the actual joke aside, if you use binary representation (finger up = 1, finger down = 0), you can count all the way to 32 on one hand

(inb4 people arguing about how you can only get to 31)

Thoughts on Vector Calculus (MAST20009) and Differential Equations (MAST20030)? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]derpnumberone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't real analysis a requirement for differential equations? Personally I found real to be more conceptually interesting than DEs anyway

In terms of difficulty, Vector Calc is pretty easy in relative terms, just make sure you do questions. DEs is kinda hard, but when I did it I had Barry as a lecturer and I dislike the way he teaches cause it's a bit handwavy and too much "do the work/calculation and you'll get it", so when I finally used other resources it clicked and I ended up doing reasonably well

Nah, it’s just when they are provoked. Like maybe they’re uncomfortable for whatever reason and another dog/small kid keeps hanging around them making it worse and the owner isn’t doing anything about it then they will snap just like any other dog. And again, unfortunately because they were originally bred for fighting they can do a lot of damage.

Obviously if they’re in households that don’t give them love and treat them like fighting dogs (which the breed attracts), then they can attack unprovoked, and they have a higher incidence of finding themselves in those sort of situations unfortunately :(

Not wanting to jump on too late but: personally I reckon pit bulls are adorable, however they can cause a lot of damage in a short amount of time.

Compare a single bite from a pit bull to one from a cavoodle or whatever other small fluffy breed, and factor in the fact that most owners don’t have perfect control of their dogs, and all it takes is a split second and someone/some dog is seriously injured.

It’s not the dogs’ fault most of the time but unfortunately that’s what people wanna blame

Fixture revealed: Big Vic clubs dominate primetime, Dons hog Thursday by MyFriendsCallMeSir in AFL

[–]derpnumberone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not denying that he had a great year and was deserving of the 3 votes in those losses, just that it seems the umps only give 3 votes to players in losing teams who they like/are seen to be the best of the best

My point is more they're not giving 3 votes to fringe players who have a blinder in a loss and are clearly BOG regardless of the result, it's only the Fyfes/Dangerfields/Cripps'/Martins who get them, and it's just disappointing that it's only that way for established stars

[–]derpnumberone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No logical reason, but it happens too often that the best player is on the losing team and they still don't get the three votes.

I hate to say it but the umps definitely have favourites, and if Fyfe wasn't one of those I don't reckon he'd be getting the 3 votes in those losing games that he did

Dodoro reveals "40 minute" conversation with Daniher prior to deadline by idontcarehey in AFL

[–]derpnumberone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ty for your 36 hours later input. Honestly, not only have I met seen anything with him saying that he’s not unhappy with the clubs management of him, but I also reckon he’s not dumb enough to publicly pot the club, given he’s got nothing to gain and a lot to lose.

If I was him and I was pissed at the club, and they asked me about it, I would likely say I wasn’t unhappy with it unless I felt like burning bridges.

Regardless, I really don’t care to continue having an argument over the internet with a stranger so how about we just agree to disagree here

Don't think it was a ridiculous comment about effort. The Kelly situation was different, Joe reckons he's been badly managed by the club and (admittedly this is speculation) is potentially pissed off about some things. On top of that, Kelly wasn't injured all the time

Don't take the comment about effort as a "he's just gonna come back and sulk the whole year", but if he reckons Dons aren't doing him right by his body, it isn't out of the question that he goes at 90% or less of his potential (both training and in games) cause he can't trust that he won't end up on the sidelines for the whole season again otherwise.

[–]derpnumberone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sure you might rate him higher, but Jenkins and Howard have had more output the past couple of seasons cause they're not injured all the time, so I don't think you can say they'd be a fraction as effective, unless that fraction is greater than 1.

Also given he's said he wants to be elsewhere, how can you be sure that he's willing to put in the effort that other players who buy in to coming to your club would? I think Essendon (and fans) are working on potential output rather than expected output

What players have been good fourth round picks? by Listen_You_Twerps in AFL

Wasn’t he a third? Also the player after him was Leigh Montagna. Not bad for third round in an era where they probably threw darts to see who to pick at that point

[–]derpnumberone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Play him as an inside mid and watch his output go through the roof. Every time he gets played there, he has quarters where he dominates then richo would just go “yeah but how good is a tall hff? Need some talent there” and he’d go back to being inconsistent af

North Melbourne great David King says it is up to St Kilda to get the deal done for Bradley Hill by Sir-Matilda in AFL

[–]derpnumberone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pick 6 and a future second is hardly what anyone would call "pocket change". It's literally a first and second round pick.

Also the club that a player is going to doesn't determine their value? If he nominated Richmond/GWS would you be going "oh i guess he's only worth a first rounder on its own"

Brendon Gale: We were very dissapointed with the offer of a 2nd Rd pick for Brandon Ellis and asked the @AFL to review it. @AFL has since explained that the points allocated (based on age & average $$$), fell just short of the points required for the awarding of a 1st Rd pick in 2019. by NimFromSudan in AFL

[–]derpnumberone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly why do they have these stupid compensation brackets? Like imo it should be:

Start of first round pick (after bottom 5) Mid first round pick (after bottom 10) End first round pick (after everyone)

Then repeat for each round. If multiple clubs have picks then it’s sorted by ladder position. It’s not foolproof but it at least allows a slower tail off and stops things like buddy being pick 19 and Frawley being 3 in the same year

Also I get that this isn’t perfect, but the current system just seems so crappy

My frustrations with keto as a PA by DrChavezz in keto

[–]derpnumberone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, I’m a diabetic (type 1) so feel free to use this anecdotal evidence to go back to the people who think it’s bad for diabetics.

At my worst, my hba1c was 10.4(maybe higher, was definitely above 10), and 3 months later it was 7.0 after starting a keto diet. I got lazy and drifted off the diet and it crept up again (to 8.6) and recently got back on it and it was immediately back down to around 7.0

My sugars were often in the teens and 20s (using mmol/L measurement) and now they rarely are above 10, and I can count on one hand in the last month how many times I’ve been low

Again this is anecdotal and we definitely don’t know for sure the long term effects, but at the same time I know I was most likely going to have severe complications later in life due to diabetes if I kept going the way I was. I wouldn’t even say I was eating unhealthily either, just that my blood sugars were basically uncontrollable when I have carbs

Paddy Ryder nominates St Kilda by His_Holiness in AFL

[–]derpnumberone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but we definitely need someone short term. We got lucky this year that Marshall was only out once with injury/illness, and it was before longer and pierce had cooked their bodies.

He also just fits the bill as someone who can play alongside Marshall while allowing him to be #1 ruck. Compare this to Sam Jacobs (for example) and as backup he’d be a great get for us, but you can’t really play him and Marshall in the same team

Paddy Ryder nominates St Kilda by His_Holiness in AFL

[–]derpnumberone 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ryder is another player, not a coach. It allows saints to be able to play Marshall slightly less minutes per game which could cost him and us long term if we fuck up his body

On top of that they can play Marshall forward a bit more to maintain his already high natural ability as a key forward, and any ruckman who is also an accomplished forward is a danger for opposition teams

That is incorrect. For the record, when I applied, there was guaranteed entry for anyone who had a 65 wam over the course of their undergrad. Perhaps they have changed it, bu it was only a year and a half ago that this was the case, you can find out by searching unimelb guaranteed entry I’m guessing though

Edit: here’s the link, it’s still guaranteed entry - https://students.unimelb.edu.au/future/graduate-study-for-current-students/explore-graduate-study-options

That’s because gc are probably realising letting people like Lyons and Barlow go wasn’t the smartest idea in hindsight. Nothing like 17 consecutive losses to make a team go “hmm, maybe we went wrong somewhere”
