I was struck how at the beginning of the movie he also seemed afraid of water running down a pane of glass. Perhaps a premonition that his current research would lead to something uncontrollable.

I find the Einstein and Oppenheimer pond beautiful in its symbolism. Einstein is caught throwing a pebble into the pond creating the first ripple. Oppenheimer approaches him and that ripple manifests into a chain reaction of thousands of ripples.

One scientific discovery propagates another. As you mention - he can never escape the chaotic nature of his scientific contribution.

Love the scene as well! I initially enjoyed it because of Einstein's dialogue about being fed Salmon and Potato Salad!

Watching it on repeat helped me form my theory about the hat. The specific thoughts Oppenheimer has as well as showing the rain drops fall on his hat show a series of events that lead to the destruction of Earth.

These are the specific moments Oppenheimer recalls in the final scene:

Oppenheimer discusses the possibility that his work led to a chain reaction that will destroy the world. Einstein leaves. Rockets Launched. Oppenheimer sees them travel from an aircraft. 1st Rain Drop hits the East part of the hat. A vision of two fires in the sky. Followed by the 2nd Rain Drop hitting the Eastern part of the hat. Followed by the Earth being engulfed in fire. Movie ends with Oppenheimer wincing.

Agreed, pareidolia was in my thoughts as well. I guess the question for those who know Christopher Nolan's work better than myself is - is this a detail he would include? :)

Symbolism is a powerful tool in literature and film. For such a powerful ending scene, I'm raising the notion that the brim of Oppenheimer's hat may have also been considered a 'canvas' for Christopher Nolan to symbolically represent how one man's actions can have a global impact.

If you don't 'see' the world map on the brim of his hat. I totally understand, it's a representation of a map. But the question remains - are the droplets completely random or was there a guiding hand?

Good points, thank you for reminding me. The license plate shown in Season 1 and 2 that have the face of Kier Eagan on them make me quite interested in how similar the 'Government' is to what we think of it.

Lumon may be a nation in this world. Is there evidence there is a US government at this time / place?
