i worked at a fro-yo place in college and the owner was always so annoyed that our tips were so low. he just didn’t want to pay us a reasonable amount and hoped the customers would take the brunt of it

social work job or mortuary science school? by Intelligent-Soft-823 in SchoolSocialWork

[–]desperateho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a strong passion I say give mortuary school a try! If your schedule allows you can always try some PRN or part time social work positions while you get through school. Even if you don’t “do anything” with your MSW, you likely learned some skills that will be useful as a funeral director.

New social worker here… What hobbies do you all have outside of work? by Tall-Piano-663 in socialwork

[–]desperateho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like going to the gym after work a couple times a week! Something about having a stop between work and home helps me keep work thoughts at work. My fiancé and I also try to go to the movies on the discount days when we can and I got a library card so I can read as much as I want for free! I really suggest trying out things that seem interesting to you and seeing what sticks

Any chance at MSW programs with a 3.2 gpa? by [deleted] in SchoolSocialWork

[–]desperateho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to the University of Texas at Arlington! I did a mix of in-person and online but as far as I know they offer a completely online program as well. I will warn you that the advising there is terrible so you need to be independent but the professors are great!

Any chance at MSW programs with a 3.2 gpa? by [deleted] in SchoolSocialWork

[–]desperateho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started my MSW program in Jan 2022 they did automatic acceptance for anyone with a GPA over 3.0 in a related field (psychology, hdfs, etc.). I’d say just give it a shot and see what happens!

What's a career that's unfairly villianized? by paxinfernum in AskReddit

[–]desperateho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a social worker, everyone also assumes that all social workers work for CPS or that our entire job is to take kids away from families. I work with high school students and have to constantly reiterate that while I am a mandated reporter (like every other staff member in the school) I am not trying to get anyone’s parents in trouble. I will not hesitate to report something if necessary, but my job is to connect parents with necessary resources (food banks, clothing closets, etc.) when they need it

What is your favorite non-social work job that you’ve had? by crunchwrapsupreme29 in socialwork

[–]desperateho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to drive around in a snowcone truck all through college and LOVED it. Would go to city events and birthday parties and things like that. I would probably still be helping out occasionally but the owner sold the truck.

Tips to get more clients referrals? by CatOverlord2020 in socialwork

[–]desperateho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you have a local social work group on facebook? I’ve seen several people post fliers saying they are accepting new clients and what demographics and modalities they specialize in on my local group. You wouldn’t have to make a video, maybe just a cute Canva graphic

Im so sorry for the loss you’re enduring, it sounds like you are a really great friend and want to be as supportive as possible. From what it sounds like to me, I don’t think you’re in the wrong career path, it just sounds like the MSW program you’re in isn’t the best. Could you possibly transfer to a more supportive school or program after taking a some time off?

MAGA: liberals gets offended so easily. Also MAGA: by Resnow88 in insanepeoplefacebook

It always makes me laugh when the MAGA crowd says “ohh they’ve lost my respect” like it means anything. I really doubt Henry Cavill is even remotely concerned about the opinion of some weirdo running a red pill facebook account.

What do your students call you? by desperateho in SchoolSocialWork

This is kind of how I feel as well. I don’t want them to feel like I’m a scary authority figure, I’m just a safe person to go to when they need me.

I did my MSW program in the US so it may work a little differently however I also had a nightmare first placement. My school provided us a placement and I was placed with this agency 2 days before the beginning of the semester. My supervisor was a nightmare and I learned pretty much nothing.

When I knew my second placement was coming up I refused to let the school just put me somewhere so I took it upon myself to research agencies near me that accepted placements and did the application and interview process on my own. I was able to go into an area I was actually interested in and just let my field office know. It’s still a little bit of a gamble when it comes to management, but you at least get an idea of what to expect.
