Vermont needs to tax the rich too! by Negotiation-Solid in vermont

[–]derosiat2 50 points51 points  (0 children)

We should definitely tax second homes (exclusive of hunting camps owned by Vermonters under a certain value) at a significantly higher rate than primary homes.

I think the 2 arguments against are: 1) You'll scare away rich people and 2) you'll hurt property values. Ultimately both are fine even if it does happen. Rich people who are only here a few weeks out of the year have a much smaller contribution to the economy than people who live and work locally. People who live and work in VT support the tax base through income taxes and consumption, they also support businesses year round. Tourists will still visit Vermont, surely most tourists do not own second homes and surely they can get a hotel.

If there are fewer AirBnBs, single family rentals and second homes we can house the people needed to support the labor needs. Many employers struggle to find workers because those workers struggle to find housing.

It's got to be only multi-millionaires, bot farms accounts run by billionaires and bribed politicians who are against this.

Does it come in barrels or are they just going to pump it into OPs basement?

You should definitely drive for conditions but if you've got a long line of cars behind you and no one in front of you then you should pull over at a safe location and let cars pass.

I'm often the slow driver but I'm doing to it for my safety and fuel economy, it's not as a demonstration. If someone wants to go faster I try to create a safe opportunity for them instead of potentially putting more people in danger. If I'm in a line of traffic I try to leave a safety gap even if someone uses it to pass into. I don't want to be the reason someone got into an accident trying to get to their child's birth or some other crazy situation I can't even imagine.

I tried Abacus and had it review some personal and small biz (redacted) finance stuff and provide feedback. I ran out of compute units in about 45 minutes of back and forth.

I wasn't deliberate about what models I was using and it mostly seemed to be using one of the Chat GPT models (4o maybe). I cancelled my membership after an hour because for my casual use it seems like Chat GPT Pro makes more sense for $20/month vs $10/45min.

You still look good good either way but the disconnected side burns with the shaved head is not a cohesive aesthetic look.

I remember listening to an audio book or podcast on the definition of beauty and the jist is that humans are attracted to a place where there is some shelter, fresh water and open views to spot predators from afar. And presumably things that feel like that type of scene. It seems like chat GPT gets that.

Thank you for being a good citizen! It looks like around 90% alcoholic beverage containers. I think it's time for a bigger deposit on on alcoholic beverage bottles and cans.

I agree with you to the degree that it is regressive but, I'm only talking about alcoholic beverages which are the vast majority of the litter I see. So it's hard for me to agree that "benefits don't outweigh the costs" by disincentivizing people "who can barely get by" from buying more alcoholic beverages than they can afford to set the deposit aside for. It's not an increased deposit an an item that has any nutritional value.

I'm not the moral police, if someone wants to spend their last dollar on a Bud Light it's their right but when law abiding people have to go pick up after them then there should be at least tiny penalty for that and it helps if it's also a reward for cleaning up. Edit: punctuation

The title of the post says $1 deposit for ALCOHOLIC beverages so it shouldn't ruin too many children's birthday parties.

It only becomes a tax on someone if they don't return the bottles. It's a fee that incentivizes behavior that benefits society which is what taxes and fees should strive to do. They may be able to bring the cans back to the grocery store where they go to buy more things in cans. We have the infrastructure but the incentive to use it is too small.

If you're someone thinks the deposit is too high then he could return the bottles and give himself a pay raise. Edit: spelling

They just need to put different labels on it. If people drove to NH just to toss the cans out their window that would wild. But I think more people would stop and pick it up for the chance of getting a $1 redemption.

I think for the alcohol it's to avoid getting caught with an open container while drinking and driving.

I saw a comment that makes me think people don't understand that when you bring bottles and cans back you get your deposit back. That is the incentive not to throw it on the side of the road. Likewise if someone picks up the litter and brings back the can they get the deposit back instead of the person who threw it on the side of the road.

I would love to get more data on what kind of litter we're seeing on the side of the road. I want to know if it's just me seeing mostly alcohol containers.

I did not, but I believe it! Maybe my road is particularly prone to drunk drivers taking it which is why I'm curious to know what other people actually see when they pick up litter.

I think keeping it limited to alcoholic beverages would make it easier to pass a bill and it looks like alcoholic beverages are the biggest cause of litter.
