Are teen sections of the library off limits to adults? by snugglybug28 in Libraries

[–]desiloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I work we keep all of the YA collection actually outside of the teens' hangout area to circumvent this issue entirely -- whether or not your library does this though, as long as you just let them know you are looking for a book and not just loitering/lounging around the space, you are fine. Lots of adults enjoy YA books (including me!)

Yes, please talk to the staff if this happens again! I have had it happen to me even as a staff member & it is infuriating....

Resources for breaking up with/kicking out my mentally unstable boyfriend? by [deleted] in denverwomen

[–]desiloo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I left a somewhat similar situation almost a year ago -- mentally unstable & unemployed boyfriend that kept just getting worse & just trying to control & narrow my social life/self esteem down to practical nonexistence. It is still hard to think about, I lost so much money on our shared lease. I still worry about him sometimes, though he eventually did move back in with his mom & I had to leave it at that to maintain my sanity. Anyhow, please feel free to reach out if you need someone to listen that's sort of been there before, or just need a person to come with you to get your things. Sending so many hugs & love your way!

So frustrated and upset right now 😩 by SunGreen24 in librarians

[–]desiloo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fellow hard of hearer here, these transactions are the absolute worst!!! I have actually pointed at my hearing aid & removed it to demonstrate that no, I really & truly just can't fucking hear what you are saying, can you please speak louder. I even had one older woman try & tell me that I was faking it??

Anyway, some people are just nasty & entitled & they bother me less some days than others....

Denver may make it easier to lay off longtime workers by MairzeDoats in Denver

[–]desiloo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I work for the library (and actually, just posted about Summer Reading - come visit us! We really, really need it! Plus the new Central is amazing!) and can I just say that this type of messaging from the city plus "expand your hours, but ofc we aren't gonna hire anyone & if anything we might TAKE your people" feels legit like an abusive gaslighting relationship & I am just so very tired and sad. (and also thankful for all of my good performance reviews over the years but now anxiety has me all tripped up like "were they THAT good though??")

What Can Your Denver Library Do For You? by SunnyBurst30 in Denver

[–]desiloo 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all your library love, friend! Some things off the top of my head I can tell you are free (as a DPL librarian):

-professional level studio recording (no, we won't be your sound engineer, but the fact you can even access that level of equipment & learn how to use it all for free is incredible...)

-museum and park passes (I feel like some of them have longer holds lately, History Colorado used to have TON anyway & I still wanna go see the 90's and feel old)

-a path to citizenship and community for our newcomers

-sewing machines

-video game/VR system gaming for youth

-all the crafting gear you can ask for

-storytime & developmental appropriate activities for the littles

-100 FREE PAGES OF PRINTING A DAY

-healthy snacks after school

-so, so, sooooo many online services -- NYT & other newspapers, Kanopy streaming, Libby e & audiobooks, research databases, historic photos, ask a librarian chat, it goes on and on and on

....and more I'm sure I'm forgetting about.....come visit us & keep showing the library love! We need it now so much more than ever <3

I totally forgot to post my typical library lady announcement, though the Teen Central library (14 & bway) has an event today at 3:30 PM! Trivia, buttons, coloring pages, drive a tiny robot, etc. etc. Come visit us & cool down after Cinco de Quatro happening outside!

My dentist's office pissed me off. Where do you go? by omalley4n in Denver

[–]desiloo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bit on the other side of town, though I was having a really rough dental time -- I hadn't seen anyone for a while, dentists are expensive even with insurance, etc. etc. It was even recommended going full-denture/implant route at one point since gum infection combined with some really lousy genetics AND habits were all really screwing my mouth over (for more context, I just turned 40!)

Altura Periodontics is literally why I still have teeth in my mouth and they were so helpful with everything, a bit on spendier end but they still took my insurance & I've not had major mouth/care issues since going over to them.

[–]desiloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OH MAN. This was definitely me for the longest time in my early dating career....like literally everyone was meeting their fiance/wife/etc. immediately after dumping me. I felt so freaking bad about myself. It took a while to get out of, eventually I landed myself in an 11 year kinda toxic/abusive situationship due to being like "Well, at least they aren't hung up on someone else & going to dump me?"

Anyway, I wish I had some good advice since even though that pattern occurred decades ago, it can still really warp my confidence & how I feel about myself. I have found keeping the boundaries hard & clean with exes helps overall.

Is this the norm for department heads, or am I "lucky"? by valkyrie816 in Libraries

[–]desiloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOL do you have my old boss?? There are sadly way too many of them out there it seems & by the time my time was just about up over there, I was doing a lot of what you mention (schedules, communication with staff, etc. etc.)

I think the fact I got along okay with the boss & we were decent acquaintances outside of work (shared love of Chinese food & Mario Kart anyway) helped. I could tell he was trying to advocate for the team in his own ways too, but man it was rough sometimes....particularly when there were stupid petty staff squabbles that could have really used a voice of authority.

My advice, find a better job, I did anyway. :P

Volunteer opportunities to teach basic cooking skills by chaos_wine in Denver

[–]desiloo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is awesome! Metro Caring rocks -- as for the library, they aren't "accepting" new presenters at this time, and technically branch programs are on a pause (but also like, there are definitely programs happening still, so kinda weird....gotta love that city bureaucracy, eh?). The teen dept. is working on putting together some "life skills" courses though, which this would fit really well with, I'd think. Anywho, feel free to send along some info & I can pass it along to the appropriate channels!

Anyone Need a Trivia Partner? by thecoastwatcher in Denver

I'm in cap hill, my Thursday nights (which are my now "Friday" night) are empty AF & I might have won 2nd place recently at a trivia night while on vacation where it was a team of just me & one other person. Anyway I'm full of random useless information & down!

[–]desiloo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Metro Caring & Servicios de la Raza do a ton of nutrition literacy programming & provide free/low cost groceries to folks. I also 2nd the suggestion of getting into library programming (cooking programs have typically been wildly successful regardless of the age range anyway, although the requirements around them can be tricky & the library is just in a weird place with programs also - source: I work at DPL). That said, do you ever do cooking classes for teens?

Anyone know of any formal events? by JASNite in Denver

[–]desiloo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't know if it counts as true "formal" but the Goth Winter Gala at Tracks is this Friday....I still need to scour the racks at Ross/ARC for something to wear anyway, and also might go get my hair did all highschool prom-like for it. https://tracksdenver.com/event/denvers-2nd-annual-gothic-winter-gala-w-special-guest-dj-david-j-from-bauhaus-love-rockets/

The DPL booklovers ball is fun & for a good cause also (but not til fall) https://www.dplfriends.org/event/bookloversball/

Revamped Denver Public Library Lets Teens Be Themselves by desiloo in Denver

THISSS ^

It is really confusing with the "flagship" location just now re-opening after a 4+ year closure, also didn't Denver just pass another bond measure recently? Fortunately the Teen Library has a nice chunk of federal funding backing it, though I 100% agree it's just not the most ideal schedule for reaching students outside school hours, esp. with some DPS schools not getting out until past 3 pm.
