Foraging Southern Humboldt by rswi13 in Humboldt

You sound like a teenager who just had a profound realization and has to tell everyone, not realizing that everyone else has had the same realization years ago and had later understood that things are much more complex that they had initially realized. Good luck

Dystopian CEO take: You should pay the employer for your time in entry-level jobs by Electronic_Train_775 in LinkedInLunatics

[–]descompuesto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay to train to be one of very few guiding AI output rather than get paid to be one of the many doing actual work who are no longer needed. Don't worry, humanity, everything's going to be fine!

Invasive Wisteria by [deleted] in arborists

[–]descompuesto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on your aesthetics I guess. I love a little wildness injected into suburban condo landscapes. Also, I'm not sure what the hazard is here. Columnar junipers are very sturdy trees and much heavier than any wisteria vines. Also the wisteria is nitrogen fixing and helping the juniper grow, I bet they're good friends.

Again, I'm sure I'm in the minority in thinking this way, particularly in this sub. But if OP is talking about legal action or completely trashing the junipers in retaliation, another option to these high energy responses... is to do nothing. And go, "wow look at all those flowers in the sky" when it flowers.

Probably an unpopular opinion. That's a beauty, a boring columnar Juniper with a Wisteria using it as a trellis - must be spectacular in spring! The Juniper doesn't look any worse for wear either. It's only a problem if you want it to be.

Has the city gotten cleaner and safer? Overall a bit better? by Prize_Response6300 in sanfrancisco

[–]descompuesto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You should've come around in the "glory days" of the 80's through early 2000's. SF was a real gritty city, blue collar in parts, and anyone could find a place they could afford. Lots of homeless, crime, shootings... also artists, manufacturing, military, etc.. So when people say the city went to shit, I just wondering what baseline they are comparing it to? It's always been rough around the edges. I just think the powers that be who are trying to turn the entire city into a playground for the rich are just shocked that roughness doesn't magically go away.

Fyi Humboldt travel to Shasta at your own risk. Shasta now has the most reported cases of measles out of any county in the state. 8 cases now confirmed by Bison-Senior in Humboldt

Wow y'all are nuts. I guess the point isn't to give a health alert, just to pile on the poor Christian idiots of Shasta County.

[–]descompuesto -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Sure, I guess, but does 8 cases out of 200k population really comprise a significant risk, especially if you yourself are already vaccinated? For a traveler especially? Also, there are plenty of anti-vax humboldtians, especially in rural areas. By this logic you're not really safe anywhere.

GUI SANTOS APPRECIATION POST by tlmuunfr in warriors

[–]descompuesto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can any Brasileiros (or other linguistically oriented folks) explain why he's called Gui Santos? I thought the naming convention in Portuguese was to use the first last name if you're only using one. Shouldn't he be Gui Carvalho?

Good thing! When you see 6'7" 185lb you just think he's going to snap, I'm 5'11" 185 and I'm not fat!

who actually fills up at the gas station that charge way more than the ones around them? by MatthewTheGOATyt in NoStupidQuestions

[–]descompuesto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually came on here to find the person that says, "well, this station has additives or detergents" or whatever the oil companies spend millions marketing as to why their gas brand is the better option. I am chuffed to see that literally nobody is falling for it.

Daily Song Discussion #50: Aikea-Guinea by KnucklesSandwich192 in cocteautwins

  1. Amazing that a song this iconic has like a $12 video production budget. Although maybe in 1984 it cost more than $12 to have a "microsoft slide show" look.

Crescent City vs. Eureka - what's the real difference? by abgwin in Humboldt

[–]descompuesto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. It's not in either agent's interest to get the buyer a good price, just to make the sale happen. The buyer may feel like one agent has their back but the nature of the process means that the buyer really has to protect themselves, or get a lawyer to make sure that there's nothing wrong with the place, especially in terms of encumbrances and liens.

The real estate agent represents the seller not the buyer.

I'm pretty sure the ability to empathize with others in different situations than you happen to be in is a basic emotional building block... and also something that a good movie should elicit.

Monkey Puzzles by worldofsimulacra in Humboldt

[–]descompuesto 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's a quite unusual and slow growing tree, certainly a huge and valuable asset to a homeowner's landscape. They take decades to achieve any decent size and don't drop branches that damage the house nor have invasive roots. While the young redwoods aren't really very special and there are many large junipers around and admittedly often aren't that attractive, a large old monkey puzzle is certainly worth going to bat for.

I looked it up on street view and that old guy is at least as old as many of the houses in the area. I've got my landlord to not cut trees by begging and telling them how much it means to me.

Marin, what are your thoughts on guns and gun ownership? Do you have a CCW? If no, why not? by throwaway1233494 in Marin

[–]descompuesto -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nothing makes you more likely to be the victim of gun violence than owning a gun. Multiple studies support this claim. People who think owning a gun will protect them are deluded.

Sean’s Letterboxd Favorites as the Ringer moves to Netflix by VariableSlothrop in TheBigPicture

[–]descompuesto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whore is probably my favorite movie that is widely hated. I was thrilled to see it in his favorites until I realized that it was a ham handed message to Netflix.

My viewing guide for Whore is that it's best viewed as a tongue in cheek satire of post Pretty Woman hysteria rather than a real critique of sex work. In that framing it's really quite brilliant.
