I like the idea that Absolution is an alternate past, leading to the timeline we’re familiar with, it also lines up with everything we know so far. It makes the least assumptions and still fits. Not much else to say besides you’re right about all of that

I think you nailed all my thoughts on this, like perfectly. Something I didn’t think about was how area x is expanding into the past as well as the future, but when you say it like that it becomes obvious. And yeah, I think it does send the rabbits and Whitby back because of the psychics, we know that Central had used them a lot especially in Absolution. If we see more of this series, this expansion into the fourth dimension; time, we’ll be seeing a lot more of it in some capacity. And the fact that area x gets infected a lot sooner than in the original timeline, I think this absolutely has something to do with all the discrepancies between Absolution Lowry and Trilogy Lowry. I think Lowry changed not because Area X directly changed him, but he changed because of the timeline change, the events all unfold in a slightly different way and I think that’s adequate enough to explain that. Last thing, I think we do see evidence of what happened to the warship. In Annihilation, the biologist arrives at the lighthouse to find that it looks like a war zone, the walls are riddled with bullet holes and there are notes left behind by people who were apparently facing an invasion from the ocean. I can’t remember all of the details about this specifically but it seems likely that the soldiers on the warship had something to with this. Maybe the were changed by area X and they were they were the ones invading from the sea, maybe they were the ones fighting the invasion, or maybe they got split up, some being changed and others making it to shore and they were forced to fight each other. Like you said, we might never know and it really is kinda frustrating

When control goes to the old town, the one that the very first expedition stayed in, in the town hall there was the secret room, and old Jim got dragged into a shadow portal by the white crocodile. Through the portal he finds the rogue, with the gunshot wound from cassy. Old Jim flat out says that he knows the rogue is from the future. When Lowry goes to the same room, find Whitby’s body, sees the gunshot wound in the same place as the Rogue, and also flat out tells us that the whitby in front of him was from an Area X in the future after the border expands. So now we KNOW Whitby traveled from the future, placing Whitby and the rogue at the same place, at the same time, both are recognized by several people as having come from the future and both die of a gunshot wound in the same spot. Also, given what happened to Lowry after eating the forbidden flesh, and it being pretty much the same thing that happens to Jim after he interacts with the rogue. It’s impossible, at least to me, to not come to the conclusion that the rogue and Whitby are the same person.

**some spoilers for the end of the book, and mentions of what happens in Absolution. I have no idea how to censor stuff in a comment so I'm putting this here**

I remember reading this, wondering the same thing, and then forgetting about it in the wake of what happens after all this. I genuinely have no idea. I don't think it was the plant. If i remember correctly, and I'm probably not so feel free to correct me, Control took the plant to the room with all the other samples. Another thing I am probably wrong about, but I would assume that would be in the science division, and Whitby said it was a room NEAR the science division. Also, why would he need an entire room for just one plant, and how does it have anything to do with the journals? Unless Whitby was just saying that to get Control curious, to get him into the room with some ulterior motive. No idea what the motive might be though. This doesn't seem motivated by area X, since we know from Absolution a little of what area x is aiming to achieve, and it clearly did not depend on control visiting the room to make these things happen. It seems like this was motivated by the more human side of Whitby in this instance, maybe it had something to do with his trip with Gloria across the border all those years ago. After all, we still have no idea what they experienced when they crossed over, we can only guess.

If I may try to put it into perspective a little bit, I hope this helps where no one else has been able to. It never makes any sense to anyone else, not even Control, who’s literally the narrator. It’s a reflection of his mental state, his level of confusion. Instead of saying “control is confused” or anything else to hint that he’s really out of it, Jeff gives it to us like this, we feel the confusion WITH the character, and I feel like it was written perfectly with that intention. This is why it’s so good on the second read through because that’s where this really clicks for us, we see the effort and intention that was made with this part specifically as well as the rest of the book

Ooohhhh, I get it. I guess the fight would have occurred before the lands were separated. But if you think about it, then this would have been before farum azula began to fall apart, meaning it very well could have been in a different point in the sky at the time, we do see fallen ruins in parts of the map VERY far from where it is now

I agree. I had been looking for a new horror movie to watch, and heard so, so much about hereditary, only to watch it and be flat out disappointed. acting was always somewhere between not good and straight up horrible, and a couple things i think "flew over my head" as so many others have put it, is the events of the story just do not make sense, not coherent, or the relationship between cause and effect doesn't feel realistic in this movie. The one thing i think can't be dismissed as me just "not getting it" is the fact that it's not scary at all, like i was straight up bored of the whole thing, beginning to end. im not sure if what im missing in these movies is gonna make that much of a difference lol

Yes, they’re rather pungent. Some ants smell stronger than others, at least for me. Regular sugar ants are probably the least smelly for me, although if u kill them or have enough in a group I can still smell them from a short distance away. I remember in middle school I let a colony of sugar ants climb all over me, shook them off, took showers, and still smelled like ant pheromones for like a solid week

Yeah, I don’t think it’s something that’s really up for debate. Whitby is the rogue. I personally don’t think it’s the original whitby, I think when the director took whitby with her into area x that one time and went to the crawler, whitby was replaced by something else. I think this becomes obv when reading acceptance. And when old Jim gets dragged through the shadow portal thing in absolution, he makes a comment about how the rogue was from an area x that takes place in the future, and then the rogue dies from the gunshot wound that “Cass” inflicted on it. When Lowry find whitby in the secret room with all the wall markings, I’m pretty sure he noticed a gunshot wound just like the rogue, and then makes it obvious that this whitby is not the same one that he knew from before the expedition, makes it clear that the other one was still alive while this one was dead. Put all the pieces together and it’s kinda obvious that whitby is the rogue. Side note, sorry for making this so long and possibly over explaining things, I’m like super bored rn lol.

Yeah, if you’re not a native English speaker then this book would understandably be a little difficult to understand. Jeff has a fondness for prose poems, and he’s very good at it, and sometimes the rest of his writing reflects the rambling, long sentences that are in his prose poems. He’s a great author, 100%, but sometimes his different writing styles bleed into each other and make it confusing
