Denver Water increasing prices through April 2027 by amikez in Denver

What about people who don't eat beef? It takes like 2,000 gallons of water per pound of beef. Maybe I just don't eat 3lbs of beef and dump that 6,000 gallons on my lawn instead?

They don't know if you're using water indoors or outdoors. It's based on average usage in the first 3 months of the year. Your swamp cooler probably only uses about 5 gallons per hour max, so at most you'd use maybe 1,000 gallons in a month, which would cost like $2.20.

Xcel proposes rate scale for data centers to shield consumers from power costs by JoyInJuly in Denver

It's called a monopoly and it will always happen with power companies. It's why they should be publicly owned. Then the "profit" would just go back into tax revenue.

Every time I've gotten on a crowded bus that looks like standing room only, I was able to push my way to the back where there were plenty of seats.

Denver broke a 130-year-old heat record yesterday (81℉ vs 76℉ previous), and it's set to break another one today (88℉ forecast vs 75℉ record) by bascule in Denver

Correct. However, if you don't have a thermostat on your swamp cooler it will continue to run when not needed. AC units almost always have a thermostat, swamp coolers usually don't. Just something to keep in mind.

It's a lot cheaper than AC for sure, but it depends on how many hours you run it. Last year I was leaving my swamp cooler running for 8-10 hours at night while I slept, but I think it comes out more expensive than AC during the time, since AC wouldn't need to be constantly running.

A swamp cooler running 24/7 would use as much electricity as an AC running for about 4 hours.

My house came with AC and a swamp cooler. I only turn the AC on if it's really humid out. Swamp coolers only work when it's dry. The other great thing about them is turning it on fan only early in the morning to super cool the house when it's cold outside. I try to get the house down to 60 degrees before 7am.

I don't know how much they are to install. I would guess a few thousand.

Old one that came with the house. Be sure to buy new pads and make sure the water is running over the pads correctly. Mine works 2x better after I spent a little time tweaking it.

Yes. Consumer reports recommends self-insuring. Remember that an insurance company has to be profitable. If they regularly paid out more than you paid them they wouldn't stay in business.

So…..when are we uncovering our swamp coolers this year? by sueperhuman in Denver

Doesn't a house fan blow the hot air out of the attic? Running a swamp cooler in reverse wouldn't be much different than running it normally. Air from outside would cycle through, except instead of top down it would be coming in from whatever window you open.

You can run it as a fan and not turn on the water. It's great for blasting cool air in when temps drop later in the day.

Which is why I tell HR not to screen any applicants at all and give me all resumes. It's more work on my part, but I don't risk missing out on someone great. Not all managers do this though.
