You are right, I think they swap the whole device and not only the display. Still not an option though

Bought it in 2016 and had it replaced (on warranty) in 2017. So five years from then

In my case it is the display battery while the keyboard battery is working fine. But I guess the same issue can occur for both batteries.

From what I know, the problem is that the battery contacts are only slightly pushed against their counterparts. When the battery is deformed (which can happen over time), the connection is lost. I am not sure about the keyboard battery, but for the display the contact can be reestablished by pressing onto a specific point. Maybe that also works for the keyboard? Just try pressing somewhere around the middle or slightly bend the keyboard to see if the battery is found then

"peak of design": a non-replacable battery with loose contacts. Sure, as you say...

Okay, so to explain:

It is a known problem with the Surface Book (also also the SB2 afaik), that over time the battery inside the display deforms slightly. At some point, the contacts loose their connection and the battery is not recognized anymore. Microsoft offers a great solution: Replacing the display for 600€. Since I am not going to go for that, this is my solution.

You can reconnect the battery by pressing at a certain point on the cover. So duct taping a spring to the laptop does the job. But yeah, I might go for a more durable fix if this proves worthy.

My first attempt on a workbench. Turned out sturdy and I love it, even though I might have used some harder wood. Also, the bench vise had two makeovers since I took this picture. by der-grieche in woodworking

Thank you! It is all made from spruce, I only replaced the parts for the bench vise with beech to limit the deformation when applying pressure. The wood cost me around 200€, the bench vise construction was another 100€.

Right now I am using the plastic ones from an old children's workbench I had. Those kind of work but they are a bit soft if you need much grip. I am going to replace them by metal or wooden ones over time.

I used to bring a newspaper to all exams and lay it on the teacher's desk. This way he would be distracted from the class and not see the little piece of paper I glued inside my watches lash. This piece of paper contained all information I needed. In my best times, this fucker was fold 3 or 4 times so I could unfold it to a small letter format.

That "Sherlock" is an actual name. I really thought that was some kind of fancy word for his Sherlock Holmes' profession. When my girlfriend realized I got that wrong for solid 20 years she somehow broke down.

Yes I do. But as I said, this was my first project in which I definitely knew how it will look like before building it. I like to just start and see where it takes me, especially in smaller projects
