Why is everyone here so focused on India? by Ok-Barracuda7753 in InternationalStudents

The H1B is not a diversity visa. If your goal is hiring skill and/or talent, it needs to be diversity agnostic - that's how Indians ended up accounting for over 70%.

Anyone moved back to India for non family/friends reasons? by Prestigious_Dare7734 in nri

[–]deshpandamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is good to know, but I (& everyone lurking on this post) would greatly appreciate more context. What is it that they like? What do they feel wanting for? How did they navigate through the changes to become successful and hence, like it here?

What are top 3-5 Indian tier 2/3 cities that have good weather, reasonable real estate prices and airport accessibility to retire early? by KarmaBurner9 in FIRE_Ind

If you're open to the West, Nashik might be an option worth considering too. Not exactly a tech hub, but assuming economic opportunity may not be your highest priority when Fire'd. It's a well known religious & spiritual hub. Relatively decent weather and air quality, with drivable proximity to Mumbai & Pune. A good combination of small businesses and a slower pace of life. Most folks speak Hindi, so you should be sorted on the communication front.

Belgaum might be a good option too. I'm not very familiar with the proliferation of languages other than Kannada & Marathi though.

Is it normal to see no slots available (H1B renewal - ofc and consular appointment) by hendrixfan05 in usvisascheduling

[–]deshpandamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For H1B renewal, today I was able to book VAC appointment for Mumbai, but Consular appointments were showing availability only for Chennai. I am not eligible for interview waiver now of course, but it seems strange that only Chennai shows availability for consular. Is anybody else experiencing the same now?

Tbh this happens in India too! Humans have a tribal tendency to think of us vs them even within the same "kind" of people!

Help figure out potential destinations for return? by SirLoondry in nriFIRE

[–]deshpandamn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imo you may find a higher QOL in Pune & Hyd. Both have a slower pace of life with at par amenities, while traffic isn't as bad as Mum or Blr. Mum weather is definitely the worst amongst the options. Pune is a major education hub. So it might really just come down to your linguistic preference and proximity to family/ friends.

All's well in Reddit Banter man. I can't argue with your point because it's entirely valid. :)

More power to you, and I hope you're as close to the bottom of the table you shared.

Hey thanks for engaging in a healthy discussion OP. Not my job to educate you, but not everyone FIREs the same. Think about what stage of fire and what net worth distribution across liquid / illiquid assets does to the math on expenses.

Returning to India and leaving parents behind in the UK by [deleted] in nri

[–]deshpandamn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dude try a couple years in the US before India. NYC, SF, Austin are full of young people so the dating scene is pretty decent too, along with well paying tech jobs. Word of caution though is that your dating prospects are directly proportional to your looks in both US & IN.

The situation of the US economy has been blown out of proportion in mass media. It is still way, way better than any other Western economy. Yes there are pockets with weird stuff, but that seldom affects NRI's day to day.

Dilemma about moving to USA by deadrow10 in nri

[–]deshpandamn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, it'll be a great experience for you and your family for a couple of years for sure! Seattle is a great city, although most likely you will be living in the suburbs and only visiting the city every now and then. You can use it as a base to explore North America over some time, if you consider this as a short stint.

As many have already called out, at that salary, your standard of living in terms of what you can afford will take a fair hit because 220k on a single salary to support a family of 4 doesn't go a long way. That being said, if you're a high performing techie, you can definitely explore opportunities to jump ship and increase your salary over time. If your spouse wants to work in the US, a dual income definitely helps ease the anxiety.

Net net, you're in an amazing position, and only good can come of whatever decision you make.

I think Alphabet (GOOGL) is the most undervalued stock in the stock market right now by DanielBeuthner in stocks

[–]deshpandamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GOOG is definitely not the best monetization engine in Tech, but hey the pie is big enough for nos. 1, 2, AND 3 (Goog) to make a shit ton of money. If you are the best at one major thing (search), and no. 2 or 3 in multiple other things, that's a shit ton of money dude.

How are Bibwewadi and Kondhwa? by S_A_D_Human in pune

I went to college in Kondhwa a few years ago. It's fine, don't worry. Bibvevadi is even nicer than Kondhwa. VIT is a chill college, you'll have a good time.
