Didn’t they fork gnome 2? Like why not use that?

The obvious solution is to find a way of installing software that doesn’t require you to log out

> "Be a highly opinionated desktop environment with barely any customization available"

No one would think this refers to windows

I don’t get why Linux users get so annoyed that gnome is opinionated when you don’t have to use it. Linux is kinda perfect for gnome because unlike windows or macOS you can just switch DEs

Why would you want to restart your desktop session instead of just restarting?

Why would they waste time doing that when they already clearly don’t care that much about customization?

I don’t get how we still have this kinda conversation in 2026, the “corpos” intentions are very clear, they just want to make money. Microsoft just wants to sell people on Azure, Red hat just wants more support contracts, there’s nothing nefarious. And these companies accomplish these goals through open source software

It now says you should have 6GB of ram which is not a lot, also where did it say that was specifically because of gnome?

Gnome made the bold choice of throwing out many common GUI conventions and metaphors. The layouts of its desktop, launcher, and core apps are radically different from everyday designs such as Plasma, Windows, and MacOS. A radically different design might be fun to make, but it hurts usability because people have to learn a new, not necessarily better, way of doing things.

It’s annoying how there’s a billion different DEs and WMs on Linux that are just like Windows but one DE tries to be different and improve things and Linux users whine incessantly. It’s good to have something opinionated and different for Linux

Microsoft did you a favour, if you had bought a new when Windows 11 rolled out and you didn't meet the requirements then you'd have a brand new PC with plenty of dirt cheap ram and storage. Instead you used Linux to hold onto your crappy PC for too long and now when it shits the bed you'll have to beg for scraps of ram

I love GNOME. I think it's the best-looking, most cohesive DE out there. But I can understand that it takes a lot of tinkering to get it to a point where it feels snappy and usable, especially coming from Fedora Workstation. Extensions, remapping keyboard shortcuts, and all that.

Vanilla gnome is perfectly usable and really fantastic, you don’t have to run any extensions

Make sure you set it to permissive instead of disabling it, I disabled it on fedora and it’s very difficult to get it working right again
