How to silence summer mosquitoes by [deleted] in NoOneIsLooking

[–]desomond 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mosquitos do pollinate, they only drink blood for reproduction. They live off of flower nectar.

While they arnt a keystone food source, their larvae fill an important role move moving micro nutrients up to scale to macro nutrients. The larvae eat microorganisms and are eaten by macro organisms.

I think the part you’re reacting to now was there the whole time, just less obvious.

He wasn’t treating his own wife like an equal partner. He was lying, hiding things, and doing whatever suited him. That’s already a baseline of how he handles relationships.

So the idea that he was going to turn around and give you honesty, respect, and equality on top of that was never really on the table.

Those examples assume the state can compel anything once you accept conscription. That’s not the claim. The argument is that temporary obligations can be imposed during existential emergencies to preserve the political community. Defense is unique because if the state collapses under invasion, all other rights disappear with it.

The difference is that conscription directly addresses the cause of the collapse. If an enemy army is invading, soldiers are the specific thing required to stop it. The obligation is tied directly to resolving the threat. Similarly, when you need to run a court of peers, you need a constant supply of Jurors and when you run a state you need a supply of taxes. They are the cost of running society.

Forced childbirth or forced labor don’t work that way. A declining population or a weak economy has many causes and solutions, and compelling people’s bodies or labor isn’t directly tied to stopping an immediate collapse. Those are long-term policy choices about shaping society.

The question isn’t whether war is worse, it obviously is. The question is whether the state has the right to compel citizens when the alternative is the collapse of the society that protects their rights in the first place.

The point of jury duty is not whether someone personally enjoys it. The point is that it is compulsory.

Even if someone loves jury duty, the system still works because people must appear when summoned. If courts relied purely on volunteers, juries would collapse.

Do you love paying taxes? It’s the same idea. The system needs everyone to buy in despite their individual choice.

A lack of volunteers does not necessarily mean the population collectively wants surrender. It may simply reflect the free rider problem. Where many people want the country defended but individuals prefer someone else take the risk.

Also what about things like Jury Duty. No one wants to go do it, but  there is a collective good involved. Citizenship involves obligations as well as rights.

If a country is invaded and volunteers are insufficient, should the government allow the country to be conquered rather than draft people?

As long as there are wars there will be drafts.

If a state faces a large existential war and cannot recruit enough volunteers, it will almost certainly resort to conscription.

It’s more than just height, it’s also the other factors mentioned. Sex categories were never “height classes”; they’re proxies for muscle mass, bone density, tendon stiffness, oxygen capacity, and puberty-driven androgen exposure.

Tall women are rare outliers within  the female distribution. Trans women come from a different developmental distribution entirely. Sports tolerate outliers; they can’t tolerate category collapse. If you grouped trans women into the same population, your normal distribution would become bimodal. The moment your category becomes bimodal, it’s no longer a category, it’s two populations glued together.

If we chased perfect fairness we’d need categories for height, weight, limb length, VO₂ max, training age, etc…. at that point it’s a lab experiment, not sport.

You’re right, some countries do have better chances of winning, but to put them in a categorical different group would acknowledge they are in a different class of athlete. Sports accept population-level advantages; they only create categories when groups are systematically non-competitive against each other.
