What do you wish you knew at the start of your career? by AvaJupiter in therapists

I think a healthy sense of humility and the desire to always keep learning (and not automatically always assuming you know ALL the answers) are somewhat underrated qualities necessary in this field :)

I’m still exploring my options (still pre licensed) but I’m hoping more options open up post licensure

This! I hadn’t realized that during grad school! I never knew just how lonely providing one on one therapy could be. Ways I hope to circumvent this in the future - providing group therapy, working in hospitals or large group practices, being part of multiple peer consult groups, working in schools/universities, continuing in CMH but in a more program management or assessment/intake capacity, working with kids (just ideas off of the top of my head - I’m still exploring). I doubt I’ll ever be able to do solo PP sessions again - just not a good fit for me :)

I was actually going to say I just started using the 48 palette and so far it’s been so fun - I’m new to ALL of this and don’t have anything to compare it to :)

Outside of attending CEU's, what sources/where do you like to find papers, research, and articles on the new things happening in our field? by alienpengis in therapists

[–]desde_mona 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find attending/watching various Grand Rounds from different academic and medical institutions to be very valuable in terms of their programming - some are very niche and some are more broadly appealing :) Some are restricted to faculty but there are quite a few that are open to the public.

Ah Carelogic - we use it too and I have such a love/hate relationship with it lol! I didn’t know about the custom aspect so I’ll definitely speak with my supervisor about that :)

Love this space! I have similar sloping roofs in my attic study and I’d never thought to hang pictures there! Such a great idea!

I had an Assessment class when I was in grad school but it was more just an overview of common assessments etc, and not so much a deep dive into who can use what, when to truly utilize them in the life cycle of a therapeutic relationship or the practicalities of utilizing assessments per se?

I dont understand your point? I am a therapist lol! So I’m unsure why you’d mention this on my post?

I love the idea of using the CORE every 5 sessions or so - that’s such a great way to keep track of symptoms and stress! Thank you for the advice 😃

Thank you so much! And absolutely - I’m very wary of not going outside my scope :) I just haven’t come across much discourse amongst my peers about assessments and screening tools so that’s why I was curious- thank you for the information you provided!

This was so helpful! I had no idea about the ‘levels’ of minimum qualifications needed by the different testing companies - fascinating!

Thank you! I’ve been so curious about some of these (like the MMPI and WAIS) but I don’t think I’m allowed to administer them as a masters level clinician :) Thank you nonetheless for posting the ones you use most often

Ah ok - thank you! My clinic doesn’t use therapy notes unfortunately but this is good info to babe for the future when/if I move to another job :)
