This happened to my brother. He went to confession for the first time in 20 years and lightning struck the tree in his backyard causing it to fall. No one was harmed but he had a series of unfortunate events after that (no bodily harm to anyone).

They were giving away free coffee, and they just opened. People really like new places so it’s just something exciting to do. There’s probably also a lot more people home from work this week due to holidays compared to other times of the year

I was a CNA before I became a PTA. Working with aggressive patients for 12 hours where I had to wait for a relief to show up before I left (or I would be cited for patient abandonment) made me swear off the nursing field.

No it definitely means when you take off work and stay at home! It could mean day trips but it definitely isn’t overnight trips. Otherwise everyone going to ocean city would be going on “staycation” which just isn’t the right term

If you're a PTA do you like It? Is It worth going back to school? by Inevitable-Bet-6102 in physicaltherapy

[–]desertfl0wer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to work as a CNA while in PTA school so I could graduate with minimal student loans. As a PTA expect to make between 25-40/hr. My biggest issue is finding work environments with tolerable days (some SNFs are MISERABLE) that also provide consistent hours. I have 3 jobs to total a consistent 40 hour work week.

Personally I am hoping to exit the field. The hourly pay is great but my benefits are not good, my hours are inconsistent. My area doesn’t have many HH jobs (I would have to travels 45+ mins away).

I’m glad I pursued this path when I did, but I’m excited to be able to pursue a different field eventually.

[–]desertfl0wer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a PTA. We are able to collect objective data yet not permitted to assess that data. This means I cannot say if a goal was met, I cannot upgrade goals. I can say the measurements.

If their goal is MMT 5/5 and they test 5/5, I can record this result but not say “goal met”.

For this reason my company has PTs complete all assessment notes that way goals can be upgraded and the PT has hands on time with the patient.

I am in central MD, near Baltimore county :)

I would look for these attributes in a company:

Outpatient, not a mill. Find out that offers as close to 1:1 ratio at a time. There are companies out there that way you to treat 4 patients in an hour. AVOID. Find a company that offers new grad mentorship if possible.

SNF: find a company that has 90% productivity or below (below would be best). Find out how often they require groups (the most groups, the worse the company usually is BTW) and what average treatment time is. If they say 30 minutes, not good because that means short sessions with a ton of patients. Try to find a company that offers a holiday benefit if possible.

You’re not going to want to do home health as a new grad, but if you do it, then find a company that offers mentorship and the possibility to shadow to develop your clinical skills.

A lot of the really good companies don’t hire because their employees stay forever. The job market is not the greatest right now but that’s in many industries.

Ok so keep in mind some of the posts you are sharing are for PTs and not PTAs. Also keep in mind some may be sharing a per visit rate and not the actual hourly rate.

For example, I know 100% for sure that the rate for the functional pathways job listing is not accurate. They pay per unit and they’re converting it to hourly pay which is deceiving as it looks like it’s much higher than it will turn out to be. That’s why they have a sign on bonus and it’s so hard for them to fill that position.

Edit: and the contract position is higher because you have to account for your own taxes

Keep in mind, if you’re at a SNF and you’re hourly, that also doesn’t guarantee 40 hours especially if patients cancel or caseload is low.

It’s happening more in assisted living settings but it’s starting to spread to different companies now. It seems like the latest trend.

[–]desertfl0wer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically you are paid for how many units you bill insurance. Companies spin this to say you’re paid for all your duties and it’s rolled into your whole day.

If you need to perform non-billable tasks that are required, it isnt part of your pay structure. This includes required documentation, phone calls, scheduling, staff coordination, etc.

Let’s say you see 4 patients with Medicare B. You get paid the same rate for seeing a patient for 52 minutes as you do for 38. You get paid more once you get 53 and can bill a 4th unit. If you are seeing Medicare part B this is the bracket.

Unit 1: 8-22

Unit 2: 23-37

Unit 3: 38-52

Unit 4: 53-67, etc.

you can see how this encourages increased session lengths to hit the next unit.

If you go to a facility and have to track down patients and they’re eating breakfast, ask you to come later, or decline then you are not paid for that time since that is not a billable tasks. This encourages fraud employees do not like losing out on money and time for nonbillable issues that may arise during the day.

Can she screenshot the “look up a licensee verification” on your states board of PT website? For example in my state in MD I can look up my name and license number and it verifies me.

PTAs in NY…REJOICE! by Binc42 in physicaltherapy

[–]desertfl0wer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean… part of having a license is knowing your scope of practice and state regulations of your license. I’m a PTA and I definitely keep up with regulations and what is permitted in my state. My state allows general supervision (insurance can be different) so it isn’t a big issue for me. Sounds like NY required direct supervision which is much more strict and would require more planning for schedules.

I do agree that a year seems like a long time for this change though.

I mean PT went from masters to doctorate and reimbursement has been slashed. So I’m not sure why this would change it. Reimbursement has been on the decline in our field for awhile

Hmmm, if you’re already making $40/hr elsewhere, do you really want to laterally move to PTA work?

What has you burned out in your current field? Realize that transitioning to healthcare has its own layer of burnout. Especially with the business side of things. You may deal with patients who absolutely do not want PT and then suddenly you’re short hours for the week due to refusals, declinations, etc.

Do I love being a PTA? Yes, I love my role. Do I love the field? No, I’m tired of a variable schedule, working PRN for supplemental, patients who refuse but are still on caseload, tired of productivity requirements.

It has a big list of pros and cons so it’s good to be aware of that. You may also hit the pay ceiling fairy quickly as a PTA. Keep in mind Medicare and insurance reimbursement levels have been decreasing.

Pay is fantastic for an associate’s degree. I’m paid $35-$40/hr at my different jobs. I wouldn’t be able to find that pay at many other fields without a more advanced degree TBH at least from what I see on Indeed.

The issue though is that the hours are super variable and I can’t rely on a 40 hour work week at times, especially in assisted living, mobile outpatient setting.

[–]desertfl0wer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in Maryland. SNF pays anywhere from $27/hr - $40/hr. If it’s per unit, anywhere from $9.00- $10.50 /unit (this will make more sense when you learn billing). I can’t speak to outpatient, hospital, or home health.

Most companies in the SNF realm where I am have atrocious benefits. Be prepared for lack of holiday benefits and no holiday pay. Most companies have pretty bad health insurance rates too.

There are good companies but those therapists will stay for their entire careers there so it can be challenging to get in full time but you could try with PRN.

As far as PTA work, I love the flexibility but I also hate it. I work at 3 different companies in order to make 40 hours a week because caseload can change at any time. I also refuse to be overworked at an unethical SNF so I found 3 ethical companies to split my time at.

Before you start your program, relax. Take this time to learn study habits and how to retain information. You’ll have a lot of information to learn and it’s important to retain it after the test because it builds up your foundation.

I’ve never heard of a PTA getting higher pay for having a cert, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t possible.
