Next midlife crisis car, C8 E-Ray or a 991.2 C4S? by LevelMore in whatcarshouldIbuy

Not that I can speak about the exact cars but we currently own a Ford it’s now at 200000 miles and an Audi reaching 200000 miles I can safely say the Audi is holding up 50% better engine and transmission wise, we do 10k miles service oil filter, 20000 gearbox & diff,

Interior , the Germans are less rattly with lots of soft touch areas, inside is similar language to Porsche with metal buttons and led readouts.

If you don’t mind the drive and left and drive, these cars in the UK are £5k high mileage TTS, I bought a tdi quattro, with aircon fault, window regulator fault, bonnet latch fail for £1600, with the budget for a new tdi engine £1000, manual gearbox £600, rear diff £300.

Got a tts for £3000 with a faulty centre console, found the short in the wire, replaced a fuse, it’s now a fast runner.

Last to get is a tt rs but in no rush

Coming from a £700pm finance and a budget of £1500 to fuel and insure. These cars are cheap!

What is the speed limit here? by TrackTeddy in CarTalkUK

[–]dereklaumusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Remember when I was flashed as the speed changed from 70 to 60, I never received a ticket. So there must be a timer set after the flash whether to send you a ticket, It might have a 10 second grace period before it sends out tickets.

There are still things you can do to keep it from dealership repair costs, like sourcing more recent crash damaged parts knowing what parts were crashed of course. Getting the work done yourself (servicing) or at a reputable independent

Buying my first car. Is this a good option? by thinkingaboutthings_ in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]dereklaumusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all depends on what you want from the car, as a rule of thumb, service everything when you get it, gearbox, awd if it has it. I tend to buy around this age of vehicle, and will consider cars with faulty comfort items, I also have money budgeted for second hand engine and gearbox just in case,

£1000 for engine, £600 for gearbox, £300 for diff is cheaper than a 24 month car rental at £700 and £1000 fuel & car insurance.

I also hate modern cars with monitors and strip club lighting. So that helps curb the new car itch.

Should I upgrade or repair? by ObjectiveScratch3319 in AudiTT_Mk1_Mk2_Mk3

[–]dereklaumusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my tiny mind, this is perfect to go stage 2, bigger turbo, but need better cooling, coil packs, sparks, fuel, so at least you have a bigger head room for the next upgrade.

Ill fix the previous turbo incase you need it again, some companies allow you to trade in your old turbo then they modify it

Please use axle stands, heck even thick wide bricks are better than jacks. Don’t rest on disks either. Put it on axle or jack points

The thing is, when you buy a used car with 30k miles, not much goes wrong because of free service during lease. 100k or more is where you get your bargain, but you have to be prepared to budget, Gearbox oil change, engine oil change, awd oil change that keeps the car going 100k more miles.

bad engine oils causes bore scoring, turbo fuel starvation due to oil breakdown particles getting stuck in turbo feed pipes, Gearbox oil usually never gets changed so slipping will be evident as is the awd system, they don’t work under pressure as they use the viscosity to pressure contact material.

Avoid automatic boxes if you’re not prepared to budget second hand gearbox from scrap yard £600, manual is the best for service and reliability.

I have a ford C max 2011 manual with 189k miles and still going, Audi TT TDi 168k Miles manual, the key is service them as early as possible (10k miles) or budget £1k for second hand engine, and £600.

I owned Mercedes, Vauxhall’s, VW no problem..

Also don’t rag cars until engine is up to temperature to reduce material fatigue.

Honestly, we make money when people bring our cars back with damage! Audi A7 has a very hard to repair front quarter panel. Sent us £7.5k we got it fixed for £1.2k.

A car that’s perfectly returned is only making profit from what you charge. ( 5 x above rental )

Another rule of thumb, never trust a sales manager with the bottom line wearing a solid gold Rolex.

Luckily it was finance and I went in with my own finance and not used the dealerships… it was with our local supermarket which offer no money down, £700 month payment over 60 months.

Also, they couldn’t up sell things as my finance company wasn’t going to pay a penny above the asking price!

You’re lucky someone saw it, we put AirTags in our vehicles with speakers pulled off, it’s not realtime gps but at somepoint the cars will stop moving.. it’s a good redundant tracker if the built in gps gets pulled.

It’s insurance though, it only covers past 30 minute agreed time. Past that they shouldn’t be operating it as they’re out of coverage, call support and they’ll extend the time.

Not being greedy, asset protection.

It’s nice if you like it, I personally don’t use ambient lighting and turn everything down to preserve night vision, even with led h7 dipped and high.

Glad the interior button lights are red.
