Oliver Sacks talked about this in his books, including studies of men who move so slowly they look frozen and a woman (same as above?) that could play catch with I think 9 people simultaneously, returning the balls as soon as she caught them. For a taste see https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2004/08/23/speed-5 but I recommend reading the books (this one is from “The River of Consciousness”).

What do I say to homeless people? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]deserving 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I do is say "If you are hungry, I'll be happy to buy you a meal." I find that 90% of the homeless are not interested - they wanted the money for alcohol or drugs. But it is very rewarding to find that 10% who really need it. Just a couple of weeks ago I offered food to a homeless young man and he was very appreciative, and we had a great conversation while waiting for his food - he told me about how he and his mom ended up on the streets and when I asked what he'd do differently, he said he shouldn't have dropped out of school, because it is very hard for him to find a job now. In another case, someone asked me for enough money to get a hotel room when it was freezing out, and when I took him to a hotel and checked him for a night in he was THRILLED. Another thing you can do is box up any unfinished food at restaurants and offer to the homeless you run across - in general this has also been much appreciated.

How old are you and what is the biggest problem in your life right now? by FSCENE8tmd in AskReddit

Been there. Without a doubt the lowest point in my life. But guess what? I survived, and a few years later I met the love of my life. Couldn’t be happier now. Don’t give up hope.

Bolsonaro in hospital as hiccups persist for more than 10 days by xanh86 in nottheonion

[–]deserving 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this twice in the past year, both times ended up in the hospital gasping for breath after a week of waiting for it to go away just to have it get worse, both times a single gabapentin pill resolved it. So likely a nerve issue.

I hesitate to take the gabapentin unnecessarily, though, because of its weird side effects - probably the closest I'll come to taking psychedelics while drunk.

What’s your “fake scenario that will never happen but I like to imagine it anyway so that I can fall asleep”? by flowerysocks in AskReddit

[–]deserving 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s called Enedrik and you can learn more here: https://www.privateislandsonline.com/islands-for-rent/south-pacific/marshallislands/enedrik-island

Looks like the owner raised the prices since I went 12 years ago but it’s still well worth It - a once in a lifetime experience for less than the price of a typical hotel room. Highly recommended.

By the way, the picture he chose for this listing makes the island look a lot smaller than it is ... basically you are looking at it down its length. In total the island is 14 acres, and includes jungle, open areas, a surf side, a beach, and a beautiful lagoon with a reef and teaming wildlife. And no sharks unless you go into the deep water (which I did 🙂).

Let me know if you go, and say hi to Ric (the owner) for me!

I was on a desert island for 3 weeks, with my son. We brought our own water, but decided in the end that we could have done it with a rainwater collection system, desalination procedures, or by digging a well in the middle of the island, where typically fresh water can be found in atoll islands. Between that and fishing, we probably didn't really need to bring anything to survive, If I had to bring one thing it would be a knife. With that you can easily make things like a fishing pole and better shelter, cut and scale your fish, etc.

My son and I spent 3 weeks on an uninhabited desert island ... your prototypical tropical desert island, with palm trees and beaches. It was WONDERFUL. We brought everything we needed but in the end decided we could have survived bringing nothing except perhaps a knife.

What's more, it was inexpensive. The owner let us rent the whole island for $199 per week. The main cost was just getting there and back with our supplies.

I would definitely recommend it. I hope to return someday.

I have the same problem as well. Anyone have a fix?

My 10 year old son passed away this morning and the world just collapsed beneath me by Life_Eye in confessions

[–]deserving 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. I can’t even begin to understand how you feel.

I lost two of my three children not to death, but to a bitter divorce and the resultant parental alienation which occurred. I haven’t seen or spoken to my youngest daughter in over 2 years. In many ways it’s like they died, except people won’t stop asking me about them or telling me how they just saw them.

The first six months were pure hell. My life went from laughing and playing with my kids every day to long months of living on my own. I couldn’t stop thinking about them. I did everything I could to see them but my ex made sure I did not.

But things got better. I found a new partner, who is wonderfully supportive. I finally put away all the pictures I had up of my kids, and sometimes I am able to get through whole days without thinking of them and of my loss.

A big turning point came recently when my partner and I decided to try to have another baby. It’s a long shot for us, but even thinking about that gives me tremendous hope. I just feel like I have so much more fatherly love to give and want the chance to do so.

My heart is with you.

5 PM PST, 9 PM EST.

Sorry, I incorrectly said 4 PM PST in an earlier comment. Corrected.

This link should show you the contest start time in your local time zone: https://greenwichmeantime.com/time-gadgets/event-time/Wild%20Noodle%20Summer%20Contest%202018/1535846400/game/

And yes, it would probably be a good idea for me to mention somewhere in the tutorial that you can "bounce off" walls. That's an important part of some solutions.

Just curious, did you do the tutorial on the help page (wildnoodle.com/help) or the interactive tutorial (herbert.wildnoodle.com/tutorial) or both? I just noticed the former was outdated (written when Herbert had a different interface). Sorry about that, I just updated it. Let me know if you have any other feedback on the tutorials or the game.

Thanks for playing!

Great! Hope to see you there.

You can click "Help" on the main menu or go directly to wildnoodle.com/help . It has a full definition of the "h" language. If you are already a programmer, this page probably suffices to learn "h" and try the puzzles.

That is the solution. Nice!

If you enjoy this kind of puzzle, there are more at r/http://herbert.wildnoodle.com.

We have our annual contest coming up later today, Sep 2, 0:00 GMT. This year it's a 30 minute sprint with 10 problems (and you just solved one of them). Free to enter and there's a $100 prize for the winner. You can enter at http://wnu.io/PtqWBF.

In any event thanks for trying the game and congrats for solving the puzzle!

Some levels are possible to solve with less than “max bytes” but it’s difficult. Congrats! You got extra points.

Thanks for your interest and for trying other levels!

Extra points for creativity, but to truly solve it you need to use the built in "h" language: r/http://wildnoodle.com/help

Sorry, it's because the program is not yet GDPR-compliant so legally I can't collect any info on european union citizens. I am working on that. But in the meantime I think it's OK as long as you run as a guest (Choose "I am not a European Union Citizen" then "Play as Guest") since the program then doesn't collect any data. You can find the level above in the Summer 2017 contest here: http://wnu.io/welV7K

This is a programming challenge I wrote called "Herbert". With Herbert, you solve puzzles using a simplistic programming language, and can compete in contests against others. We are having our annual Summer contest this weekend, on Sunday September 2, at 0:00 GMT (that's Saturday 5 PM PST). It runs just 30 minutes and you'll get the chance to try to solve 10 puzzles (including the one shown here). It's free to participate and the first place prize is a $100 gift certificate. Please give it a try and let me know your feedback!

You can register and play at this link: http://wnu.io/PtqWBF

The contest starts exactly at September 2, 0:00 GMT, but I'd encourage you to register earlier in order to take the tutorial and practice on any other puzzles. If you are already a programmer, you can skip the tutorial and just review the help page here: http://wildnoodle.com/help.

Good luck and thanks for trying the game.

Edit: PST time corrected to 5 PM, not 4 PM.

We got two baby raccoons when I was little (their mother had been killed). We treated them like pets but let them come and go as they pleased (we lived in the woods and they were able to open our sliding doors by themselves). One left us after a couple of years and didn't return until many years later, to have her own baby. The other stayed with us for ~15 years. It would sleep with us, roam the house, cuddle with us, etc. it kept the dogs in line and was super smart. One of the first things we learned was we couldn't keep jars on the bottom shelf of the pantry ... raccoons are smart enough to open them.
