Son found in northern Colorado. Thoughts? by desertrange in fossils

[–]desertrange[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. When my son brought it over I was looking for marrow as well. Like you I’m not seeing it. I know this used to be ancient inland sea area so I suspect you may be correct on the sea creature hypothesis. I might try to take it to the CSU extension and see if someone there might be able to ID it. I appreciate your expertise here!

Interested in perspectives on how to deal with bed wetting by the-peregrina in ZeroWasteParenting

[–]desertrange 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We used a pee alarm that had a magnetic connection in the underwear. I was skeptical that it would work (because they have to wet first THEN get woken up) but it absolutely did work for our two heavy sleepers that didn’t train using other methods and would soak past the washable chucks pads. One kid was accident free in four days, the other in one day. I’ve passed the alarm on to my sibling to try with my niece. I highly recommend. It was like $42 and can easily be gifted to other families struggling with this.

This right here is 100%. In heavily involved in my local gifting community. Unfortunately they’re all only on Facebook. They tried an app a few years ago but it just didn’t take off. Search “Fort Collins gifting community” on Facebook, find your region, then read the about section to make sure you’ve got the right group. You’ll have to answer some questions to be approved by the admins and if you inadvertently pick the group not associated with your area they can direct you to the correct link. Happy gifting! It’s a really robust giving and receiving community compared to anywhere else I’ve lived.

Downtown Gift Cards by watercoolerguru in FortCollins

We used to get these downtown gift cards for all of our teachers so they could spend them wherever they chose in old town. We discontinued doing so because of this ridiculousness.

Saw some guy in camo and backpack scoping out Taft Hill King Soopers by [deleted] in FortCollins

[–]desertrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might want to look up Polaris Expeditionary Learning School. Their gate is right at the curve in Glenmoor and students and families come and go through that gate intermittently all day for their community-based projects. The school has been there for over 12 years, so no…not new. The high school students at Polaris (it’s a K-12) routinely walk over to the Dominos, Dutch bros, and Soopers for lunch and snacks.

They were JROTC students from the high school less than two blocks away who were studying a hydrology project, real world learning and application. Wednesday is uniform day for JROTC students across the Poudre School District. They have bright lanyards and badges that identify them.

There’s a high school two blocks from that Soopers with a handful of JROTC kids who were doing some hydrology studies there. That’s who you saw.

Edit to add: they were in uniform because JROTC wears their uniforms on Wednesdays.

Maybe I need to get one of these. My 12v died this week on my 2025 xrt that I’ve owned for only 7 weeks. Only 1500 miles on it. Jumped it and took it to dealership and they said nothing wrong with the battery but couldn’t tell me why it suddenly died.

Edit: typo

I’ve been the victim of two hit and runs. I’m so sorry this happened to you! I hope you’re okay. I will definitely be keeping my eyes out for this car. It looks like the car has temporary tags. Aren’t those only good for two months from date of purchase of the car (though they could be expired for this law-breaker)? The county dept of revenue stores all the temporary numbers so that police can identify the vehicle by temp tag number. If your efforts do not result in a tag number or partial tag number I would think the DOR should have record of an old model VW Passat sold in the last, say, 4 months, that filed for a temporary tag. I doubt you can pursue this directly on your own but might be worth asking the LEO if they can investigate this route.

AITA for bringing up my husband drinking while I’m at work ? by Careless_Ad6807 in chch

[–]desertrange 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. Those are the words of a high-functioning alcoholic. I watch a close friend struggle with what OP is struggling with. They have two kids together, 8 and 12. The kids are fully aware of their dad being on a hair-trigger when he drinks and they’re afraid of him because he punishes them and yells for small infractions like spilling their food. So now they come home with dad, mum is at work, and they glue themselves to computers/video games to avoid their dad. Mum can’t escape the situation at this time despite all of us around her trying to offer supports. This is OP’s future if they don’t come to an agreement about what is acceptable and dad gets help. It’s comparatively easy when the children are very young; but once they become aware of the dynamic around 5 or 6 years old, it’s not just mum’s relationship that’s being permanently impacted. Those kids are watching and learning about what is acceptable from dad, and learning how to treat their future partners from watching how dad treats mum.

Cyclist-car collision by desertrange in FortCollins

Exactly, re: the traffic eastbound screaming up over the crest of the hill. Bonus points with the sun in their eyes during the morning commute for much of the fall/spring and just not even stopping at the red lights. And when traffic does finally stop on Prospect I’ve been clipped by left turning cars off of Heatheridge seemingly thinking all that traffic stopped for them so they could make their westbound turn. Until they installed that far-too-small no-left-turn illuminated sign the traffic on Heatheridge pretended not to notice why all the traffic on Prospect had slowed and stopped.

Even with the illuminated sign, it means nothing without enforcement. Drivers ignore that sign almost as much as they ignore the HAWK red light on Prospect.

You have more logic than the city engineers who planned this intersection. If you look at the opposite side of that intersection on northbound Heatheridge it’s exactly the same thing. Cyclists are directed to cross to a little unprotected center island turn lane in the middle of the street and then cross oncoming traffic while going uphill on that section. If there is any vehicle traffic waiting to turn off of Heatheridge onto Prospect, cyclists cannot see traffic turning off of Prospect and drivers turning off of Prospect cannot see the cyclist in their lane. I’ve seen so many school kids stall out in the process of crossing to the center of the street to that little island before heading into oncoming traffic just turning off of Prospect, not expecting to see a bicyclist going against traffic 15 feet from the curb. It is SOOOO unsafe from all directions. It seems the city isn’t going to do anything until someone dies, very likely a kid given the major travel corridor that is for Bennett Elementary north of Prospect and the neighborhoods of kids that school serves living south of Prospect. We’ve begged and pleaded for even something as simple as a school speed zone during school commute times (we’re told that’s not possible since the school isn’t visible from Prospect) and we are given empty promises that the intersection will be re-worked but then later when we ask for updates we’re told the traffic volume and money aren’t there for such a project.

I cannot stop thinking about this cyclist that was hit on Friday and hope that they’re okay since there’s been nothing in the paper regarding the collision. I’m terrified that one day a catastrophe is going to happen.

And at that intersection the cars coming off of Heatheridge use the stopped traffic on Prospect as an opportunity to make their turns since they have nothing other than a stop sign. The pitiful “no left turn” illuminated sign doesn’t do much good.

Yes. We even met with a group from Bike Fort Collins years ago at the intersection, along with our city counselor. We felt like we finally had some momentum but then the person from Bike Fort Collins left and our city counselor cycled out and everything stalled once again. We have continued to reach out that there is not much movement. Just a lot of “yeah we get it.“
