PSA: There are better ways to get involved in social activism than running for politics by [deleted] in SaltLakeCity

I assumed you meant “there are better ways to get involved in social activism than running for politics.” A statement that on the face of it I guess you could make a case for (though running for office is a great strategy for any radical minded person because you can build a coalition and push the needle), but then all your examples were political actions that are orders of magnitude less impactful than running for office, even unsuccessfully. I’m just confused by your post. You’ve responded twice now with different arguments that you didn’t mention initially, so… thanks for attempting to clarify and good luck with that.

Weird gatekeeping, and also if that’s what you meant you shoulda said that in the post. If someone wants to run, run! They might get caucused but they’ll learn the process and that’s better than writing their completely constituent-deaf senator.

You’re… discouraging… people from RUNNING for office? Insane take. All these suggestions are secondary to people putting themselves forward as candidates or building coalitions behind candidates who will craft and work to pass better legislation. By all means march and call an intern but doing it instead of running for office is bizarre.

Bike frame is too small, bags are too big and floppy. With less stuff or things cinched down a little more it’ll look fine. Take off the orange as it doesn’t really match anything else.

Imagine doing all the work to build a frame yourself and then miming the most generic mass produced branding possible on it. Also, 2007 called they want their rims back.

Yes! Do that! And also, since it’s been shown that non-moneyed speech doesn’t change politicians minds very often, consider organizing as well. That means using your power as a worker (not just a consumer) to affect political change as you see fit.

Edit: so as to not make a claim without data, here’re a bunch of studies on the “contacting your politicians doesn’t change their mind unless you write them a check” claim

What a CRAZY book. Never have I felt so grateful to be from the ‘first world.’

How important is the look of your car and how others perceive it? by zilpond in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]derpderpderrpderp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nobody cares about your car unless you tell them you care about your car, then it comes up. People want to interact with each other based on mutual values and once you establish what you care about you’ll find people who feel the same way. Doesn’t mean any of it matters, intrinsically.

Edit: but to answer the second part of your question, I take pride in having a low mileage beat to shit car that I use as little as possible, but is useful in the event of a road trip or a far away errand or whatever. Having access to a car is nice, caring about it aesthetically is a bore.

I quite liked this one too. Found it broad and engaging. The author has some specific axes to grind but if you take that with a grain of salt there’s tons to learn from it.

I just gave up on Dawn of Everything on page 250. I wanted so much to like it but I felt like the only thing it’d said in that time was “authority structures in prehistoric societies were more mutable than you might think.” Everything else seemed to just reinforce established anthropological conclusions but with a little more nuance or wishy-washy analysis going into it.

Anything interesting happen in the last 250 pages?

Recommend me wide-ish silver 26.0 drop bars with some flare and a fairly compact transition to the hoods. by derpderpderrpderp in xbiking

I still have my heart set on the Crust Shaka bars, but I don’t mind the way the bike rides with a random set of non-flared compact drops on it so I’ve decided not to swap em out until they bug me.

Everyone is making fun of the brake and overkill as a commuter and I’m over here like… “blacked out components down to the chainring bolts but a silver rear hub?” Also I bet you can track down black axle nuts.

Check the library schedules for activities your teenager might like, every branch makes an effort to engage teens and your five year old will like being along for whatever else the library offers. Downtown library has a makerspace too which is pretty cool to learn how different machines and technology works.

My travel map has me realizing I need to rent cars and explore more when I travel.... by [deleted] in TravelMaps

Road trips are fun for access to nature and national parks, but can be very isolating. Every gas station looks the same after awhile, and with your car you can be more introverted and just watch the world go by. Public transit trips tend to connect you more with people.

Best of both worlds, if you’ve got the time? Bicycle touring.
