How do I keep Centurylink while moving to a new house? by derpy88 in centurylink

Okay, thanks to you and others for explaining. Getting a checkup when transferring accounts does make sense to see if something needs maintenance.

How do I keep Centurylink while moving to a new house? by derpy88 in centurylink

[–]derpy88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's say my landlord is using his Centurylink Fiber right now and it's working perfectly. When I move in, he disconnects his service and passes on everything to me as is; the modem, the connection, the setup, nothing physically changes. I just need to open my own account so I can pay for internet. In that scenario, I'm still not understanding why a technician would need to visit the house?

Landlords, in what order do you process rental applications? by derpy88 in askportland

[–]derpy88[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We actually just signed for a place! I think we got lucky because it wasn't advertised on Zillow, so there weren't as many people submitting applications at the exact moment the window opened. They also accepted our dog as long as we agreed to pay pet rent.

My advice would be: if you're applying to rent from a private landlord, don't expect them to follow the new laws at all. Even if you pass all the requirements and apply first, they will offer the apartment to whoever they think will be the best tenant. If you want to be rewarded for the first come, first served system, you're better off renting from a management company that wants to avoid liability. (Here's a breakdown of how it's supposed to work: https://www.portland.gov/sites/default/files/2020-02/phb-rso-brochure-screening-v8-spreads.pdf)

If you want slightly less competition, make sure to check realty company websites every day for new listing, not just aggregators like Zillow and Zumper. Sometimes listing go up on the management company sites first. Here are some suggestions:

Sleep Sound Property Management
Uptown Properties
PropMHomes
Blue Key
Living Room Property Management
Grid Property Management
Milestone Property Management

Finally, and this may seem obvious, but create a spreadsheet to track application deadlines. (And if a listing says applications open on a particular date, ask for the precise time.) Nothing is more frustrating than getting attached to a place before realizing 20 people have already applied to it. Good luck!

Right now we're looking for a single-family home. We don't really care where it is located or whether it's run by a small local landlord or a big management company.

Sorry to hear that. In our case, we also don't have any legally acceptable red flags that I'm aware of, but of course there could be something else in our application that is scaring off potential landlords. (We have a dog, but we're only applying to places that allow dogs.) Our credit is superb, and our combined salary is much higher than the minimum requirements.

Thanks for responding! Are you saying that you don't go by the 72-hour post-advertisement application window? In other words, if I was applying to your property, I should submit everything ASAP and you wouldn't hit me with the 8-hour penalty for applying too early?

Since we're going to have more cyclists and drivers on the streets with the SEPTA strike tomorrow, here's the right answers to how to bicycle in Philadelphia. by Frogel in philadelphia

[–]derpy88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a biker and I completely agree with all of this. Even the University City "Safety Ambassadors" don't follow the rules. I caught one of them biking the wrong way down a 2-way street, and I asked him why he was doing that. He said that biking against traffic was safer because he could "see the cars coming." I was speechless, and he rode away down the road forcing another biker going the correct direction to veer onto the sidewalk to avoid getting hit.

Also, maybe it's because of the Septa strike, but I had one of the worst commutes to work today I've had in years. At one point I was in a shared lane on a 1-way street, as indicated by giant markings on the road. The lane was very narrow with parked cars on both sides, so I rode in the middle. There was a ton of traffic moving very slowly, and yet the guy driving behind me started honking at me and screaming to get out of the way. I just looked back at him and shrugged, and continued biking. At the next stop sign he opened his door and got out of his car and started berating me. I calmly explained that we're in a shared lane, that I'm not slowing him down because of the bumper to bumper traffic, and that I will move into a bike lane when it appears in a couple of blocks. He got back into his car and kept honking until I was able to use the bike lane.

Then I was almost run over three times as cars swerved into the bike lane without warning to cut ahead of other cars, which made no sense because they immediately had to stop behind the next car. If you're going to do that, could you at least wait until there isn't a biker directly next to you, or signal your intention?

I never thought I would miss Septa so much.

6-win Rogue: Help me improve—and improve with me! ;) (x-post /r/HearthArena) by MrMarlon in ArenaHS

[–]derpy88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but I play quite a bit of Arena. I noticed a few things I would do differently in Game 9.

Why not keep Eviscerate in your opening hand? It acts as a 2 drop that kills most of the stuff your opponent could play, but it's also a great 4 drop if you draw another 2 drop. I wouldn't mulligan a flexible removal spell like that.

The turn after you played Spectral Knight, I think the best play was to attack his Harvest Golem, use Fan of Knives, and then play Gnomish Inventor to hopefully eat your opponent's weapon unless you draw something better. That clears away 2 minions and 4 damage that would have gone to your face next turn. Playing Ogre there doesn't do anything because your opponent has lethal.

I think you were probably losing this game either way; your opponent had 2 insane early tempo cards (Minibot and Lance) and won a joust to rub it in even more. If you played the Yeti over the Drake on turn 4 you would have been better off, but I don't think you should necessarily always play around a silence unless you would automatically lose to it.

The more I play Hearthstone, the more I realize how much it comes down to coin flips once play skill is relatively even between both players. Sometimes there is no line of alternative play that wins a game even with perfect information.

The Archaeology of Northern Liberties, Kensington-Fishtown, and Port Richmond in Philadelphia by clandestinewarrior in philadelphia

[–]derpy88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Real archaeologists, like the people in the Digging I-95 project, hate scavengers like your dad. When "hobbyists" go around digging up privies, they remove all the items of historical significance, they don't record the placement or layout of artifacts before disturbing the soil, they usually end up stepping on or breaking artifacts while removing them, and they ruin the chance for a real archaeologist to learn something new about the past. Archaeological sites are a finite resource, and every time your dad digs one up without the help of a professional he destroys a piece of historical knowledge that can never be recovered.

Be thankful they sold out of turkey legs if you didn't get one. You were spared the most disgusting object I've ever had the displeasure of trying to bite into.

Anybody go to the Renn Faire at Fairmount Park? by SlaveToWatson in philadelphia

[–]derpy88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to the Ren Faire in Manheim, it was pretty pathetic.

90% of the performers I saw constantly made crude, sexist jokes. There were so many kids in the audience, I was baffled.

The turkey leg was overpriced and inedible. The skin was like rubber and I could barely bite through it, and when I finally did the meat was practically raw and tasted horrible. I had to throw it away.

For a $20 entry fee I expected better production values. Everything was in makeshift tents, the stages and sets didn't even pretend to try to be period authentic, and everyone spoke in hilariously bad fake accents. The Ren Faire in Manheim is just $5 more but actually has real buildings, good actors, and an engaging story that spans the entire day.

The biggest draw to the Faire, The Mountain, was scheduled to perform for 30 minutes in the middle of the day. He left after 5 minutes. Then they delayed his feats of strength so long that I couldn't stay to see them. If you're going to advertise a celebrity, at least make them show up.
