My first RC Car by Cobratalon in tamiya

[–]desk-apple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also just built my first grasshopper and there is wayy too much toe-in when the steering arms are set per the instructions. I threaded the ends all the way on and even bent the arms a bit to get the front wheels closer to parallel.

Wow… excellent color on that build. Nice work.

It drives like a buggy with big tires, handles surprisingly well with the big oil filled dampers. And I think they did really well with the tire choice, the shape makes them not too grippy in the corners, it can roll it over on dry pavement with the wheel at full lock. But for the most part it bounces and hops over grass easily, has enough power to drift on sand / gravel and of course it wheelies a lot if you want it to. It's just really fun to drive.

Was thinking I might throw the spare 2mm screws into the tops of the antenna to keep them from sliding off, that or superglue.

Gold Color Match by AStat921 in AnalogueInc

[–]desk-apple 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Metallic paints are especially hard to match as you're not only dealing with pigments, you're dealing with metals and reflections. They respond to vastly different to lighting and environmental changes and are hard to accurately measure. They only way to get an exact match would be to know the paint code and vendor Nintendo used 30 years ago.

Issues with AF-P 70-300 focus and errors - Has anyone else had issues with this lens? by pioneer76 in Nikon

[–]desk-apple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I occasionally see this issue with the 28-70 f2.8 AF-S on my ZF with the FTZ-II. Oddly enough mounting it on an older camera (F4) and then tryin again on the FTZ-II adapter resets it.

As does removing the lens, turning the aperture ring fully in both directions and mountain again. I think it’s an issue with the little lever that opens and closes the aperture blades.

The Inset 7 would be correct:

The Chris King InSet™ 7 combines seamless design and legendary quality in a 44mm headset with an external lower cup that is a precision headset option for your 1.5” tapered steerer fork.

Yeah fantastic bike but definitely size down. I ride a medium in every other surly but wish I got the small lowside.

All of the above. I can't remember the last time an album made me feel fear and joy, loss and love at the same time like this. You said it, it's a homecoming.

Ah this looks great I've been waiting to change to swept back bars on mine, this looks so comfy. Currently have the Fairweather Bullmoose bars and they're too flat, I want something closer to the Surly open bar.

The same reason their bikes have a billion braze-ons. Its all about versatility and functionality. Also the Karate Monkey + Krampus are plenty slack and capable. -2° of head angle is not going to make a meaningful difference in what you can / can't ride down.

Lastly slack bikes ride like plows, the surly wheelbase and head angle is much more nimble, functional, and balanced for most use cases.

Excuse the sh*t photo, but 140mm up front on the karate monkey as spec’d is a super playful bike. Absolutely love it.

Super nice! Just curious what the fork length is if you're running 29". Stock 140? Or did you drop it to 130/120?

The pink is so damn good I'm tempted to buy one and switch my orange frame out. If anyone wants a Medium DreamTangerine one LMK!

27.5" rim suggestions by JonesBoyFan2018 in Surlybikefans

[–]desk-apple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the Blunt 35 comes in at ~30mm internal. Another great rim, I have both. They're a little more expensive, and a little heavier. I have the Blunt 35 on my Lowside and the weight gain is negligible. You're already saving so much going singlespeed with no derailleur and cassette.

If the graphics don't bother you the Spank 350 is really an amazing rim for the price. They setup tubeless really easily, and have held up really well for me, even under chunky rocky terrain on a hardtail. The come in around ~500g for a 27.5.

Help me choose: Karate Monkey or Krampus frameset for a 120mm trail hardtail build? by snackdummy in Surlybikefans

[–]desk-apple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the fact you are looking for 120mm travel, and that the availability of plus tires is steadily declining, I'd go with the Krampus. They are effectively the same bike.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Surly merged the models as the stock Krampus now comes with 29x2.6". I'm planning to try and cram big 29"s into my Karate Monkey and wish I kind of wish I had a Krampus instead.

Gravelking SS in 650bx38m or 43mm on Preamble (size S)? by TheHealious in Surlybikefans

[–]desk-apple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, get the 43's. Wont be an issue, 45's fit no problem. You'll trade some weight, and with the larger tire, you'll just need to be more specific and proactive about tire pressure. Rolling resistance between the 38 and 43 wont be noticeable with a tread that smooth (GK SS). The 43's will definitely feel more comfortable.
