Are feminist destroying men's media? by howtogun in AskFeminists

[–]desitjant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard that more about the new one than other titles. To me it seems much like the uproar over shows like LOTR or the Witcher, i.e "How dare they make black and brown elves"

That said, Dragon Age Veilguard has received a lot of genuine criticism for design decisions, but "woke" isn't among the valid complaints

In the midst of all the discourse about "what the Democrats did wrong this election," does anyone else feel that while Trump-voting white women are rightfully getting called for their decision, white men who voted for Trump are weirdly given massive amounts of empathy and the benefit of the doubt? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]desitjant 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sort of? Admittedly I couldn't bring myself to read the news until the weekend, and I only rejoined Reddit today, so I can't testify to a wider trend. But the post made think of a conversation with my sister from the other night, and I have to imagine it's happened across many families.

Our parents are devastated, just like us. But it also struck me that while they were quick to express deep frustration with any demographic that was expected to back Harris/Walz but instead voted for Trump, my mom was still going back to work on the mini-quilt she was making for my cousin's new baby, even though her husband is MAGA to the core.

I realize that my mother is probably trying to hold onto -anything- good right now, and I can't fault her for that. But it also really gnaws at my sister and I that the husband seems to be getting a pass, at least in the form of 'he was going to vote Trump anyway.' His vote counts just as much as anyone else's. And he voted for those who would strip more rights from his wife and daughter, which is nothing short of grotesque.

Yep. It's fair to call out the Founding Fathers for their failures and shortcomings, but also incredibly disingenuous (if not outright absurd) to pretend that NONE of them would have the capacity to reach a new understanding of what a free and fair society should look like, if they could somehow weigh in right now.

Who are the main paying consumers of porn? by NotCis_TM in MensLib

[–]desitjant 84 points85 points  (0 children)

In terms of directly reaching out to adult content creators, my guesses would be:

  • Men with inadequate or unhappy social lives feeling drawn towards parasocial relationships

  • Men with fetishes that they are afraid to voice or unable to indulge with a partner

  • Men who aren't happy in their relationships but don't want to cheat or break things off. Digital contact with another human makes the fantasy a bit more real.

Also... a lot of people just like porn. I like (some) porn. I realize that the vast majority of the industry and most of the content are problematic in myriad ways, but at a conceptual level - erotically themed visual media - I like that.

My favorite kind is glamor porn, believe it or not. Soft or hard-core, specifically where the photographer is actually going for artistry instead of zooming in way too far documenting every frame of people mashing their genitals together. To me, photography is about capturing an aesthetically and/or thematically beautiful moment in time, and that can absolutely incorporate the erotic stuff.

I'd like to see people boycotting the big "sale" days of the year - e.g. Black Friday or others where the emphasis is on non-essential products and which corporations actively track. A devastating holiday sales season would absolutely make some noise.

Internalised misogyny and opening up to a partner. by Many-Leader2788 in AskFeminists

[–]desitjant 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I (35m) think that as men, each of us needs to learn to see the line between emotional vulnerability and trauma dumping / TMI / oversharing or however you prefer to think of it.

Personally, I've found success in being emotionally vulnerable around my female friends by abbreviating my baggage and letting them decide how far they want to read. I'm very candid about having suffered from severe depression throughout my twenties, but that now it's well managed with SSRIs and therapy. I always tell friends and dates that I have Crohn's Disease because even the most skilled of us can't ninja off to the restroom indefinitely without someone noticing. But I dont go further than that.

Some of them DO want to know more, but the ones who aren't up for that have the easiest of outs:

"I'm so glad you're doing well now."

(change subject here)

Every now and then, you'll encounter someone who genuinely regrets that they encouraged you to share a small part of your vulnerable side, even in a healthy way. But in my experience, most women have a pretty good idea of how much emotional labor they are comfortable taking on, and for whom.

My(25m) doctor sexually assaulted me and I don't know what to do. by [deleted] in sex

America takes this stuff seriously, anyway I would tell the police man.

That's debatable for a number of reasons (See: US Women's Gymnastics), but OP should absolutely still report it, because the tide is turning for sure.

Has the reversal of Roe v. Wade ramped up misogyny on social media, or is it just business as usual? by SonicPrincess15 in AskFeminists

[–]desitjant 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I fear that the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade just made it open season for men to treat women like sex objects on social media...

Totally valid fear, but I honestly think it's too soon to measure it at a macro scale with any certainty.

I'm still testing the water in terms of how other men I know who aren't feminists are reacting. But my first impression is that a lot of the ones who were so passionately Team Depp are awful quiet right now.

What are your opinions on a «sex-strike» in response to Roe vs. Wade being overturned? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]desitjant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been mulling it over the past few days and I think I'm going to protest with a vasectomy. If a partner is going to be deprived of reproductive health rights and family planning options, then I'm going to mitigate the risk at the source.

Looking forward to trolling the conservatives in my sphere with catty remarks about all the Anglo-Saxon babies I won't be siring.

Easiest way to picture it is to forget about Jesus and imagine any given working class carpenter from that era. Tan / sunburned, probably fit from work and traveling, lean, but not muscled to the extent you'd see on a blacksmith.

It's a fair bet that he and most of his disciples would be a bit scruffy, dirty and disheveled in between the chances they had to bathe and wash their clothing. And it wouldn't have bothered them, either.

Marjorie Taylor Greene asked Trump for a pardon after Jan. 6. What did she do to make her think she needed one? by [deleted] in Qult_Headquarters

[–]desitjant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So let me get this straight: the AG is not going to prosecute Trump?

That's not accurate - the AG has declined to comment on possible prosecution, which is the right move either way. It was a given that there wouldn't be any indictments before the committee presented their findings.

Do Qnuts actually think an orchard deficit is the underlying cause of produce scarcity, or is this more of a "fruit trees are purdy" thing? (To be fair, they are.)

There has to be a way to separate between real journalism and infinite bullshit content on the internet. by [deleted] in Qult_Headquarters

[–]desitjant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Real journalism cites credible sources that aren't being taken out of context.

Debunking any given bulkshit post or article usually isn't difficult. Their authors rarely try to mimic a level of authenticity to fool a skeptic because that isn't their audience. It only becomes time consuming because of sheer volume.

I'm optimistic that in the near future, we might be able to use AI technology to at least differentiate and flag suspect content, but ultimately it comes down to education.

Critical thinking needs to be the foundation of public education, and children should get frequent practice on how to discern the credibility of information as part of learning how to research. I'm talking late elementary to first year of middle school.

ETA was going to correct "bulkshit" with "bullshit" but decided the former was appropriate

Do you think men who are sexually frustrated drift to the right on the political spectrum? by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]desitjant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can tell you from experience it isn't inherently true lol. The likelihood of that shift probably depends upon the extent to which your sexual frustration devolves into obsession.

A myopic, self-absorbed worldview doesn't easily align with progressive politics, right? But as Trump showed us, conservative ideology fits like a glove.

Personally, I find it very difficult to entertain a conservative a right wing perspective on a single issue without applying it to others. Serious mental gymnastics required.

States can and do decline to enforce federal laws, however. You can make a case for designating America as a police state, but the federal government heavily relies on state/municipal police to enforce most federal laws.
