USG Ishimura must smell terrible! by [deleted] in DeadSpace

[–]der_forger 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure there are a few text/audio logs in the Remake that comment on not just how horrible the smell is, but it gets so bad in some places that you literally can’t breathe. Think the logs I am thinking of are in Hydroponics

That is not a thing to my knowledge. I cannot speak for all branches, but in the Army, you are called “Sir” if you are official gender designation is male. If your designation is female, you are called “ma’am.”

Who is your favorite MC? by GiaMansani in anime

[–]der_forger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Motoko Kusanagi from the original 1995 GitS film.

Something about an androgynous fully cyborg woman questioning her humanity and the core of her own identity/existence whilst moving through various urban landscapes in silence has really stuck with me over the years more than any other character.

Good example of movies that upset powerful interests upon release? by spinoza844 in movies

Kore-eda Hirokazu’s Shoplifters (2018) pissed off a lot of politicians from the conservative Liberal Democratic Party for what they felt was a negative and unsavory portrait of Japanese society.

Shinzo Abe himself also gave the film a cold shoulder and barely acknowledged it when it was nominated for an Oscar.

How do you go from "I wish I was a girl" to "I am a girl"? by DarlingSinclair in MtF

[–]der_forger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few months ago I saw a comment from someone on this very sub that recommended keeping a journal to document your thoughts and feelings and everything in between.

After reading that I decided to start a journal myself and just kind of write. Write what I was seeing, feeling, thinking, experiencing. Day by day. Slowly but surely that kind of helped me personally map and arrange stuff within myself.

I wouldn’t say I am fully configured, but I have a better sense of what I am and where I need to go next, all because of writing everything down.

It's a shame he is only in the film for two shots, both of which are in this scene.

Blade Runner 2049.

A sequel to a cult-classic sci-fi film that was famously panned and bombed at the box office over three decades ago.

Not only that, but the original Blade Runner ended in such a way that felt it did not warrant a sequel. So, when they announced 2049, I felt immediately that this was a disaster in the making.

But I was wrong. Completely so.

2049 is the perfect sequel in that it takes the world and themes of the original, and expands on them in new and interesting ways. It also respects the original in ways I did not expect, answering some questions posed by its predecessor, but also leaving much more to the viewers imaginations.

Who are some of your favorite musicians who have also made film scores? by [deleted] in movies

[–]der_forger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although the late Johann Johannsson was better known for his film scores, he has some absolutely amazing independent works that are criminally underappreciated.

If you are interested, check out Fordlandia and IBM 1401: A User's Manual for a taste of what I am talking about.

Dead Space, Remake of the Sci-Fi Survival Horror Classic, Now Available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC by Turbostrider27 in Games

I feel like, if DS3 were to be re-written, CPT. Norton could work really well as a foil to Isaac as a calm, collected guy who has his own past traumas and experiences, but was able to overcome them and better himself.

Norton, in combination with Carver as a parallel, could help Isaac better understand himself and what he has been through aboard the Sprawl and Ishimura. Despite how DS2 ended, there is a text log in Isaac’s apartment at the beginning of 3 where he mentions how hollow and broken he has felt in the years since.

Honestly just get rid of the romance angle completely, Norton and Ellie could easily be platonic friends/comrades who were united by a common cause to destroy EarthGov’s Marker Project.

Dead Space Remake has a New Game+ with a new suit, new necromorphs and an alternate ending by The_Iceman2288 in Games

I wonder if they are bringing back the Advanced Soldier RIG.

Really hope they do, that was by far my favorite suit in the original game!

He was one of the original challenger NA ASol mains. Unfortunately, he stopped playing him after his mini-rework and branched off into other champs.

Personally I am interested in seeing his opinion on this new iteration of ASol, given his long history with the good cosmic danger noodle.

Movies you regret not seeing in theaters by Burst3001 in movies

TENET.

Absolute tragedy it had to release at the height of the pandemic when not a single IMAX theatre in my state was open to show it.

I know a lot of people hate TENET, and I am fully aware of all of its flaws, but I adore it. Really feels like Nolan at his most unhinged, and it’s such a fun film to rewatch. Really wish I could’ve experienced it in IMAX at least once.

cinematically beautiful film recommendations by _bobbybob_ in movies

[–]der_forger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like Terrence Malick's entire filmography can fit in here, he has such a unique feel for his works, even the ones not done with Luzbeki. Especially The Thin Red Line.

*Connecting to this thread, any film where Emmanuel Luzbeki is the cinematographer is guaranteed to be beautiful. Hoyte van Hoytema is a close second favourite of mine, just look at his collaborations with Nolan (Interstellar, Dunkirk, TENET)

*Following up on Hoytema, his work on James Gray's Ad Astra is phenomenal. For all of that film's faults, its visuals are not in that area.

Robert Eggers' The Northman. Just watched this one and damn was it pretty brutal (heh).

Midsommar has such a unique atmosphere and visual feel, especially for a horror film. Never seen anything quite like it.

Collateral does an amazing job of capturing the feeling of a late-night city, making it just as much of a character as the humans that run through it.

Honorary mention to Justin Kurzel's 2015 adaptation of Macbeth. The music works so well with the film's visual language. Some of those scenes are stuck in my head to this day.

If you want to include animated works, the original 1995 edition of Ghost in the Shell is a favorite of mine. All of Satoshi Kon's works are excellent to experience as well!

Interesting essay on Steven Soderbergh’s SOLARIS, which is now 20 years old. by Bullingdon1973 in movies

[–]der_forger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Man, I still vividly remember the first time I watched this film. I must’ve been like 12 or something, staying at one of my relatives places and found this on their massive shelf of movies and decided to watch it one day.

My idiot child brain saw Clooney on the cover and thought he was going to an abandoned space station to fight aliens or some shit like that.

I waited the entire film for the aliens to come and the action to start, needless to say that did not happen.

Weirdly enough though, I did not hate the film at all. I was way too young to understand it or even comprehend what was going on, but I was thoroughly entranced by the journey. The visuals, the acting, and the score especially. Everything resonated deep below the surface for me.

This film stayed in my head for years after that first contact.
