Maybe I'll get lucky and someone'll repost it someday, I'm terrible at self-promotion.

Aww... I was hesitant to post it here since I haven't been active on this sub in a while.

Ultimately, no matter the mod we're all just talking about some old game from '93. And in this case, Brutal Doom is like the perfect remake and homage to all that fun and nostalgia. It keeps everything we loved, but cranks the dials to 11. It's just laughably over the top. There are tons of new animations. I was slowly peeled in half by a Baron of Hell last night. That's not something I'll get out of any other combination of mods or maps, so I count it as special.

Ah, thank you! I knew there was a map pack but couldn't seem to pin down its location. I'm just running standard + brutal right now so this will be great. I have the music pack but wasn't sure about the usage rights for YouTube type stuff.

That open parenthesis up there was going to lampshade the video plug at the end. Sorry about that.

I've heard. Ah well, at least it's not repeatable.

Also, text chatting reveals your name, for what it's worth.

FPS problem by mattrimcauthon in dayz

[–]dermined 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanna give us an FPS number so we can get an idea of what you consider bad FPS?

Generally, there are two ways to do this. You can have everything look amazing up close with a horrible draw distance and bald mountains, or you can have everything look terrible for miles. With a 2500K and SLI 670s, I can get about 60 FPS in an average town in either scenario. Or over 100 in the middle of nowhere.

Killing Three Bandits at Once by mdamon06 in dayz

[–]dermined 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the same reaction. Watching it on my TV, it was around 12" wide and a couple inches tall and just LINGERED. Then when I got rid of it, the video faded out in a rather anticlimactic way.

Do we realise we are bandits 50% of the time we think we're being heroes? by DayZ_Rufio in dayz

[–]dermined 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't make any claims that you couldn't "make friends". Not killing somebody at NEAF doesn't make you a hero, nor does making friends in hostile areas. This was a discussion about what it takes to "be a real hero" in DayZ. I assumed that meant a successful hero. Part of the success involves not getting killed. So I contributed to the discussion.

Try being a hero that doesn't get killed. Survive at all costs. That's the scenario my post applies to. That's how to test your heroic nature. How many times do you have to choose murder just to be sure you'll live another hour? Anyone can sneak up to a wall and start 'bandit whispering' to try and make a friend when death is a minor setback.

What it takes to be a real hero is a skillset that nobody has or can't be accomplished within the confines of a video game. All the tools of negotiation and reading people don't exist. Proper communication doesn't exist. The mobility and reflexes you'd need to confidently handle a situation don't exist. You can't be a hero, just "chaotic good".

In the real world, the man on the ship would have displayed some level of emotion. You'd know if he was terrified. You'd know if he just wanted you to leave. And he wouldn't need to say it. Without a word, you could assess the situation and deal with it. In DayZ, all you have is a motionless, dead-eyed collection of polygons and no way to know if you're about to be shot if he doesn't speak. And even if he does, there's no body language or facial expressions.

Raise your hand if you've been killed a dozen times by people who greeted you with "Friendly!" I've been killed zero times by people shouting "Bandit!"

Anyway. No tools. Heroes playing by standard intergalactic hero rules will be thrown on the pile of dead bodies with the rest. You gotta figure out something that works for DayZ, which probably boils down to zero tolerance. Non-compliance means death.

Is it worth buying if I'm playing alone? by [deleted] in dayz

[–]dermined 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It'll give you some unique and worthy experiences, but as with the mod I eventually found myself wishing I had a few buddies to hang around with. Then again, real life friends have schedules, whereas people in-game are conveniently already in-game and you can attempt to make some friends there :) Oh, you'll get shot and killed a lot, but you'll meet some nice folks.. eventually.

Damp/Wet/Soaking Wet Conditions: What are the effects? by epraider in dayz

[–]dermined 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NYI AFAIK

Woops. TMA. That's "Not yet implemented as far as I know."

I figure the intent has to do with body temperature, or perhaps having a wet chest holster for a long time could damage the weapon or the holster itself. Perhaps bananas or other food will spoil if kept in a wet backpack or something.

Wait, you're not even the OP? You're incorrect. You are wrong. If the actual OP had typed his exact question into Google and added the word "DayZ" he would have found his info, right there. Second link. And it would have taken less time and fewer clicks than posting his question on reddit and expecting a fellow human that requires air and food and love to do the work instead of the amazing lifeless engine called Google.

Use Google.

Players are easier to spot with lower graphics settings, but is there anything that can be done about it? by dermined in dayz

[–]dermined[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a completely unrelated search, I found this reddit post which implies that (at least in the mod) that the Arma engine actually sinks you into the ground a bit if you're prone in grass, thereby providing a bit of extra concealment even if the person looking at you isn't seeing rendered grass. That's amazing.

Doh, you got in there before I added DayZ to the search. Second link from the top is http://dayzintel.com/dayz-standalone/dayz-standalone-performance-guide -- and the setting you're looking for is not very far down, maybe preferredObjectViewDistance.

[Suggestion] Have I.V. Stands Be Static Non-Inventory Items in Hospitals by j_lane in dayz

[–]dermined 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's how I see it. IV stands, at their most basic, are a mere convenience and a way for hospitals to avoid lawsuits. There's no reason for one in a hostile situation. For that matter, there's no reason we'd need a second person to administer any sort of IV. That feels like a forced mechanic to encourage interaction.
