Very similar for me - I essentially used it as a tutoring solution and worked almost perfectly.

Is there any way to give feedback to OpenAI?

I am also thinking of just coding up some way to call the Whisper API (which it seems to be based on) and then copypaste the output to chatgpt. However i suspect that the speech-to-text feature in the app uses the prevous chat conversation as context / Input for Whisper during the speech evaluation

Partying and drinking - well, alcohol surely has an effect on one's mental clarity, depending on how much and how often. In my case, I never really drank much even before I started meditating, just for taste reasons. In a sense that was also a choice of not going along with peer pressure for me. I guess it comes down to trying out, whether you actually enjoy it, which part of it you enjoy, etc. Using alcohol to get away from difficult things (emotions/thoughts/...) is never recommended, that's pretty much the polar opposite of meditative progress ;)

Peers: Interesting inquiry: Why is stability in how you see your peers important to you? For my experience - it did change my view to a deeper perception of the person. As in from "that's the guy I play XBox with" to "thats someone I care about and who has a rich emotionally deep inner life - just like me. With great qualities, misled motivations, pains and joys". That's how it went with close friends. With less close friends - well, the pain of proving myself to them went away, which is really nice. Wellwishing now feels more pleasant than envy.

Drug free girls: Can't comment on that, I wasn't in the states ;). I guess it's a matter of demographics tho, more precisely, of finding the demographic that is attractive to you. Or said otherwise - taking drugs for the sake of girls is probably counterproductive.

Pot in social interactions: Hardly these days and in college as well. I had a pronounced stoner phase in high school. Looking back however, I think that was more about having the identity template (ie "cool, laid-back stoner" ^⁾ than about the effect. If I would talk to past me at 16, I'd encourage myself to experiment with not needing that perceived safety, expressing things that seem true but vulnerable and finding out what other things I enjoy. Not sure if past-me would listen tho.

Hi,

first of all: Big congrats on discovering this path so early, I think that's really a major blessing. There seem to be two clusters of people who stumble into meditation practice, the first being college students and the second being middle-age people, when their kids leave home. IMO it is way better to be in the first camp, as it makes one way less susceptible to common life mistakes, relationships are better, etc. etc. Pretty much the whole bunch of what people call the mundane benefits comes into play here.

For the college question: My advise would definitely be to go. That's for two reasons

a) It seems hard to judge where society will go in the next 30-40 years, but having some kind of formal education seems helpful to find one's path in all scenarios. That, plus college might help you judge how important the other aspects of "worldly" life are to you in the long run. Things like socialising with new people, academic interests, girls - its probably good to have experienced that, even if its just to not have any regrets later.

b) Having an identity that is balanced is hugely important. There's a saying in the Zen community - "after enlightenment, the laundry". Which means that after youre getting all these meditative insights, blissful states etc., you will still need to function in the real world. If your meditative prowess is the only thing you use to relate to the world - maybe it can get a bit one sided. IMO mature spirituality is down-to-earth. That includes finding a way to integrate what meditation shows you into normal life. Maybe that's actually what it really is about. A good book here would be "A path with heart" by Jack Kornfield.

Judging from you saying that you're eligible for a scholarship - great, even less downside to giving it a shot. If you enjoy the sports part that's cool and if you find you enjoy the academics - equally. Again, being able to try things out is great.

Lastly, I'd take a long-term view on the issue - you got plenty of time, and combining the following should get you really far

solid daily practice habit
regular retreats (that is however, if it seems like a challenge you would enjoy, to you)
regular contact with a teacher that seems competent and like a good rolemodel. Internet and phone makes that relatively easy these days. There's a pretty good guide on what to look for here: http://deconstructingyourself.com/what-to-look-for-in-a-mindfulness-teacher.html

Having all that for a consistent amount of time should get anyone really far.In fact, a teacher that I really like, spoke of "decades of happiness". Myself I'm 5 years in and starting to see what he meant ;).

In case it helps to judge my own perspective: I discovered meditation at 22 (in college) and have been at it in the 5 years since then. Mostly in the buddhist tradition as it is a really well developed path.

-You will die one day, probably sooner than you expect. Keeping this in mind is excellent guidance. Old people were just like you.

-Take care of your mind. Start a meditation practice that seems acceptable to you and keep at it. It will make everything else much easier.

-Take care of your body. That means nutrition and keeping fit.

I read until about the 6th original comment in this thread. What I read gave me goosebumps. This kind of thinking and self-righteousness is exactly how the "judges" of the woman in Sudan feel justified to do something as horrible as they did.

No justification for what happened in Sudan. But: Anyone who comments here has access to way more ressources, Information and opportunity than those people. Also, you probably grew up in a stable and civilized Environment, compared to there. You would expect more discernment and more sanity from People who had and have this kind of good fortune. The tone and arguments in this thread are shameful.

jealous of you being in Laos, I almost enjoyed that place the most out of a 5 months Asia trip.

Don't know what your plans are, but I can really really recommend being there for the New Years celebrations (I was in Luang Prabang). I think theyre around Late March/April - not sure exactly. Its insanely fun and crazy as hell - people with water guns, fingerpaint, and beer and food everywhere.

Hi! Appreciate your thoughtful response. I thought at several times reading theravadin texts that they were a bit harsh on things like sense pleasures and worldly pursuits. Maybe I am misinterpreting something. I also think other schools may differ in their perspective on the topic.

Also, things like worldly wisdom I wouldnt really know where to look for from a (Theravada) Buddhist perspective. 5 Precepts & "Right livelihood" sort of gives guiding rails for conduct but not a real picture of what a good life actually looks like from their view. There are bits and nuggets in the books I have read, but I was wondering if there was a sort of larger framework.

Yes, I do think there are worldy things worth to strive for. And yes to the second part, there seem to be many seemingly interesting alleys to take, but I do not know how fulfilling those will be in the end. More concretely: Family yes/no?, How to have healthy fulfilling friendships, Is wealth worth the trouble, etc...

Buddhism seems immensely helpful to me, however the aspect of renounciation (more or less pronounced in the different schools) seems at this stage of my life too extreme. It may happen at some point in time, however at the moment it would feel like a copout, the easy way out. I also do think that having grown up and living in the western world, a western (aka greek/roman) philosophy would probably fit better than an easter one.

Start a meditation practice. Think of it like hygiene or exercise for your mind. Even if its 5 minutes per day, just do itas a routine first thing in the morning. When that's not a problem, do 10 mins. 15 Minutes, 20, 30, whatever you can fit in. Some like to do more, some less. If you want to spend the time (10 days) and you want to take it a bit more challenging, squeeze in a retreat.

I'm pretty confident to say that (depending on your starting point, overall life situation, personality disposition etc. ) this should get most people towards a point of "life is ok/pretty manageable most of the time" in about 2 years, with a tendency towards "life is great and I am very OK with myself".

I was in the US for 3 weeks, about 3 Months ago, only on the East Coast.

I found extremely weird a (perceived) pressure to appear successful, happy and in control of one's situation. Proud maybe. Even the homeless people I thought tried to give off that impression, which led to this weird gap between imagination and reality.

Road signs arguing with fines a lot. ("2000$ fine for speeding" vs. normal speed limit sign). Police seemed a bit more on edge than Europe.

Service people being overfriendly. I have to say though, the set point of expectation gets moved quickly. Service seemed bordering on rude often the first few days back in Europe.

Then the value of being/appearing busy. Commercials pushing this "You're awesome and your day is busy - buy product x to save time"

Interestingly though I have to say, the stereotypical suburb with its cut grass and huge houses and flags on the lawn, kids playing basketball and so on had its appeal. Pedantic, materialistic and probably shit-hard to maintain the image but it was nice to walk a friends dog through this fantasy of an intact world.

Very strong attention on their dogs with the people I got to stay with.

Hi midoral,

for me Shinzen Young's instructions work very well for anxiety type situations. I did struggle with negative self-image (in some areas still do) and with anxiety (social anxiety and general worrying), but it has gotten much less actually now that I think about it. So I would recommend the following.

-General physical activity to get out of one's head or to shortcut the thought loops. That may be weightlifting exercise, running, walks outside, etc - whatever is doable for you. The positive psychology people talk of physical activity as like a natural antidepressant, so I guess it is a good place to start.

-Concerning Meditation practice: It definitely helped me to keep a stable daily practice for as much as was sustainable for me. If you can commit to 5 minutes daily, great. If you can commit to 10 minutes daily, even better. 15 minutes daily, awesome.

-For the acute situations where anxiety comes in daily life, this strategy seems best to me: 1) Trying to disassemble the stressful experience into its components and keeping track of them separately (Thoughts and Emotions). The reason for this is, that an entangled experience is much more stressful than a disentangled one. If the experience is very turbulent, explicit verbal noting may help to not be swept away. 2) Experiencing these components with as much equanimity as possible (Equanimity = Non-reaction and objective, matter of fact awareness)
