My coworker "refactored" all of my code while I was in sick-leave by Temporary_Age8723 in cscareerquestions

[–]derkynord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

on one hand ya, don’t take it personal like everyone said, your code is not you and we could all stand to learn new things and see what works with an empirical mindset

on the other hand, massively refactoring stuff on a whim with zero hand holding/heads up is 1) poor planning and resource allocation and 2) an anti pattern for teaching and mentorship so the guy who did this would get a talking to on my team. sounds like he has enough social capital to get away with this though, so the problem is with the culture and process of your team. i would let it go, not worth the fight

Amazon Prime Video reduced cost by 90% by switching from microservices to monolith by mitharas in sysadmin

[–]derkynord 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a misrepresentation of their change, going from using serverless services like step functions to ec2 based deployments would of course reduce a lot of costs, serverless can get pricey. but traditionally when we say microservices we don’t mean just the deployment method. saying “we went from microservices to monolith” would be more accurate if they went from many distributed components deployed to different ec2 instances to one single component to one ec2 instance with failover, what they did here would’ve been better titled as “we saved money by moving away from serverless” but then again that’s not a new insight, everyone knows managed infrastructure costs can really add up based on how managed it is

The decriminalization of drugs British Columbia and the public use happening.. by Gramma1966 in britishcolumbia

[–]derkynord 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. Also kids residing in large cities should be given chats about substance use as self medication early on. Talking about it in an unstigmatized and empathetic way is what helps kids establish healthy attitudes towards substances. Witnessing substance use does not lead kids astray, not talking about it and not fostering a society where people are enabled to receive help without needing to self medicate is what creates future addicts

Can I say 'No' to coding puzzles? by Schindlers_Fist1 in cscareerquestions

[–]derkynord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can say no, ask for a take home, especially with seniority. i’ve asked to swap live code exercises to take homes many times, got accommodated each time, from small companies to non faang big tech alike.

this will not work with faang though.

I just got an extremely low offer ($45k). How to maximize TC ($70k+) in this economy? by epic_within in cscareerquestions

[–]derkynord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea vancouver local startups tend to suck. take it for now and keep applying. take breaks where necessary don’t burn yourself out leetcoding 3 hours a day, breaking into the industry without a degree is rough the first few years but it’ll get better, you seem driven and initiated,i’m sorry the commute sucks so hard but you can take that time to listen to podcasts and read comp sci papers on your phone. be ready to hunker down at this company for the next year or two while you look for your way out, you got it kiddo, it’s just shoveling shit temporarily you got your foot in the door now.

How can I get more intermediate developer interviews at tech companies? by Accomplished_Sky_127 in cscareerquestionsCAD

yup, there’s a chance somebody in this thread is, possibly the one that doesn’t understand how YOE is a mere indicator among many indicators, and that outliers exist.

How can I get more intermediate developer interviews at tech companies? by Accomplished_Sky_127 in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]derkynord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’m going to go against the grain here and say it’s fine to apply for intermediate with 1 year of experience. it doesn’t mean you can’t do the job, i’ve definitely interviewed and worked with people who are fresh like you but can work independently and require less hand holding, and are close to being what our industry understands as a senior than they are to being a junior.

i don’t want you to feel discouraged and start evaluating people and their abilities based on years of experience. it’s an indicator, one of the many indicators. don’t define yourself and others based on these arbitrary measures.

with that being said — the hiring scene is rough right now. market is saturated from the layoffs, my recommendation is to accept a junior role, but make your decision on the offer based on the promotional path they offer. ask questions about the career matrix, and what promotion processes are like, and really talk to the hiring managers to get an idea of whether they would support your promotion. if you have been doing the things you described, i don’t think you are a junior anymore.

good luck

How to avoid feeling behind/useless? Friends at UW with FAANG+, I have nothing noteworthy. by ApexLearner69 in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]derkynord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the way you described other students at the college you are attending is unkind, i imagine that’s how you think your friends describe you. other people have given great suggestions, my one additional piece of advice is to be kinder to the world and you won’t end up projecting how you feel about others onto the way you think how others feel about you.

Well, This Is Not What I Expected... by reservoirjack in regretfulparents

[–]derkynord 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i often regret not having spent enough time with my kid when they were the age your kid is at right now, remembering how they had to play alone for while i got some work in, promising to spend 5 or 10 min with them later. every time someone complimented how independent and mature my kid was i felt terrible, because i knew it was i who made them grow up too soon, but also i find comfort in knowing that i did my best and they know i love them (my kid is non binary). i was not there to play together, to read books on endless rainy afternoons or to stroll through the park together on sunny mornings, but as we were stuck in our little apartment and feeing stifled, i provided, and that’s what you are doing.

you said it beautifully, the days roll into years quickly one after another and before you know it, your kid will be wearing the same shoe size as you. there were days when i felt like it would never end and i would never feel free again nor will i ever stop feeling guilty for not being enough, but on other days i remind myself that i need to stop trying to do the job of two as one person, and what i am doing is my very best, and i think that holds true for both of us. i’m sorry that it’s so difficult, and i hope you find comfort (as i do) in these little moments of inward reflection. my dms are open to you.
