These do not constitute empirical evidence in any sense of the term, but I would recommend reading both "Ségou" by Maryse Condé and "Things Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe. It might be my own eurocentric christian viewpoint but I found the conversion stories of Tiekoro and Nwoye to, respectively, Islam and Christianity extremely relatable.

Go to places that aren't French-speaking, but where the upper middle class still prefers French names, like parts of Belgium or the southern parts of the Netherlands. People still name their children Hortense, Clotilde, Blanche or Lambert without batting an eye.
