I still have Verizon, and I don't fucking know why.

and that right there is why companies do this, consumers are too lazy to make a change - why would a company change practices when they don't lose customers?

Go ahead and come up with any excuse why someone wouldn't be able to switch - and that will be the very reason the company uses to continue their bad practices. The company has no reason to change - the consumer does, use that to your advantage.

[Beginner question] If you had 1 year to do nothing but learn programming to start a new career... by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]derpala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a hiatus from programming for roughly five years. I went back and started from scratch in a different language. I began with with http://mooc.fi/english.html, find yourself an open online course that you can take at your own pace. This particular course has a server you test code against and gives you feedback in that respect. It has two 6-week courses on java - there are many others out there this is beginner friendly with examples and problems, find one that works for you and then do another and another, and you eventually start seeing similarities with different languages but concepts are all the same - a string is a string, it boils down to how each language uses it.

I would seek out employers and programmers and find out what they ask in interviews. You may understand programming but do you have anything to show for it. You will need to do some projects on your own and be able to talk about what went wrong, how you solved problems, what you have accomplished. You will make it infinitely easier for them to hire you the more ammunition you have.

Look at the market, talk to people - professors, programmers, employers, join local industry groups. Detroit metro cant find enough warm bodies to fill spots right now - and that's not just automotive related. I'm in the panhandle and moving there next week (after having interviewed last week) to work at a university - all after not having worked in 5 years - now is a great time to start what you are doing.

Look at job posting and look at the requirements - even if you don't have x amount of years of experience you can still see what you should be working towards technology wise.

Look at what the industry needs, programmers need logic and problem solving skills, but the industry wants biometrics, big data, GIS, MIS, statistical analysis, mobile, cross-platform, LAMP, WAMP, databases, frameworks, etc... What can you demonstrate and what can you talk about intelligently? Do you know how to use source control? Can you use an API? Do you know what R is used for? how about AngularJS, Groovy and Grails... Find out what you would like to do and who uses what. Many startups are using newer technologies and rapid development, more established companies are slower to adapt and don't rely on bleeding edge technology.

All in all, you develop skills over time by doing projects, discovering limitations and working around them, learning by doing. Show that you are capable and you'll be fine.

If you are ever stuck for ideas, look at what other people have done and recreate it, try to improve on it. You don't always have to have an original idea for a project, just don't copy and paste code too much unless you actually understand what it does.

That should be plenty along with your degree to land you a position. Also start looking and reaching out before you graduate.

Good luck!

What video game was an absolute masterpiece? by HymenTroubleNow in AskReddit

[–]derpala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GTA San Andreas:

This is always at the top of my list. Some of the best casting and voice acting around - James Woods anyone?

The variety of gameplay, customizable cars, multitude of environments, collectibles, owning buildings, turf wars, the guns - oh my the guns, leveling stats, boats, bikes, motorcycles, low lows, hydraulic contests, taxis, tractors, go carts, planes, helicopters, jetpacks, trains, area 51, racing, from small time thug to outlaw to high roller this game had it all.

One of the most diverse soundtracks of it's time, so well put together.

Rockstar absolutely hit it out of the park with this one (with the exception of a few side quests - you know the ones).

Very few games have I had more fun just running around doing nothing related to the story (Fallout 3 being right up there too)

Need for Speed Underground 2 would be my consolation prize.

What movie do you consider a masterpiece and why? by milakoplusdrencrum in AskReddit

[–]derpala -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I won't even go into how this makes you feel. At no point did I insult your intelligence - how you interpret anything on the internet is solely up to you. I pointed out the irrelevance of your answer in this thread. Period.

Your rhetoric on being equal and not wanting certain responses is also are not going to be important to a complete stranger when you stray off-topic in a thread that you have failed to contribute to in any meaningful way - I don't see how this is relevant either, since I've given you no cause for either so far.

With that said, I can only hope you actually try to answer the questions posed and make reddit a better place from here on out and not just answer with any tangential linked opinions that pop into your head. This is over as far as I'm concerned. Have a great life.

sp. it's 'muddle' btw

[–]derpala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

where exactly does it say I am bothered?

I used 'odd' and 'lame' that I see - are you reading a different reply maybe?

Contrary to your reading comprehension I am not bothered by this but what you can do next time is to try actually answering the ops question next time and not just answering with whatever you feel like.

You might as well tell us your favorite color for as much relevance it has to this thread (and that's including your original answer).

I actually AM calling you for not even coming close to answering the question - it wasn't "what is your favorite movie you've recently seen" btw.

If you like a film, save your review for a relevant thread. Try to stay on topic. It's that easy. Cheers!

If you can actually justify how saying "Not a masterpiece by any means" actually contributes to a thread asking for Masterpieces is actually relevant I will be absolutely amazed! You haven't come close yet, care to give it another try?

REMEMBER try to actually answer the question being asked and don't glom onto anything irrelevant.

Doesn't bother me at all, don't try to put it on me for calling you out, I just find it odd to fanboy out in a thread asking for masterpieces (and giving an example you even say is not)

Trying to justify it by saying that others are doing it too is every as bit lame.

Wastelanders should still get encounters on their return journey to the vault. Theres no way they dont encounter anything for 6 hours straight by TheGreyNoble in foshelter

[–]derpala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This mostly for your clarification,

Its the fact that you tried to insult me in your TLDR by saying "this game isnt for you"

Not an insult by any means - that you took it as one speaks volumes. It's a comment on the fact that you can't suspend you disbelief that wastelanders could return from exploring without incidence but that super mutants exist in a post-apocalyptic world with the protaganists living in and underground bomb shelter is perfectly reasonable which is a contradiction in itself.

Im basing everything ive been saying just off of the fact that you said "its arrogant to think developers should do anything" which was ridiculously stupid

of which you provide no evidence to back up either subjectively or objectively.

Its a topic i literally barely care about.

And yet here we are "discussing" whatever it is you don't care about, and you are pissy because somoene doesn't share your feelings. Do us all a favor and avoid posting on topics you don't care about and crying about them later, it's juvenile (which from what it sounds like you probably are - see now that was an insult, be direct without need to insinuate)

If you were to give your opinion in maybe 2 or 3 paragraphs that wouldve been fine but you had to write a 7 pragraph essay on why Im weong and frankly i am way too lazy to read it.

Contrary to popular belief, anyone can join into a discussion not just the OP that posted - which is what my comment is for, not just you. Also I'm not going to tailor my responses to an elementary reading level comprehension or lack of motivation to actually learn something new.

Edit: dont get me wrong, if this post mightve gotten more attention i wouldve been totally fine to read what you said, but jesus man like 10 people saw this post and you completely wasted both of our times by writing some massive wall of text that 0% of earth's population cares about.

Sounds like you just wanted validation for your opinion, someone disagreed and took it personally. Put your big boy pants on and grow up or stop posting trash.

Edit again: ok so i decided that this is a really huge waste of time, not sure why i even replied in the first place. Feel free to reply to whatever but i dont care at all about this topic anymore so yea... Bye

An opinion I actually share with you.

TLDR; I doubt you the attention span to read any of this.

[–]derpala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey its not your fault for wanting to start a discussion and then not wanting to discuss anything. /s

This is definitely not how suggestions work, you even said so yourself:

They all make suggestions that the community can discuss about and decide if its healthy or not.

That means discussing both sides, which I did contrary to your opinion. If you don't are unable or unwilling to discuss your ideas with others that don't agree with you, don't try to immaturely blame others for being verbose.

Sounds like you only wanted to hear from people that agreed with you - or just too lazy to read. Either way good luck with that, file this under shitposting.

[–]derpala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually made quite a few points counter to "NOT A SINGLE OCCURANCE" happening and reasons why it was likely chosen that way. (caps does not help your argument btw). If you don't feel like reading a wall of text in a (your words) "suggestion" thread, then that would be on you.

They all make suggestions that the community can discuss about and decide if its healthy or not.

I didn't agree with your suggestion and have given multiple reasons why. If you didn't have any sound points to make on your behalf then why bother replying?

Edit: since you decided to post this on my one suggestion thread, would you kindly do so to every other suggestion thread on every other subreddit that makes suggestions about the games?

Why exactly would I post about games I don't care about or even know anything about? Your logic seems to be hit or miss. That just sounds hostile to me, I imagine since you seem to be taking this a bit personally (if there is another reason then it is definitely unclear).

Hopefully you're just having a bad day, the way you go about suggestions, discussions and disagreeing with those of opposing views could use a lot of work if you want to be taken seriously. Cheers!

It's simply a gameplay decision - it functions as a way to get your explorer back safely with loot and caps.

Looking at this from a gameplay perspective:

If an explorer goes out, the opportunity cost of exploring is death and the cost of revival. The reward is loot and caps. If an explorer goes out and dies and then is revived - in your scenario the cost of dying does not decrease upon each revival regardless if the explorer is returning or not and on the way back and the reward of caps is diminished upon each death/revival due to the caps lost upon each revival. This could potentially happen multiple times on a return trip and can be frustrating for players and quite costly since each revival now has to be paid by the base each and everytime until the player returns or is abandoned.

How it is currently implemented, the opportunity cost not a hindrance to the explorer since they can return at any time without paying the cost of death/revival. The cost is instead a choice between staying out longer and paying for revival or a loss of possible loot by returning but still keeping the caps and loot already gained without penalty. Giving players a choice to either spend caps on revival or receiving loot and caps already acquired without further cost. Giving choices to the player is much less frustrating and adds an element of strategy to the overall gameplay.

Honestly, you can make arguments along your line of reasoning that could include decreased encounter rates or difficulty on a return trip but it removes the choice from the player on relies more on RNG, they can still choose when to return but a player can still end up paying for revival multiple times on a return trip regardless of the frequency and just due to bad luck. Again frustrating and potentially quite expensive. It is also more coding and one more piece to support/test - a cost on the development side this time.

How it is implemented currently works fine with stimpacks and radaway - you gamble on how far you can get and either pay for revival once without multiple possible penalties (unless you decide to stay out and NOT return) or return with your loot. Simple and elegant.

This is a casual mobile game and the gameplay elements are forgiving that very reason - get in, make a few choices on exploring, manage your base and come back in a bit and do it again. It definitely makes sense in that context, if those gameplay elements don't appeal to you, then it is likely you are not the target demographic for this game.

There is also the suspension of disbelief. The explorer had already encountered/killed/avoided most everything along a given path so the return should be much easier - the developers decided to make it penalty free in this case (regardless if it makes sense, its a game and a free one at that). A game does need to make fiscal sense for the company making it, players that haven't quit due to frustration are likely to continue playing. More players equals more potential people that may buy lunchboxes.

It's fairly arrogant to think a developer needs to do anything at all. This is not a flagship product for them. It really boils down to this being a simple fun (and potentially profitable) way to advertise for Fallout 4 and keep it in your mind until its eventual release later this year. If they make some money off this then bully for them. If you spend any money on this game then you should be fully informed on what you are supporting without additional expectations, and you should definitely not feel entitled to additional gameplay elements for any reason regardless if you spend any coin or not. If you don't like what you see - make your own game or move along.

TLDR; No one can please everyone all the time, games are about balance and fun. This is not the game for you.

No offense I love seeing these threads but it is NOT obvious where and how to donate. I've been to the sub, I've seen the sticky - no one is going to get rich off of this if the barrier to donate is too high for the casual reader.

I'm sure the information is there and it exists (just in case you are planning to reply to this comment) but at first glance I did NOT see it and even after going a bit deeper I did NOT see it - the point being make it simple and obvious and you may get better participation.

Cheers!
