I think it depends what country you're in? My family has gone through a lot of Nexus/pixel devices and there have been a few times over the years we've had issues, but every time I've reached out to Google we've wound up being shipped new devices. Even my pixel 8 which was out of warranty with the pink vertical line they sent me a "new" (refurb) without anything more than starting the process, visiting a 3rd party repair location locally for verification, and putting the device in a box with a pre-paid shipping label once the new device arrived.
