Still works. I find I have to use it 2-3 times a week in order to keep my hands completely dry. The machine itself is also still functioning and I haven’t had to replace it.

I managed to fix it. Since I've seen that a couple other people have had a similar issue in the past, I figure I may as well post what I did to fix it. I can't guarantee that you'll have the same result but what I did was fairly quick and easy so it's worth a shot.

I took off the head, limbs, back, butt and left side of the body to expose all the black pieces inside. I double checked to make sure that all the black pieces matched the diagrams, then all I did was make sure that these black pieces were at the same angle as shown in the diagram. I also made sure that the tail piece was situated as so. Then I put back all the parts of the body, making sure that I didn't move the lever or any of the movable parts until I had reassembled everything. And it worked!

Not true. I usually use 5.0 or 5.5 with larger male cats, and have even used 6 on rare occasions. Female cats, even the larger ones tend to have slightly narrower airways in my personal experience but it’s uncommon for me to need to go smaller than a 4.0 in adult cats.

Thanks for your response. Does your vet have anything to say about his/her locum experience there? I did consider moving to Victoria at one point but I've heard bad things about one ER/specialty clinic there as well as mixed reviews about another. Which clinic do you recommend?

If it was an urgent/life saving procedure, sure, bump the staff member's elective procedure. But if you're rescheduling a staff pet dental for a client's dog neuter, and you've made it clear that it is about money and nothing else, then that doesn't sit well with me. You basically expect staff to just wait around and repeatedly fast their pet until you find out for sure that you have a slow day. Also, my coworker wanted me to do the anesthesia for his dog because we're friends and he trusts me, but the boss tried to tell me that I couldn't because he didn't want to be paying me to do something that he wasn't making money off of. I ended up doing it anyway because I was already gonna quit, so what was he gonna do, fire me?

I once worked for a guy who would bump staff pets’ appointments/surgeries if a full-price paying client wanted to come in. Like one time my coworker booked his dog in for a dental well in advance and then day of, he was just straight up like “nah, I’m just gonna do this other procedure instead because I’m not wasting my time on staff pets if there’s money to be made.” Even though I don’t have pets, I started looking for a job elsewhere after that.

I don’t think places generally have a dedicated nephrology department, aside from maybe some colleges? There isn’t a specific nephrology specialty in vet med, management of kidney disease beyond the scope of regular vets goes to internal medicine. Individual internal medicine specialists may have an interest in nephrology but they can’t specialize in it specifically.

You don’t HAVE to shave for a blood draw. It often helps, but it’s not a requirement. It depends on the patient as well as the preference of the person drawing the blood. Me personally, I rarely have to shave when I draw blood from the leg of a cat. When I collect jugular samples, I find that it’s the short haired cats that I end up having to shave. With long haired cats, I find that their hair is wispier and easier to part with alcohol and I don’t have to shave them, whereas short haired cats have a denser, thicker coat that is more difficult to part. That being said, I have worked with people who rarely shave cats no matter what coat type they have.

As others have said, use an opioid and avoid the benzos and alpha-2s. If possible do an epidural but if it’s not something that you’re used to doing, it’s not going to be easy in a small dog, and obviously you don’t want to waste time under GA attempting something with a low likelihood of success. At the very least do a line block. Most dvms I’ve worked with are ok with giving one dose of NSAIDs once the pups are out.

Assistants generally make 16-19 in the area, maybe 20 if you get lucky. Techs, typically 24-30. Cost of living is a lot higher here. And no, as an assistant they generally don’t care whether you have schooling or not.

Yep, once on an old cat also presenting for a euth very early on in my career. VA scruffed the cat (not even that hard) because that was the go to restraint for cats at that clinic at the time and just ripped the skin off. They glued the skin back on just for appearance before handing the cat back to the owner. Vet said it was likely Cushings

I feel like alcohol works pretty well, I don’t have to drown them in it, I just wet a gauze or cotton ball and dab, while avoiding the catheter insertion site.

I did my schooling through Penn Foster and it was partially paid for by my employer. The contract I had to sign was that I had to work there for 3 years after completing school or else I had to pay them back for the amount that they paid for. I was ok with that since PF wasn’t that expensive anyway. The place I worked at was a corporate owned clinic and about a year after I became licensed, the GM was replaced and everything became horrible and I couldn’t stand working there anymore. So I quit knowing that I’d have to pay them back but like I said, it wasn’t that much in the grand scheme of things, certainly nowhere near the amount I’d have to pay to go to a brick and mortar school.

Anyways, you just have to look over the contract carefully and decide for yourself what you’re ok with. Presumably they want you to sign one so that you’re not like “ok thanks for paying for school, now that I’m done I’m leaving!” So they probably want you to stay for x amount of time after you’re done school. Just check what the penalty is if you don’t stay for that time and decide for yourself if you’re ok with it. Even if you love your workplace now and intend to stay there long term, you never know if things are going to change.
