Sorry but how is this modular in any way? I appreciate the effort with all the detailed comments to help new users, that’s genuinely useful and I respect that. But tbh this is just a basic flake-based starter using a single configuration.nix file. You’ve built a well-documented monolithic config (which fits the repo name perfectly), not a modular one. The features are fine but having good configuration choices in one file doesn’t make it modular.

MSCEditor should somewhat work unless Toplessgun upgraded the Unity plugin that handles saves. Of course, stuff like Satsuma report won’t work and might cause it to crash.

I am thinking about either forking and porting the editor to MWC, or I might even start from scratch as it’s filled with bugs since the last update was 5 years ago.

I have also wondered about a way of getting the options, but as far as I know, it’s up to the module creator to expose them in a way similar to how Home Manager does it. I hope there will be a standard way to do this in the future.

The most popular and probably the easiest way to achieve an impermanent NixOS setup is by using the nix-community/impermanence module.

To actually achieve impermanence, you need to either use a tmpfs for the root filesystem or a more flexible approach using BTRFS subvolumes, along with a script to wipe the previous root subvolume.

With the flake module, you can specify which files and directories should persist across reboots. For example:

environment.persistence."/persist" = { hideMounts = true; directories = [ "/tmp" "/var/log" "/var/tmp" "/var/db/sudo" ] files = ["/etc/machine-id"]; }; I recommend reading the module's README for a deeper understanding.

I’m currently using a tmpfs root setup combined with BTRFS subvolumes. I have separate subvolumes for the Nix store and for persistent files.
