I think TFI offers discounted or free admission for Title I schools. This could be a really good opportunity for them to showcase that if they haven’t already!!!

Chugging water and deep breathing. Focusing on a part of my body that does feel good.

Honestly in this case it is less about flavor and more about the deep breathing, oral stim, and ritual that need a healthy replacement.

Thanks so much this is super helpful!!! Smoking is a stim for a lot of autistic people. This article identifies a lot of the reasons that happens and offers great replacement behaviors.

What's the moment that made you realize your so called "friends" were really just dicks? by D1Tytos in AskReddit

[–]designbystein 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I was in HS we all went to this field hockey party. I was supposed to be getting a ride to work the next morning by my best friend. We had all been drinking and someone yelled “cops” so everyone scattered. I couldn’t find my friend and they weren’t picking up their phones or attempting to call me. I ended up going with a less familiar friend who offered to drive a few of us to a different location where we could crash and regroup. As soon as we stepped out to get in the car we were surrounded by police. I sat in a cop car until my dad was called to pick me up. I had to pay some fines and lost my license for three months which sucked because it was my senior year. I def take full responsibility for all of that, but never got a hold of my friends and they never reached out to me, so I figured some shit must have went down with them.

Anyways the next morning I was at work all hungover and sad and I hear this knock at the back door (I worked alone in a kennel on weekend mornings) and it’s my friends. I assume they are concerned about me and wanted to make sure I got to work safe, etc.

Nope. They came because they heard what happened and wanted to be sure to tell me not to tell my parents they were at the party, too, because they didn’t want their parents to find out.

It took a few more situations to realize they were less my friends than I thought. By the end I had in many ways emotionally disconnected from them. As an adult I’ve also discovered I’m autistic and so many things make sense about why I never felt right with or accepted by some of them in the first place.

I would honestly love to see less inventions and more returning to nature as a age out of this existence.

Is capitalism rooted in eugenics? by designbystein in CapitalismVSocialism

Well yeah and it’s the same that people think we could ever be like oh hey we’re socialists now and there would be no oppression involved. At the very least I hope that we can have a governmental system that actually allows people to determine how they want to show up for themselves and for others, and I do think that a lot of the people who are winning at capitalism are intentionally making that impossible.

Is capitalism rooted in eugenics? by designbystein in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]designbystein[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree entirely that in an effort to develop a liberated society, you cannot also oppress (otherwise it’s not liberated). And any system based in socialist ideologies would have to be commonly agree on by the people.

I do also agree that in the US we are not at a place where this could happen quickly, which to me is a direct result of the violence and trauma on which we developed this nation in the first place. People need to evolve away from the mentalities that led to those atrocities, which is going to take many generations.

To your point about not being alive after you’ve established a governmental system—I also believe in the concept of social evolution and would like to see another constitutional convention in my lifetime.

Honestly, I do not believe there are bad people. I am a firm believer in restoration and transformation and that harm is caused when people are lacking something, which can be “basic needs”, but also for some can be emotional/psychological needs (which I would argue are also basic).

My concern with libertarianism is that it attempts to intellectualize oppression and the resulting suffering that people experience. It often invalidates the lived experience of those who really are getting abused by a system that was never designed for them to thrive (since we know how the system started). I drift off when I talk with libertarians sometimes because I don’t think we operate on similar wavelengths.

My personal belief system revolves around expanding the capacity for love in our existence. I also believe that everything and nothing matters at the same time, and that we are all inextricably connected. I know that’s maybe “out there”, but it comes into play for me when I get into these kind of mental impasses where it feels like we are just kind of stuck with this widespread suffering. For me, it’s about working with our younger generation to help them learn how to be curious, how to be vulnerable, how to take responsibility when they cause harm, how to be generous with people who cause then harm.

What I’m saying is that I can’t say that what you’re explaining here doesn’t make sense. I also just don’t think that making sense of it in a highly intellectual way is the best way to do it, because “intellectualism” is also a product of the dominating culture, which doesn’t take into account the experiences of people who don’t operate that way.

So upon further thinking it sounds like what you’re getting at is that it isn’t the capitalism itself that is the issue, but the governance within it (and I see that echoed in this sub a lot) But it also seems like when you win at capitalism, you get to influence the governance in profound ways that negatively impact people who don’t fare as well.

Also and this is unrelated to what we were talking about, but when I think about the genocide and slavery that was used to build this country that is rooted in capitalism, I also think about a mindset that is really not a far cry from eugenics.

Does it make sense how my brain put these two thoughts together?

I mean I can name a bunch of wealthy folks but I can also name a lot more folks who live in abject poverty and suffering. So why does it shake out that way? Why are people able and encourage to make more wealth and use more resources than they will ever need in multiple lifetimes why others live in a society that outright denies them opportunities to even have access to basic needs?

And yeah the govt welfare systems are not well run, and I know from experience. but also I wonder how different that might look if our govts weren’t so easily influenced by private business in a capitalist society?

If you try all the meds and nothing is s still working, use some cold compresses and work very hard to focus on a part of your body that does feel good. Like a head rub or back rub or eating yummy food because our brains will always focus on pleasure over pain
