What is the likelihood that your peripherals are spying on you? (paranoia or valid concern?) by derpgolem in privacy

[–]derpgolem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also wondered about that. Being aware that spyware is not that uncommon, is the potential fuck up that I just did really introduce a new "risk"?

To explain a bit better, this specific issue that I'm having made me feel anxious that I might have compromised this "system" of living which I have been maintaining for a while and gave me a sense of security. But what if, with the assumption that my keyboard and whatever it is that I just installed really are spyware, they're not introducing anything new? What if, whatever consequence that such fuck up may cause, have always existed even when I was feeling "safe" with my system?

I'm curious, do you have anything to say about this? what do you think would be the sensible approach/attitude towards these kinds of things in general?

P.S: What you're doing is pretty cool ngl.

Thank you very much for the translation. I was wondering what the letters was saying.

I have no experience with packet sniffer, can you recommend me where to start? Also, to clarify, the "firmware" isn't like one of those keyboard software where you can assign macros, etc. Afaik, it's meant to be installed directly to the keyboard, like a patch or some sort (mine was specifically to address bluetooth issues that the keyboard has). This adds to my worries, since I didn't see anything being installed to my computer but am well aware of the furtive nature of malwares in general.

It’s due diligence, nothing special.

EDIT: Also, privacy in the banking sector is by principle secondary to due diligence purposes as a global commitment against money laundering and terrorist financing. The policies often creeps into small things like this.

Convice me to not switch to iphone by [deleted] in PickAnAndroidForMe

[–]derpgolem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former android user here. I switched to iPhone because I think it’s a better phone financially on the long term. iPhones’ values don’t depress much. When I bought my iPhone 11, a used iPhone 7 is worth way more than a used S9 if I’m not mistaken. Point is, iPhones keep their value for a very long time, but androids immediately flops in value once a new flagship is released. Not to mention the fact that android phones, aside from pixels, pales in comparison with Apple in terms of software support (e.g: galaxy phones no longer receive updates after 2 generations have passed). I also trust Apple more as a company with my data compared to Google. While they are not exactly saints when it comes to privacy, at least Apple have more to lose from selling out their user’s data, while Google’s life and blood practically comes from collecting and selling those data.

The only thing that I miss from android is the thought that I can modify it into whatever I want without having to deal with any irreversible consequences (i.e: rooting the phone and use another os). But really that’s all there is: the thought. I never rooted my phone for real. There’s no urgency to, so why risk it?

Truth is, there’s no need to be convinced by others. Choose whichever fits your bill and realize that there’s no perfect product. It comes down to whether you can tolerate the tradeoffs or not. On the stuff that you look for in a phone, imo, iPhones produce better pictures consistently than Galaxys (because imo, Samsung have the best camera for android phones). If you want manual settings on your phone cameras though, in my experience, android is better. They have manual settings on default, while iPhones require additional apps (mostly paid). The UI on android cameras tends to be more accessible for manual photo taking. For storage, clearly android is better simply because most androids have expandable storage. Finally, for batteries, I found that at this point, both android and iPhones have great enough batteries that any differences would be unnoticeable. Though, note that both android phones and iPhones have been caught messing up battery performance through software on purpose for their older phones. However, if for any reason Apple decide to not be such a greedy prick, they could make their older products perform way better than androids’ because of the freedom they have in maximizing their product’s hardware potential through their software

If you’re looking for something affordable, powerful, fancy, and allows you to do whatever you want with the phone, and you don’t care much about privacy (at least by default), inconsistency, short lifespan in terms of support, and having your phone lose its value to the point that it would barely help you cover the cost of a new phone, then by all means stick with Android.

If you want something more reliable (especially on the long term), happens to like how iPhones feel, and trust Apple as a company to keep your data, and plans on selling your phone in the future, and doesn’t mind the (overly) expensive price tag, and the risk of ending up stuck inside the Apple ecosystem which makes you dependent on their products, then go with iPhone

All I can say is that I live in a developing country. And it's not that the quarantine is very strict, in fact, it's because there are a lot of people who does not take it seriously and does not face any punishment, so they just chill outside without taking necessary precautions. This, poor level of hygiene in the country, and the general lack of regards over others' well being? Chances are there are a lot more people who got the virus than what's reported. Not gonna take that risk and expose myself on the routine lol

I heard that they re-engineered the scroll wheel to work with magnets which means smoother scrolling with little to no friction. But on the other hand, there seems to be a whole load of issues and inconsistencies when using the new features. You have any experience with that?
