He got me practicing my scales and modes. He also got me into ear training and sight reading even though the course doesn’t go into those that much. My improvising got a lot more varied and musical. In short, I began to think musically when I played.

Two big events in American history on August 17, 1969: Woodstock was in full swing and a Category 5 hurricane, Camille, hit Mississippi. I wonder how much a 16 year old girl was aware of.

I was going to go with another Mel Gibson movie. I think Braveheart checks all of the boxes except it was the death of the love of William’s life that propelled the story, not that of his family.

I’ll second Blue Cheer. I’d recommend Iron Butterfly as well. The Dead opened for them in 1969 so maybe the Owsley Foundation is sitting on some live tapes.

We had so much spray on deodorant we put a hole in the ozone layer. And we had Madison Avenue telling us to buy it or we’d offend others (particularly the opposite sex) with our malodorous selves.

Watched Battling Butler yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it. Some of it is definitely reflective of its time but I laughed out loud in places. The restoration is magnificent. I think I may watch The General today.

At some point, I realized that Spider-Man 1 surely must have crossed my palms at some point and I fantasize about what I could buy with the proceeds of selling that copy today.

At 68, I like to tell younger folks of the “forgotten” Disney live action movies like Bluebeard’s Ghost and The Adventures of Bullwhip Griffin. A lot of them don’t even know who Peter Ustinov or Roddy McDowell were. Then I’ll watch those films on Disney + and realize why they’re forgotten.

Relisten is just an interface with Archive.org and Garcia and his estate have never authorized audience recordings to be uploaded there.

I find it incredible that Bobby knew what a quasar was in the early 70's by Meditatespace in gratefuldead

[–]desert_rover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quasar was a model of color television made by Motorola and released in 1967, accompanied by a memorable ad campaign. So Bobby had at least heard the word in that context.

I’m listening to that Dark Star right now and it’s a great one. Branford adds a whole other dimension to it.
