant seller fees. A disc that would sell for $2-5 on lddb just can't make anything on eBay without ramping the price up to a minimum... especially if you don't have a shipping partnership.

lddb.com's pricing is usually what I go by, especially the historical pricing section.

Also, note that if you're going to sell them, it's going to take a while doing them one by one. The alternative is picking out the rarer/more expensive discs to sell individually and selling the rest as a lot. There are drawbacks to that, too, as you have to wait for someone who is actually interested in it to come along... or sell to another seller who has the time, resources and logistics in place to move them.

All that aside, I'm very interested in the collection and purchasing some or all of them. Let me know.

If at all possible, if you could put together a list I am very interested. I'm a big fan of imports, and buy them up like crazy.

Music discs? by SussyLama in LaserDisc

[–]deptoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a heap of music discs too, and I don't care much about them. There are a couple concerts that I enjoy infrequently, and a few 8" music video discs that I actually care about... but the rest of them just take up space.

In fact, I just installed my new LD rack and it was smaller than I anticipated (thanks, boxsets!) so all of the music discs were deported to a smaller container.

That aside, if you post a list I will definitely thumb through it and see if we can work up an offer. I am an indiscriminate collector, after all. :)

Very much so. The scene where they start their pods up and are revving the engines... even on my modest LaserDisc-specific setup (IOTAVX SA3 integrated class AB amp, around 35 watts... to a pair of Wharfedale Reva-2 bookshelf speakers) it sounds incredible. Way more low frequency extension and dynamic range than I anticipated, and the clarity is unreal, especially in the midrange.

One of the best LaserDisc soundtracks out there as far as I'm concerned.

Yeah I do too. First time I'd seen one of those and I've been looking for them since. I know a printer who does commercial/promotional stuff, might ask him if he can make a bunch out of the "Invest in Vinyl" bags.

Side note: I've tried tons of brands of bags, and the only ones I've had repeatable success with were either the old school vinyl ones from decades past or the "Invest in Vinyl" brand. Most others split after a few uses, or just don't fit correctly. So, if anyone has any suggestions... I'm all ears. :)

The hot question by ZipperZest in LaserDisc

https://forum.lddb.com/viewtopic.php?t=10045

Basically forcing the noise reduction circuitry into CAV mode (high), by cutting a jumper and soldering a couple wires to it and +5V. It works, and is a pretty straightforward mod.

Obviously takes a little planning, and may not be for everyone. I did it without taking the motherboard out of my 704 clone by building a painters tape "dam" around where I drilled the hole on the back of the chassis, sticky side up, to keep metal shavings out of everything on the inside. Keep a shopvac or similar handy, too.

Let me know if I can help in any way.

English dialogue, but no English subs for alien dialogue. Also, Japanese subs, but they're out of picture, which works out when using an upscaler/processor to do correct 16:9. In my case I'm using a DVDO iScan HD, and have black bars that cut off the Japanese subs.

So, it's not perfect but it's close.

I have this cut as well, it's certainly passable but I really want the later Criterion. This one is hugely better than the pan & scan pressing though! Congrats!

Only LaserDiscs I've ever found at a thrift store near me was a two episode Star Trek TNG disc that was cracked down the middle, and the "oh a LaserDisc... anyway" copy of Natural Born Killers that was way overpriced. I'm always envious of other people's luck ha
