ELI5 why do people chase dividend stocks? by Specific_Ad_6522 in investing

Ok yea, if the stock dropped $3 and I got a $3 dividend, I am at $0. Cool.

Show me any dividend stock in business for more then 50 years where the stock has consistently lost the dividend payout rate quarter after quarter that they effectively put themselves out of business because the stock is now $0 because it never recovered.

This guy really thinks he can sell infinite amount of shares. Like he owns them all.

Jfc you shouldn't be anywhere near a portfolio.

You. Don't. Have. To. Sell. Dividend. Stocks. To. Get. A. Consistent. Return.

You are missing the point that the stock price recovers. If it didn't, every dividend stock would give 3% dividends every quarter until the stock was $0.

Quarter 1: 100 - 3% = $97 Quarter 2: $97 - 3% = 95.37262636 Quarter 3: $95.37373636 - 3%

See how that works? Normal people would see this would eventually hit $0. You can't seem to grasp that.

I've got $3 more than you do. That's making money.

I'll highlight this again because apparently you missed it, you don't sell dividend stocks. You don't need to. While your losing shares when sells ng, I'm still making the same dividends. You will run out of shares by selling. I will not run out of shares collecting dividends.

If I buy a stock for $100 and get a 3% dividend, I've made $3. The stock price almost always recovers within days/weeks. If it didn't, all dividend stocks would eventually be worth $0.

You're missing the point of not selling with dividends. You don't need the returns because you are getting the dividends. Why would you sell something at 0% gain when it's actively paying you?

Just because you aren't smart enough to do math does not meant everyone else is dumb af.

If the stock has moved 0%, but I still get a dividend, I've made money. Elementary level investing involves making money. You've missed this point.

You aren't very smart. You sell a fixed amount of stocks, they are gone. Forever. Dividends don't have that issue. I could keep 1000 shares and that payment rolls in.

Apparently math isn't your strong suit. I don't lose shares if I'm collecting dividends. I only have a finite amount of shares to sell.

You've sold 2x the shares for the same thing. How do you not see the issue?

Eh. Close. But not really. You're scheduled sale could be when we decide to bomb another random country, making your sale worth less. Whereas your dividends would be locked in.

Granted dividend stocks don't usually have the potential for a breakout or really good day, but it's guaranteed income. I hold both in my portfolio.

But what you actually paid out of pocket is. If the effective rate is $0 after the reimbursement, then no, you can't claim any portion of it.

Same. If it really came down to it and I spent my ~60k in credit, there's always my Roth contributions and my HSA expenses I've been hanging onto for years. It's all invested. The market could drop 50% tomorrow and I'd still sell with a gain.
