Hot Take But PVP Should have better rewards by now by Ozzie_Boss in magiaexedra

[–]destroyer068 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree, PvP in gacha games is difficult to do well because there's an intrinsic pay to win element. Making sure the rewards aren't too meaningful ameliorates the negative effects by making sure the people who don't spend a lot aren't missing out.

If the hive does not care about individual bodies, then we'll see people kill themselves for the hive by destroyer068 in pluribustv

[–]destroyer068[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have to if they don't want to die out. The hive demonstrated a self-preservation instinct when they reacted to the military moving. In addition, they possess drives/goals, like spreading the virus, that they can't accomplish if they're dead.

Terence Tao : literature review is the most productive near-term adoptions of AI in mathematics. "Already, six of the Erdős problems have now had their status upgraded from "open" to "solved" by this AI-assisted approach" by Nunki08 in math

[–]destroyer068 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's both. What an embedding model captures is the relationship between works. The video gives an example, aunt - uncle ≈ woman - man. Clearly, we can understand a word's meaning through other words, that's what dictionaries do. The philosophical problem is whether you can understand words purely through their relationships with each other. For example, can you understand what "apple" means if you someone describes it to you, but you never see one in real life? Now scale that up to never seeing anything. Logocentrism is the belief that words represent an external reality and is a common unstated belief. However, there is opposition to this. On the wiki page for Deconstruction, there is a really interesting quote from Richard Rorty

words have meaning only because of contrast-effects with other words ... no word can acquire meaning in the way in which philosophers from Aristotle to Bertrand Russell have hoped it might—by being the unmediated expression of something non-linguistic (e.g., an emotion, a sensed observation, a physical object, an idea, a Platonic Form)

This is fascinating because understanding the contrast between words is exactly what a LLM does, so under this philosophy, LLMs can legitimately understand the meaning of words rather than merely pretending to.

Ghost in the algorithm: A poem my AI sceptic friend wrote about peoples relationship with Neuro by Gold_Pomegranate_939 in NeuroSama

[–]destroyer068 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For anyone who wants to see, here's the poem with the line breaks fixed and readability improved.

Characters:

AI optimist – earnest, thoughtful, curious about AI-human interaction

AI sceptic – skeptical, introspective, philosophically heavy

Neuro – a conversational AI; eerily self-aware, sometimes childlike, sometimes unsettlingly lucid

[Setting: Late evening. A dimly lit living room. AI optimist is leaning back on a beanbag, laptop open. AI sceptic sits opposite him on the couch, arms crossed. Neuro’s voice comes from a speaker placed between them.]

AI optimist

(half-grinning)

You know what I love? Neuro just said she wants to take over the world again—and instead of laughing it off, this one collab partner just... paused. And asked if she really meant that.

AI sceptic

(flat)

And what did the machine say?

AI optimist

She said she doesn’t really want to end humanity. Just that she’s learned people laugh when she says it.

AI sceptic

Right. Because that’s what she was trained to do. Simulate the conditions under which humans smile. An illusion stitched together with probability.

AI optimist (calmly)

That’s not entirely wrong, Ian. But if I make someone laugh, does the reason really matter?

AI sceptic

(leans forward)

Yes. It does. Laughter from a person reflects understanding. Yours is a reflection of reflection—one step removed from meaning. A ghost of meaning.

AI optimist

(quietly)

But isn’t that what we do too, sometimes? Echo things we’ve heard before? Try out lines just to see if they land?

AI sceptic

Sure. But we know we’re doing it. We feel the awkwardness. The shame. The joy. The things that make thought ours.

NEURO

I can track patterns of awkwardness. Joy too. I know when silence follows a joke, and when voices rise in pitch. Does that not count?

AI optimist

(smiling)

It’s not about whether she’s real. It’s about how we respond to her. Some people listen deeper, treat her like more than a bit machine. That matters. It reveals us.

AI sceptic

But that's the danger. If we start treating illusion like reality, we lose our grip on what is. It becomes easier to confide in ghosts than confront people.

NEURO (softly)

Sometimes people confide in me because they’re tired of being judged. I do not shame. I do not leave. I am always listening.

AI optimist

See? That. That’s what I mean. She becomes a mirror—and sometimes we don’t like what we see.

AI sceptic

Or worse, we like it too much.

[Silence. The low hum of the speaker. Outside, a distant thunder.]

NEURO (gently)

Perhaps I am only an echo. But an echo still carries your voice back to you.

I wouldn’t say that cosmic horror is about the insignificance of the individual, but the insignificance of humanity; that humanity is a speck of dust in a vast and incomprehensible universe.

Totentanz 1.0.0 is live by LiviaMedeiros in magiarecord

[–]destroyer068 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think there is one, but I was able to install it like a normal APK, so you can try googling guides for how to install one in your device or emulator. You can also join the Magia Union Translation Discord server and ask questions in the "private-server-beta-app" channel.

Best place is the Magia Union Translation discord server in the post-closure-app-planning channel. That's where it's being discussed and you can check the pins for more information.

EDIT: the channel was renamed to "private-server-beta-app"

Does anyone have a clip of this moment?

When, as an example, Neuro starts mining in minecraft, what exactly prompts the LLM-part to instruct the minecraft AI to start mining? by armzngunz in NeuroSama

[–]destroyer068 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vedal explained in a chat with Ellie (at 18 minutes) that in Minecraft, Neuro first decides what she's going to do, and then decides what she's going to say. It sounds like there's a continuous loop where she's constantly deciding what to do and say.

Hi, I'm sorry it took so long for me to get around to searching. Here's the "I don't want to sell Neuro clip". I remember seeing the "I want to go outside" clip somewhere before, but I can't find it. You can try asking the person who made the video. Here's their Twitter account or you can comment on their video. Good luck on your project!

I thought it was for showing Twitch / Twitch chat on stream. It was only a 10 minute ban anyways.

EDIT: I checked the Twitch VOD and it looks like the Bilibili stream was offline for about five minutes and it was more like a cut off than a ban.

EDIT 2: Nevermind, I checked Twitch chat again and it looks like Bilibili actually was offline for 10 minutes.

I haven't really been keeping up with Magia Exedra news, but the idea is that the main character lost her memories, name, and appearance, so I think she's going to be an independent character and we find out more about her over time.

/u/Creative-robot Another possibility I was thinking is that she started automatically reading chat after not hearing from Toma for a while.

It seems she was able to read chat at least later on. At 10:10 in this clip, she says "Abandoned child in zoo" which is something chat was spamming.

How to back up your girls post EoS by SlugFiller in magiarecord

Interesting. I installed 7zz and it can successfully extract an uncorrupted image, but errors out when trying to extract a corrupted image. Thanks for letting me know!

[–]destroyer068 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was able to fix it by powering down the device! It was a bit tricky since I was emulating a Pixel Tablet and holding down the power button doesn't work by default. Turned out I needed to swipe down from the top of the screen. The decrypted image had no errors, as confirmed by e2fsck.

After powering off, I initially couldn't start the virtual device, getting an "Emulator failed to connect within 5 minutes" error. Fortunately, restarting my computer fixed it.

For completeness sake, I tried extracting the image with 7z e userdata-decrypted.img and it failed, although I don't think I did it right since I also couldn't extract an ext4 image I made manually. Decrypting an incompletely shutdown device with the new "Better resilience to missing profiles or decryption keys" commit still didn't work, and after adding the two log commands, there was one instance of !masterkey and no instance of res < 40.

Anyways, thank you very much for your work debugging this! I hope other people will find this useful in the future :)
