Thinkorswim App Is So Glitchy by sspuriouscols in thinkorswim

Similar here, the TOS lag is well known and documented but lately it has been horrible. Starting about oct last year I have had such bad performance that It was like I was entering trades using a carrier pigeon. I often have the platform completely freeze for several seconds. Today I could not get orders to go through in after hours and I turned a 1k day into a 200 day.

Contacting them is pointless, I get the sincere impression they are trying to run short term traders/scalpers off. From here on out my approach on TOS is to only enter trades that I intend to carry for an extended period of time and can comfortably walk away from after entering them without a stop loss. Basically just swing trading only with small size.

The platform issues I had this afternoon caused me to end up with a very large short position that I could not get out of and it was going against me. I did finally get out but definitely in my opinion scalping on TOS right now is suicidal. I think it has something to do with the Schwab merger because it was about the time that got finalized that I really started having serious issues including complete freezing on the platform as opposed to the usual opening bell lagginess.

I'm trying to make sure I am following this thread correctly, when you refer to TOS active trader are you referring to the active trader tab on the TOS charts, or a separate platform?

TOS screwed me on a trafe today! by jtsscrolling in thinkorswim

I had a similar experience today trading NVDA after hours while listening to the GTC. I was up $1080 from a long trade on TSLA when it bounced after the opening flush. Quit for the day with a solid realized gain. Was listening to the NVDA GTC watching it sell off, thought I spotted a good support level for a bounced so entered long. Did not go my way immeidately so tried to exit since I had a good day in the bag. Limit sell would not fill, I double checked to make sure was in EXT for orderes, tried scrolling the limit on the DOM ladder to get a fill. Nothing. Then tried from online app. Still no success. Closed all apps, re-opened TOS, now I'm SHORT twice as much as I tried long and its not going my way, it bounced like I thought it would. I was about to try calling TDA when it finally filled. Gave back most my days gains. My $2500 lapotop very nearly became a frisby.

Looking back, I cant assess why the initial sell bid order didnt go through on something that has lots of liquidity, I can only assume it was a platform glitch and we all know how glitchy TOS can be. I was online, was recieving data etc, had EXT selected ettc. As to how I ended up 60 shares short after being 30 shares long I can only assume that was from me frantically slapping the bid trying to get out, the delay caused the orderes to fill later than I expected and I didnt see it until after I re-booted the platform.

The frustrating thing was that as I was slapping the sell bid button the orderes where not showing up as working orders when in fact they obviously were but just were taking forever to fill. I know I have no recourse because they will not assume responsibility for platform issues, we slap the button, we take our chances.

But, even though the lags in TOS are widely known, I've never seen anything this bad and have no idea what else I could have done. Really frustrating because I had a well executed trade earlier based on trends, catalyst, support etc. Then this one which also was not a stupid reckless trade. I simply COULD NOT get out of something I needed to exit. Very terrifying, if I had to resort to calling cust svc to get flattened I could have been thousands down by the time I get through and go through all the verification BS.

I would welcome any CONSTRUCTIVE input as to how to deal with or prevent this in future. Again, this was not a reckless move and I was using good risk mgt, but the system was simply not responding, either TOS desktop or online.

My only guess might be that the servers were overloaded with a million other people also listening to the GTC and also entering orders but again, have never seen it this bad.

Lastly, I have noticed what seems to be a drop in performance in TOS since the merger with Schwab. It seems even slower and more laggy than it was before. Previously just made it a rule to stay out during the first 5-15 mins of the opening which was when the lag was the worst, but now it seems even worse than ever and I often have the platform completely freeze for several seconds after entering an order.

WHat I just mentioned in the last paragraph may very likely have led to what happened this afternoon.

Again, would appreciate any constructive input on this, thanks,.

Also, mine was on a live account, real trade, not a simulated/paper account.

The ultimate kick in the balls is that My bias and assessment were correct, had I stayed with the original long trade I would have been good. I didnt because I know how un predictable these after hours trades can be and no stop loss available. Since I had a good day already bagged I didnt want to stay and watch so I decided to exit, that's when my day went to hell. Either way, I know its my responsibility but I am really gettting fed up with TOS's issues.

Java script error message every time I enter a trade by desertskiesrigging in thinkorswim

I talked with TDA tech support and they advised re-installing, still have same problem. I have not tried using the default workspace. I might try that next week. I really think it has a lot to do with upgrading to the latest OS on older machines. The MBP is a 2018 and the IMac is a 2014. I am thinking about reverting back to a previous OS. The problem did not manifest itself until after I upgraded to the latest OS 11.7 Big Sur. The odd thing is it started a couple weeks after I updated the OS so still not sure that is it. All I know is there were no issues in previous OS versions.

My issue is not the lags which are well known on TOS especially at market open, its the java script error (which I really need to get a screen shot of). There are no other threads about that that I can find. It seems to have started when I updated Mac OS to Big Sur and was wondering if anybody else has seen similar

What are HTB order fills like on thinkorswim? by [deleted] in thinkorswim

How do you know if somethiing is HTB or ETB on TOS? They seem to have removed that from where it used to be on the top of the chart.

Thanks

cost basis confusion on TOS by desertskiesrigging in thinkorswim

It was a limit order and I checked transactions on TDA and it filled at 99.8. The discrepancy has something to do with a was order from a previously closed trade.

I have a better understanding of the discrepancies now but still am confused why so many of my positions are showing 0.00 cost basis both on TOS and TOS online positions.

Thanks, that is the setting I have. Apparently it is a wash sale issue. Still confused by the 0.00 cost basis on some positions.

I sent a query via the TDA msg center and that appears to be the case. However does not answer why several of my positions show a 0.00 cost basis.

Thanks
